We explore the abundance, spatial distribution, and physical properties of the OVI, OVII, and OVIII ions of oxygen in circumgalactic and intergalactic media (the CGM, IGM, and WHIM). We use the TNG100 and TNG300 large volume cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Modeling the ionization states of simulated oxygen, we find good agreement with observations of the low-redshift OVI column density distribution function (CDDF), and present its evolution for all three ions from z=0 to z=4. Producing mock quasar absorption line spectral surveys, we show that the IllustrisTNG simulations are fully consistent with constraints on the OVI content of the CGM from COS-Halos and other low redshift observations, producing columns as high as observed. We measure the total amount of mass and average column densities of each ion using hundreds of thousands of simulated galaxies spanning 10^11 < Mhalo/Msun < 10^15 corresponding to 10^9 < M*/Msun < 10^12 in stellar mass. Stacked radial profiles of OVI are computed in 3D number density and 2D projected column, decomposing into the 1-halo and 2-halo terms. Relating halo OVI to properties of the central galaxy, we find a correlation between the (g-r) color of a galaxy and the total amount of OVI in its CGM. In comparison to the COS-Halos finding, this leads to a dichotomy of columns around star-forming versus passive galaxies at fixed stellar (or halo) mass. We demonstrate that this correlation is a direct result of blackhole feedback associated with quenching and represents a causal consequence of galactic-scale baryonic feedback impacting the physical state of the circumgalactic medium.

The abundance, distribution, and physical nature of highly ionized oxygen O vi, O vii, and O viii in IllustrisTNG

We summarize and reanalyze observations bearing upon missing galactic baryons, where we propose a consistent picture for halo gas in L >~ L* galaxies. The hot X-ray emitting halos are detected to 50-70 kpc, where typically, M_hot( 50 kpc. For the Milky Way, the hot halo metallicity lies in the range 0.3-1 solar for R 10^11.3 Msun. This difference suggests that the hot halo properties are distinct for early and late type galaxies, possibly due to different evolutionary histories. For the cooler gas detected in UV absorption line studies, we argue that there are two absorption populations: extended halos; and disks extending to ~50 kpc, containing most of this gas, and with masses a few times lower than the stellar masses. Such extended disks are also seen in 21 cm HI observations and in simulations.

The Ultra-fast Outflow of the Quasar PG 1211+143 as Viewed by Time-averaged Chandra Grating Spectroscopy

The galactic gaseous halo is a gas reservoir for the interstellar medium in the galaxy disk, supplying materials for star formation. We developed a gaseous halo model connecting the galaxy disk and the gaseous halo by assuming the star formation rate on the disk is balanced by the radiative cooling rate of the gaseous halo, including stellar feedback. In addition to a single-temperature gaseous halo in collisional ionization equilibrium, we also consider the photoionization effect and a steady-state cooling model. Photoionization is important for modifying the ion distribution in low-mass galaxies and outskirts of massive galaxies due to the low densities. The multi-phase cooling model dominates the region within the cooling radius, where t_cooling=t_Hubble. Our model reproduces most of the observed high ionization state ions for a wide range of galaxy masses (i.e., OVI, OVII, NeVIII, MgX, and OVIII). We find that the OVI column density has a narrow range around ~10^14 cm^-2 for halo masses from M_star ~ 3 * 10^10 Msun to 6*10^12 Msun, which is consistent with some but not all observational studies. For galaxies with halo masses <~ 3 * 10^11 Msun, photoionization produces most of the OVI, while for more massive galaxies, the OVI is from the medium that is cooling from higher temperatures. Fitting the Galactic (Milky-Way) OVII and OVIII suggests a gaseous halo model where the metallicity is ~0.55 Zsun and the gaseous halo has a maximum temperature of ~ 1.9 * 10^6 K. This gaseous halo model does not close the census of baryonic material within R200.

The Mass and Absorption Columns of Galactic Gaseous Halos

Ionized outflows in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are thought to influence their nuclear and local galactic environment. However, the distance of the outflows with respect to the central engine is poorly constrained, which limits our understanding of their kinetic power as a cosmic feedback channel. Therefore, the impact of AGN outflows on their host galaxies is uncertain. However, when the density of the outflows is known, their distance can be immediately obtained from their modelled ionization parameter. With the new self-consistent PhotoIONization (PION) model in the SPEX code, we are able to calculate detailed level populations, including the ground and metastable levels. This enables us to determine under what physical conditions the metastable levels are significantly populated. We then identify characteristic lines from these metastable levels in the 1 -- 2000 {\AA} wavelength range. In the large density range of $n_H \in (10^6, 10^{20} m^{-3}$, the metastable levels 2s 2p $(^3P_{0-2})$ in Be-like ions can be significantly populated. For B-like ions, merely the first excited level 2s$^2$ 2p $(^2P_{3/2})$ can be used as a density probe. For C-like ions, the first two excited levels 2s$^2$ 2p$^2$ ($^3P_1$ and $^3P_2$) are better density probes than the next two excited levels 2s$^2$ 2p$^2$ ($^1S_0$ and $^1D_2$). Different ions in the same isoelectronic sequence cover not only a wide range of ionization parameter, but also a wide range of density. On the other hand, within the same isonuclear sequence, less ionized ions probe lower density and smaller ionization parameter. Finally, we re-analyzed the high-resolution grating spectra of NGC 5548 observed with Chandra in January 2002, using a set of PION components to account for the ionized outflow. We derive lower (or upper) limits of plasma density in five out of six PION components, based on the presence (or absence) of the metastable absorption lines.

Density diagnostics of ionized outflows in active galactic nuclei: X-ray and UV absorption lines from metastable levels in Be-like to C-like ions

Arcus will be proposed to the NASA Explorer program as a free-flying satellite mission that will enable high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (8-50) with unprecedented sensitivity – effective areas of >500 sq cm and spectral resolution >2500. The Arcus key science goals are (1) to determine how baryons cycle in and out of galaxies by measuring the effects of structure formation imprinted upon the hot gas that is predicted to lie in extended halos around galaxies, groups, and clusters, (2) to determine how black holes influence their surroundings by tracing the propagation of out-flowing mass, energy and momentum from the vicinity of the black hole out to large scales and (3) to understand how accretion forms and evolves stars and circumstellar disks by observing hot infalling and outflowing gas in these systems. Arcus relies upon grazing-incidence silicon pore X-ray optics with the same 12m focal length (achieved using an extendable optical bench) that will be used for the ESA Athena mission. The focused X-rays from these optics will then be diffracted by high-efficiency off-plane reflection gratings that have already been demonstrated on sub-orbital rocket flights, imaging the results with flight-proven CCD detectors and electronics. The power and telemetry requirements on the spacecraft are modest. The majority of mission operations will not be complex, as most observations will be long (~100 ksec), uninterrupted, and pre-planned, although there will be limited capabilities to observe targets of opportunity, such as tidal disruption events or supernovae with a 3-5 day turnaround. After the end of prime science, we plan to allow guest observations to maximize the science return of Arcus to the community.
