A hierarchical parallel implementation for heterogeneous computing. Application to algebra-based CFD simulations on hybrid supercomputers

When a cryogenic fluid initially at a subcritical temperature is injected into a supercritical environment, it will experience a process across a pseudo-boiling point, at which the specific heat reaches its maximum value under the corresponding pressure. Large eddy simulation (LES) is conducted to explore the effects of pseudo-vaporization phenomenon around the pseudo-critical temperature on fluid jet evolution. To highlight the pseudo-vaporization effect, a cryogenic nitrogen jet with different injection temperatures, which correspond to transcritical and supercritical conditions, respectively, is injected into a chamber with same supercritical conditions. All of the thermophysical and transport properties are determined directly from fundamental theories combined with a real fluid equation of state. Large eddy simulation of fluid injection under transcritical and supercritical conditions

The direct numerical simulation of the flow over a sphere is performed.
The computations are carried out in the sub-critical regime at Re = 3700 and Re =
10000 (based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter). A parallel unstructured
symmetry-preserving formulation is used for simulating the flow. Particular
attention is devoted to investigate the shear-layer instabilities and its influence in the vortical structures in the wake of the sphere. Main features of the flow including power spectra of a set of selected monitoring probes at different positions are
described and discussed in detail. Detailed information about turbulent statistics are
also provided.

An energy-preserving level set method for multiphase flows

To provide an effective numerical method for the large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows with shocks, a hybrid scheme is developed in a finite volume framework based on the fourth-order central scheme and the third-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. A total of six easy-to-implement and promising switch functions (SFs) are examined in the hybrid central–WENO scheme for the LES of compressible turbulent flows. Both the dissipation and dispersion of the developed hybrid central–WENO scheme are theoretically confirmed using the Fourier technique. Then, the effectiveness and accuracy of this scheme and the SFs are numerically tested by three problems: decaying compressible isotropic turbulence, inviscid, and turbulent transonic flow over a bump. The numerical results show the developed hybrid scheme, coupled with the SF based on local velocity divergence and pressure gradient, has excellent capabilities of capturing shocks and resolving turbulence.

Hybrid central–WENO scheme for the large eddy simulation of turbulent flows with shocks

In this article, the three-dimensional turbulent forced convection in a matrix of wall-bounded 8 × 8 cylindrical pins is studied. Large eddy simulations (LES) are performed for Reynolds numbers 3,000, 10,000 and 30,000. Three different subgrid-scale (SGS) models (WALE, QR, and VMS) are compared on a row-by-row study. Local values of velocity and pressure coefficient are depicted. Turbulence characteristics of the flow are well illustrated. The thermal field is analyzed and validated with the time-averaged Nusselt number at the end walls of the pin matrix. The capabilities of the methodology for predicting the turbulent flow features is also shown.
