Over centuries, structural glasses have been deemed as a strong yet inherently ‘brittle’ material due to their lack of tensile ductility. However, here we report bulk metallic glasses exhibiting both a high strength of ~2 GPa and an unprecedented tensile elongation of 2–4% at room temperature. Our experiments have demonstrated that intense structural evolution can be triggered in theses glasses by the carefully controlled surface mechanical attrition treatment, leading to the formation of gradient amorphous microstructures across the sample thickness. As a result, the engineered amorphous microstructures effectively promote multiple shear banding while delay cavitation in the bulk metallic glass, thus resulting in superior tensile ductility. The outcome of our research uncovers an unusual work-hardening mechanism in monolithic bulk metallic glasses and demonstrates a promising yet low-cost strategy suitable for producing large-sized, ultra-strong and stretchable structural glasses.

Thin-film metallic glasses for substrate fatigue-property improvements

In-situ straining experiments and residual stress evaluations by micromachining require accurate measurement of surface displacements. Such measurements can be conveniently done using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Three surface decoration techniques are presented to enhance surface deformation and residual stress measurement capabilities on micron-scale samples within a Scanning Electron Microscope—Focused Ion Beam (SEM-FIB) instrument. They involve the use of Yttria-stabilized-zirconia nano particles applied chemically, nano platinum dots applied using FIB, and Focused Electron Beam (FEB) assisted deposition. The three decoration techniques create distinctive, random surface features that can be used with Digital Image Correlation to provide full field maps of surface displacements at high magnifications. A series of experiments using a FEGSEM-FIB demonstrated the effectiveness of the three surface decoration techniques for FEGSEM imaging at magnifications from 2,000× to 60,000×. The precision of the image correlation is substantially enhanced by the surface decoration, with displacement standard deviations reduced to the 0.005–0.03 pixel range, depending on the patch size used. By means of an example application, the use of surface decoration for microscopic hole-drilling residual stress measurements within a FIB-SEM is presented. The same trends in DIC uncertainty observed in the analysis of the surface decoration patterns carried through to the example application. Guidelines are given for appropriate choice of decoration method to suit various practical applications.

Surface Decoration for Improving the Accuracy of Displacement Measurements by Digital Image Correlation in SEM

The Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are a new family of attractive materials with good glass-forming ability and excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength and good wear resistance, which make them candidates for structural and biomedical materials. Although the mechanical behavior of BMGs has been widely investigated, their deformation mechanisms are still poorly understood. In particular, their poor ductility significantly impedes their industrial application. In the present work, we show that the ductility of Zr-based BMGs with nearly zero plasticity is improved by a laser shock peening technique. Moreover, we map the distribution of laser-induced residual stresses via the micro-slot cutting method, and then predict them using a three-dimensional finite-element method coupled with a confined plasma model. Reasonable agreement is achieved between the experimental and modeling results. The analyses of serrated flows reveal plentiful and useful information of the underlying deformation process. Our work provides an easy and effective way to extend the ductility of intrinsically-brittle BMGs, opening up wider applications of these materials.

Laser Shock Peening on Zr-based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on Plasticity: Experiment and Modeling

A full-field, multi-axial computation technique is described for determining residual stresses using the hole-drilling method with DIC. The computational method takes advantage of the large quantity of data available from full-field images to ameliorate the effect of modest deformation sensitivity of DIC measurements. It also provides uniform residual stress sensitivity in all in-plane directions and accounts for artifacts that commonly occur within experimental measurements. These artifacts include image shift, stretch and shear. The calculation method uses a large fraction of the pixels available within the measured images and requires minimal human guidance in its operation. The method is demonstrated using measurements where residual stresses are made on a microscopic scale with hole drilling done using a Focused Ion Beam – Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB-SEM). This is a very challenging application because SEM images are subject to fluctuations that can introduce large artifacts when using DIC. Several series of measurements are described to illustrate the operation and effectiveness of the proposed residual stress computation technique.
