A Comprehensive survey on ear recognition: Databases, approaches, comparative analysis, and open challenges

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disorder that is seen in skin and oral mucosa. Definitive etiology for oral lichen planus remains unknown. It may or may not be associated with skin lesions. Different clinical patterns such as reticular, plaque, erosive, bullous, and atrophic are seen in oral mucosa of which bullous lichen planus is a rare entity. We present a unique case of bullous lichen planus in a 20-year-old male without skin manifestations along with the review of literature comprising various case reports of bullous lichen planus.

Most of the vascular tumors in the maxillofacial region are hemangiomas. Hemangiomas are basically benign lesions of a vascular origin. This article describes a series of five cases on hemangioma recorded on the lip, buccal mucosa, and zygoma. Here, we present four variants of hemangioma, namely cavernous hemangioma, capillary hemangioma, lobular capillary hemangioma, and intraosseous hemangioma, which were reported to our Maxillofacial Unit.

Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura also known as Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura or ITP, is an autoimmune disorder characterised by accelerated destruction and suboptimal platelet production that leads to reduced peripheral blood platelet counts. Females have a higher incidence than in Males with the ratio of 3:1. Here we present a case of 68-year-old female, with complaints of purpuric spots, ecchymosis, discolouration of tongue and history of melena. The treatment is initiated with IV dose of Corticosteroids followed by platelet infusions. Steroid dose must be tapered after one month of treatment schedule. Splenectomy is preferred in severe cases. ITP occurs because of platelet destruction abruptly by complex mechanisms in the immune system.

Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Case Report

Aim: To assess the age changes and gender differences based on anthropometric measurements of the ear and to create a database for the reported population. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted among 200 individuals who reported to private dental teaching hospital as outpatient. The study population was explained about the procedure, and informed consent was obtained. The size of the auricle was measured bilaterally. The study population was subdivided into three subgroups. Group I included individuals between 20 and 39 years, Group II between 40 and 59 years, and Group III above 60 years. Results: The total ear index among women with mean and standard deviation was 4.97 ± 0.6 cm, and men were 5.02 ± 0.4 cm. The lobe index among men with mean and standard deviation was 1.153 ± 0.0163 cm, and women were 1.243 ± 0.0147 cm with a significant P < 0.0001. Conclusion: The anthropometric measurements of ear index were higher in men than women, with no age changes after 20 years of age for both men and women. Hence, this data are considered reliable and can be used for various purpose including forensics, identification, plastic surgeries, and research.

Assessment of age changes and gender differences based on anthropometric measurements of ear: A cross-sectional study

A number of imaging techniques are useful in the assessment of the salivary glands, namely, plain film radiography, sialography, ultrasonography (USG), radionuclide imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography. One of the most common salivary gland imaging modalities is USG, which helps in obtaining information regarding salivary gland pathologies successfully with good accuracy. USG is the best at differentiating between intraand extra-glandular masses as well as between cystic and solid lesions, local nodal metastases, and local invasion in case of tumors. USG can demonstrate the presence of an abscess in an acutely inflamed gland, as well as sialoliths, which appear as echogenic densities that exhibit acoustic shadowing. In this review, authors have focused on the role of USG in imaging salivary glands in healthy and diseased states and their sonographic features.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a well-recognized potentially malignant disorder which affects epithelium of skin, oral mucosa, and genitalia. Clinically, the lesion looks like lace-like pattern produced by symbolic algae and fungal colonies on the surface of rocks (lichens) and “planus” stands for flat. It is most commonly seen in females in the age group of the third to sixth decades of life.[1] Malignant transformation is reported to be 0.4-5% in a duration of 0.5-20 years. Although LP is considered as an autoimmune disease, its exact cause is not clear. Few researchers have suggested that LP is a chronic, cell-mediated immune disorder involving activated lymphocytes and upregulated cytokine production.[2] OLP has varied clinical presentations such as reticular, erosive, atrophic, papular, plaque-like, and bullous subtypes of which bullous is considered to be the rarest.[3] The signs and symptoms can vary according to the clinical subtypes. Reticular OLP usually presents as asymptomatic while the erosive and atrophic forms will be associated with pain or burning sensation.[3] Bullous lichen planus (BLP) is rare and may be confused with other sub-epidermal bullous dermatoses.
