On the nanobubbles interfacial properties and future applications in flotation

Stimuli-responsive nanobubbles have received increased attention for their application in spatial and temporal resolution of diagnostic techniques and therapies, particularly in multiple imaging methods, and they thus have significant potential for applications in the field of biomedicine. This review presents an overview of the recent advances in the development of stimuli-responsive nanobubbles and their novel applications. Properties of both internal- and external-stimuli responsive nanobubbles are highlighted and discussed considering the potential features required for biomedical applications. Furthermore, the methods used for synthesis and characterization of nanobubbles are outlined. Finally, novel biomedical applications are proposed alongside the advantages and shortcomings inherent to stimuli-responsive nanobubbles.

Role of nanobubbles in the flotation of fine rutile particles

Attractive technologies such as separation processes, oil exploitation and refining, flotation, mixing processes, wastewater treatment, surface cleaning, nanomaterials in nanotechnology, agronomy, etc. request new tools for increasing their effectiveness. The idea to see deepest what in real happen in the nanolevel of the liquid and colloid systems opened a new field in the area of the physicochemical science. This new field spreads out from the investigation of the nanobubble (NB) creation mechanisms to the study of their properties and the potential applications, from the plants' growth to the medicine. It is not an occasional fact that during the last years the number of the published papers regarding the NB technology increased remarkably. In this chapter gives a general overview regarding the history, the production methods/generators, and the potential applications of the NBs. Particularly, a historical issue from earliest experiments, where the existence of NBs was proved, is described. Following, the issues of the bulk and interface NB production and the information regarding their stability are covered. The properties of NBs are also mentioned and discussed, and finally the group of the suggested application fields is reported. Some emphasis has been given on the effect of the NBs on the biological applications, where new, unpublished, data are provided.

An apparatus has been developed to characterize bubble charge by measuring the swarm potential of gas bubbles. The technique allows in-process measurement of all system variables associated with bubble surface electrical charge: swarm potential, solution conductivity, gas holdup, pH and bubble size distribution. The method was validated by comparing with literature iso-electric point (iep) values. Bubble swarm potential was measured as a function of concentration and pH for a series of non-ionic surfactant frothers, ionic surfactant collectors and multivalent metal ions. Results showed good agreement with established theory and prior experimental findings. The setup is a step towards measurement of charge on flotation size range of bubble swarms.
