This article reviews the current status of spin dynamics in semiconductors which has achieved a lot of progress in the past years due to the fast growing field of semiconductor spintronics. The primary focus is the theoretical and experimental developments of spin relaxation and dephasing in both spin precession in time domain and spin diffusion and transport in spacial domain. A fully microscopic many-body investigation on spin dynamics based on the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach is reviewed comprehensively.

An analysis of spin dynamics is presented for semiconductor systems without inversion symmetry that exhibit spin splitting It is shown that electron-electron interaction reduces the rate of the Dyakonov-Perel (precession) mechanism of spin relaxation both via spin mixing in the momentum space and via the Hartree-Fock exchange interaction in spin-polarized electron gas The change in the Hartree-Fock contribution with increasing nonequilibrium spin polarization is analyzed Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results on spin dynamics in GaAs/AlGaAs-based quantum-well structures The effect of electron-electron collisions is examined not only for two-dimensional electron gas in a quantum well, but also for electron gas in a bulk semiconductor and a quantum wire

Cette these est consacree a l'etude des effets du couplage spin-orbite dans des puits quantiques semi-conducteurs dopes (GaAs et CdMnTe), par spectroscopie Raman electronique. Dans ces structures existent des champs magnetiques intrinseques (Dresselhaus et Rashba). Ces champs offrent des moyens attractifs pour manipuler le spin des electrons, mais contribuent aussi a la relaxation de spin via leur dependance avec le vecteur d'onde de l'electron (mecanisme D'yakonov-Perel'). Nous montrons que pour les modes collectifs de spin de puits quantiques, le scenario destructif D'yakonov-Perel' est transforme en un scenario constructif : les interactions Coulombiennes font emerger un champ spin-orbite collectif, proportionnel au vecteur d'onde de l'excitation, et renforce d'un facteur de plusieurs unites par rapport aux champs spin-orbite individuels. Nous mettons d'abord en evidence ces effets spin-orbite geants sur le plasmon de spin inter-sous-bande, dans des puits quantiques de GaAs. Le champ spin-orbite collectif, qui conduit a un eclatement de structure fine du spectre plasmon, est superpose a un champ magnetique exterieur et cartographie dans l'espace reciproque. Nous etudions ensuite l'onde de spin intra-sous-bande du gaz d'electrons polarise en spin, dans des puits quantiques magnetiques dilues de CdMnTe. Le champ spin-orbite collectif se superpose ici au champ Zeeman geant du compose. Nous mesurons le facteur de renforcement du champ spin-orbite collectif. Enfin, nous determinons la dependance du facteur de renforcement avec la densite electronique, et demontrons la possibilite de controler l'amplitude du champ spin-orbite collectif a l'aide d'une grille optique.

Effets spin-orbite géants sur les modes collectifs de spin de puits quantiques

We perform a study of the effect of the high in-plane electric field on the spin precession and spin dephasing due to the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism in $n$-type GaAs (100) quantum wells by constructing and numerically solving the kinetic Bloch equations. We self-consistently include all of the scattering such as electron-phonon, electron-non-magnetic impurity as well as the electron-electron Coulomb scattering in our theory and systematically investigate how the spin precession and spin dephasing are affected by the high electric field under various conditions. The hot-electron distribution functions and the spin correlations are calculated rigorously in our theory. It is found that the D'yakonov-Perel' term in the electric field provides a non-vanishing effective magnetic field that alters the spin precession period. Moreover, spin dephasing is markedly affected by the electric field. The important contribution of the electron-electron scattering to the spin dephasing is also discussed.
