We present new calibrations of far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation as derived from the total infrared to FUV luminosity ratio (IRX) and the FUV-NUV color. We find that the IRX-corrected FUV luminosities are tightly and linearly correlated with the attenuation-corrected H\alpha\ luminosities (as measured from the Balmer decrement), with a rms scatter of $\pm 0.09$ dex. The ratios of these attenuation-corrected FUV to H\alpha\ luminosities are consistent with evolutionary synthesis model predictions, assuming a constant star formation rate over 100 Myr, solar metallicity and either a Salpeter or a Kroupa IMF with lower and upper mass limits of 0.1 and 100\msun. The IRX-corrected FUV to Balmer-corrected H\alpha\ luminosity ratios do not show any trend with other galactic properties over the ranges covered by our sample objects. In contrast, FUV attenuation derived from the FUV-NUV color (UV spectral slope) show much larger random and systematic uncertainties. When compared to either Balmer-corrected H\alpha\ luminosities or IRX-corrected FUV luminosities the color-corrected FUV luminosities show $\sim 2.5$ times larger rms scatter, and systematic nonlinear deviations as functions of luminosity and other parameters. Linear combinations of 25um and 1.4GHz radio continuum luminosities with the observed FUV luminosities are also well correlated with the Balmer-corrected H\alpha\ luminosities. These results provide useful prescriptions for deriving attenuation-corrected star formation rates of galaxies based on linear combinations of UV and IR or radio luminosities, which are presented in convenient tabular form. Comparisons of our calibrations with attenuation corrections in the literature and with dust attenuation laws are also made.

Dust-Corrected Star Formation Rates of Galaxies. II. Combinations of Ultraviolet and Infrared Tracers

We present a study correlating the spatial locations of young star clusters with those of molecular clouds in NGC 5194, in order to investigate the time-scale over which clusters separate from their birth clouds. The star cluster catalogues are from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) and the molecular clouds from the Plateau de Bure Interefrometer Arcsecond Whirpool Survey (PAWS). We find that younger star clusters are spatially closer to molecular clouds than older star clusters. The median age for clusters associated with clouds is 4 Myr, whereas it is 50 Myr for clusters that are sufficiently separated from a molecular cloud to be considered unassociated. After ∼6 Myr, the majority of the star clusters lose association with their molecular gas. Younger star clusters are also preferentially located in stellar spiral arms where they are hierarchically distributed in kpc-size regions for 50–100 Myr before dispersing. The youngest star clusters are more strongly clustered, yielding a two-point correlation function with α = −0.28 ± 0.04, than the giant molecular cloud (GMCs) (α = −0.09 ± 0.03) within the same PAWS field. However, the clustering strength of the most massive GMCs, supposedly the progenitors of the young clusters for a star formation efficiency of a few per cent, is comparable (α = −0.35 ± 0.05) to that of the clusters. We find a galactocentric dependence for the coherence of star formation, in which clusters located in the inner region of the galaxy reside in smaller star-forming complexes and display more homogeneous distributions than clusters further from the centre. This result suggests a correlation between the survival of a cluster complex and its environment.

The spatial relation between young star clusters and molecular clouds in M51 with LEGUS

We present radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of star formation in self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds, modeling the formation of individual massive stars, including their UV radiation feedback. The set of simulations have cloud masses between $m_{\rm gas}=10^3$~M$_\odot$ to $3 \times 10^5$~M$_\odot$ and gas densities typical of clouds in the local universe ($\overline n_{\rm gas} \sim 1.8\times 10^2$~cm$^{-3}$) and 10$\times$ and 100$\times$ denser, expected to exist in high-redshift galaxies. The main results are: {\it i}) The observed Salpeter power-law slope and normalisation of the stellar initial mass function at the high-mass end can be reproduced if we assume that each star-forming gas clump (sink particle) fragments into stars producing on average a maximum stellar mass about $40\%$ of the mass of the sink particle, while the remaining $60\%$ is distributed into smaller mass stars. Assuming that the sinks fragment according to a power-law mass function flatter than Salpeter, with log-slope $0.8$, satisfy this empirical prescription. {\it ii}) The star formation law that best describes our set of simulation is $d\rho_*/dt \propto \rho_{gas}^{1.5}$ if $\overline n_{gas}<n_{cri}\approx 10^3$~cm$^{-3}$, and $d\rho_*/dt \propto \rho_{\rm gas}^{2.5}$ otherwise. The duration of the star formation episode is roughly $6$ cloud's sound crossing times (with $c_s=10$~km/s). {\it iii}) The total star formation efficiency in the cloud is $f_*=2\% (m_{\rm gas}/10^4~M_\odot)^{0.4}(1+\overline n_{\rm gas}/n_{\rm cri})^{0.91}$, for gas at solar metallicity, while for metallicity $Z<0.1$~Z$_\odot$, based on our limited sample, $f_*$ is reduced by a factor of $\sim 5$. {\it iv)} The most compact and massive clouds appear to form globular cluster progenitors, in the sense that star clusters remain gravitationally bound after the gas has been expelled.

Simulating star clusters across cosmic time - I. Initial mass function, star formation rates, and efficiencies

We examine the spatial distribution and mass segregation of dense molecular cloud cores in a number of nearby star forming regions (the region L1495 in Taurus, Aquila, Corona Australis, and W43) that span about four orders of magnitude in star formation activity. We used an approach based on the calculation of the minimum spanning tree, and for each region, we calculated the structure parameter 𝒬 and the mass segregation ratio ΛMSR measured for various numbers of the most massive cores. Our results indicate that the distribution of dense cores in young star forming regions is very substructured and that it is very likely that this substructure will be imprinted onto the nascent clusters that will emerge out of these clouds. With the exception of Taurus in which there is nearly no mass segregation, we observe mild-to-significant levels of mass segregation for the ensemble of the 6, 10, and 14 most massive cores in Aquila, Corona Australis, and W43, respectively. Our results suggest that the clouds’ star formation activity are linked to their structure, as traced by their population of dense cores. We also find that the fraction of massive cores that are the most mass segregated in each region correlates with the surface density of star formation in the clouds. The Taurus region with low star forming activity is associated with a highly hierarchical spatial distribution of the cores (low 𝒬 value) and the cores show no sign of being mass segregated. On the other extreme, the mini-starburst region W43-MM1 has a higher 𝒬 that is suggestive of a more centrally condensed structure. Additionally, it possesses a higher fraction of massive cores that are segregated by mass. While some limited evolutionary effects might be present, we largely attribute the correlation between the star formation activity of the clouds and their structure to a dependence on the physical conditions that have been imprinted on them by the large scale environment at the time they started to assemble.

Star formation activity and the spatial distribution and mass segregation of dense cores in the early phases of star formation

[abridged] Unbound young stellar systems, the loose ensembles of physically related young bright stars, trace the typical regions of recent star formation in galaxies. Their morphologies vary from small associations of stars to enormous stellar complexes. Being associated with star-forming regions of various sizes, they trace the regions where stars form at various scales, from compact clusters to whole galactic disks. They have been, thus, the focus of several studies with special interest on their demographics, classification, and structural morphology. Their surveys demonstrate that the clear distinction of these systems into well-defined classes is not straightforward, due to their low densities, asymmetric shapes and variety in structural parameters. Unbound stellar structures follow a hierarchical clustering pattern up to the scale of a whole star-forming galaxy. This structural pattern, which is usually characterized as self-similar or fractal, appears to be identical to that of star-forming giant molecular clouds and interstellar gas, driven mainly by turbulence cascade. In this short review, I make a concise compilation of our understanding of unbound young stellar systems across various environments in the local universe, as it is developed during the last 60 years. I present a factual assessment of the clustering behavior of star formation, as revealed from the assembling pattern of stars across loose stellar structures and its relation to the interstellar medium and the environmental conditions. I also provide a consistent account of the processes that possibly play important role in the formation of unbound stellar systems, compiled from both theoretical and observational investigations on the field.

Unbound Young Stellar Systems: Star Formation on the loose

The rate at which interstellar gas is converted into stars, and its dependence on environment, is one of the pillars on which our understanding of the visible Universe is build We present a comparison of the surface density of young stars (Σ�) and dust surface density (Σdust) across NGC 346 (N66) in 115 independent pixels of 6×6pc 2  We find a correlation between Σ� and Σdust with a considerable scatter A power law fit to the data yields a steep relation with an exponent of 26±02 We convert Σdust to gas surface density (Σgas) and Σ� to star formation rate (SFR) surface densities (ΣSFR), using simple assumptions for the gas-to-dust mass ratio and the duration of star formation The derived total SFR (4±1·10 −3 M⊙ yr −1 ) is consistent with SFR estimated from the Hα emission integrated over the Hα nebula On small scales the ΣSFR derived using Hα systematically underestimates the count-based ΣSFR, by up to a factor of 10 This is due to ionizing photons escaping the area, where the stars are counted We find that individual 36pc 2 pixels fall systematically above integrated disc-galaxies in the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram by on average a factor of ∼7 The NGC 346 average SFR over a larger area (90pc radius) lies closer to the relation but remains high by a factor of ∼3 The fraction of the total mass (gas plus young stars) locked in young stars is systematically high (∼10 per cent) within the central 15pc and systematically lower outside (2 per cent), which we interpret as variations in star formation efficiency The inner 15pc is dominated by young stars belonging to a centrally condensed cluster, while the outer parts are dominated by a dispersed population Therefore, the observed trend could reflect a change of star formation efficiency between clustered and non-clustered star-formation
