The ATLAS trigger system is essential for fulfilling the physics program of the ATLAS experiment. It consists of two steps, a hardware-based Level-1 trigger and a software-based high-level trigger to select events of interest at a suitable recording rate. Both stages underwent upgrades to cope with the challenges of LHC Run 2 data-taking at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and instantaneous luminosities up to 2×10 34 cm -2 s -1 . The design of the ATLAS muon trigger and its performance in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV are presented.

Performance of the ATLAS Muon Trigger in Run 2

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has collected several hundred million cosmic ray events during 2008 and 2009. These data were used to commission the Muon Spectrometer and to study the performance of the trigger and tracking chambers, their alignment, the detector control system, the data acquisition and the analysis programs. We present the performance in the relevant parameters that determine the quality of the muon measurement. We discuss the single element efficiency, resolution and noise rates, the calibration method of the detector response and of the alignment system, the track reconstruction efficiency and the momentum measurement. The results show that the detector is close to the design performance and that the Muon Spectrometer is ready to detect muons produced in high energy proton-proton collisions.

Commissioning of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with Cosmic Rays

The ATLAS Level-1 Trigger is the first stage of event selection for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The Level-1 Trigger is implemented with custom-built electronics, and is designed to identify the interesting collision events to be passed on to the next selection stage, reaching a decision within a latency of less than 2.5 μs. Signals from the Calorimeter and Muon Trigger System are combined in the Central Trigger Processor which processes the overall L1 Accept (L1A) decision. The Level-1 Trigger identifies event features such as missing transverse energy, candidate electrons, photons, jets and muons. This paper presents how the Level-1 Trigger System has performed in 2011 and early 2012, covering techniques used to cope with the increasing LHC luminosity. This paper also covers some of the Level-1 Trigger upgrade plans with respect to managing the increasingly demanding LHC running conditions.

The ATLAS Level-1 Trigger System

The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) employs a trigger system consisting of a first-level hardware trigger (L1) and a software-based high-level trigger. The L1 muon trigger system selects muon candidates, assigns them to the correct LHC bunch crossing and classifies them into one of six transverse-momentum threshold classes. The L1 muon trigger system uses resistive-plate chambers (RPCs) to generate the muon-induced trigger signals in the central (barrel) region of the ATLAS detector. The ATLAS RPCs are arranged in six concentric layers and operate in a toroidal magnetic field with a bending power of 1.5 to 5.5 Tm. The RPC detector consists of about 3700 gas volumes with a total surface area of more than 4000 m2. This paper reports on the performance of the RPC detector and L1 muon barrel trigger using 60.8 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Detector and trigger performance are studied using Z boson decays into a muon pair. Measurements of the RPC detector response, efficiency, and time resolution are reported. Measurements of the L1 muon barrel trigger efficiencies and rates are presented, along with measurements of the properties of the selected sample of muon candidates. Measurements of the RPC currents, counting rates and mean avalanche charge are performed using zero-bias collisions. Finally, RPC detector response and efficiency are studied at different high voltage and front-end discriminator threshold settings in order to extrapolate detector response to the higher luminosity expected for the High Luminosity LHC.

Performance of the ATLAS RPC detector and Level-1 muon barrel trigger at √(s)=13 TeV

The ATLAS Level-1 Muon Barrel Trigger is one of the main elements of the first stage of event selection of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The challenge of the Level-1 system is a reduction of the event rate from a collision rate of 40 MHz by a factor 103, using simple algorithms that can be executed in highly parallel custom electronics with a latency of the order of 1 ?s. The input stage of the Level-1 Muon consists of an array of processors receiving the full granularity of data from a dedicated detector (Resistive Plate Chambers in the Barrel). This first stage of the algorithm is performed directly on-detector, while the final stage is performed in boards mounted in the counting room, by the so-called off-detector electronics. The trigger algorithm is executed within a fixed latency, its real-time output is the multiplicity of muon candidates passing a set of programmable pT thresholds, and their topological information. The detector system and the trigger electronics are designed to achieve a safe bunch-crossing identification. In order to optimize design effort and cost, the trigger system integrates also the readout of the detector, with its own requirements on time resolution and overall data bandwidth. We present the detailed functional requirements of the Level-1 Muon Barrel system, its architecture, implementation and construction.
