Binder Jet printing is an additive manufacturing technique that dispenses liquid binding agent on powder to form a two-dimensional pattern on a layer. The layers are stacked to build a physical article. Binder Jetting (BJ) can be adapted to almost any powder with high production rates and the BJ process utilizes a broad range of technologies including printing tehniques, powder deposition, dynamic binder/powder interaction, and post-processing methods. A wide variety of materials including polymers, metals, and ceramics have been processed successfully with Binder Jet. However, developing printing and post-processing methods that maximize part performance is a remaining challenge. This article presents a broad review of technologies and approaches that have been applied in Binder Jet printing and points towards opportunities for future advancement.

Aluminum metal matrix composites (AMMCs) used in different industries from automotive to aerospace for specific purposes. Many problems hinder the full-scale industrialization of AMMCs but the main problems include wettability, particle distribution, porosity, and chemical reaction. These problems have explicit effects on mechanical, wear, and corrosion resistance properties of the composite materials. Therefore, it is essential to cope up with these problems for better quality of AMMCs. This paper focuses on issues related to AMMCs fabrication, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, machining parameter optimization, and chip analysis of AMMCs. Literature provides a guideline to researchers about present scenario of AMMC fabrication using stir casting process. Moreover, paper presents properties and applications of AMMCs.

Processing issues, machining, and applications of aluminum metal matrix composites

Pyrochlore structured Gd2Zr2O7 and Nd2Zr2O7 are produced via complex precipitation processing. A suite of characterization techniques, including FTIR, Raman, X-ray and electron diffraction, TEM, SEM as well as nitrogen sorption are employed to investigate the structural and grain size evolution of the synthesized and calcined powder. Results show that Gd2Zr2O7 with the pyrochlore structure are produced after calcination at 1400 °C for 12 h while Nd2Zr2O7 has already formed the pyrochlore structure at 1200 °C. This method allows the formation of dense materials at relatively low temperature, with bulk densities over 92% of the theoretical values achieved after sintering at 1400 °C for 50 h. This unique aqueous synthetic method provides a simple pathway to produce pyrochlore lanthanide zirconate without using either organic solvent and/or mechanical milling procedures, making the synthesis protocol an attractive potential scale-up production of highly refractory ceramics.

Gd2Zr2O7 and Nd2Zr2O7 pyrochlore prepared by aqueous chemical synthesis

The production and the supply of high quality laboratory animals have fundamental importance for the accomplishment of vanguard scientific research, with reproducibility and universality. The quality of those animals depends, largely, of the available facilities for their production and lodging, to assure the demanded sanitary control and animals’ welfare, in agreement with the ethical principles that control the activity. The facilities also have to fill out other requirements, such as: the functionality of the environments to make possible the suitable and efficient handling of the animals, facilitating the execution of the routine activities; the respect to ergonomic principles to provide a safe environment and the operators’ well being. The facilities design is of vital importance so that the mentioned requirements can be reached. The project of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) Animal House Facilities was accomplished in the year of 1964. However, by that time there were not the current recommendations with respect to the sanitary, genetic and environmental controls. The facility was planned with the objective of being a production unit and a local for keeping of defined animals from sanitary, genetic and environmental point of view. Nevertheless, the original unit drawing presents an unsuitable distribution of the area where animals are stocked and also different activities are performed. The Animal House Facilities occupy an area of 840 m, with one pavement, where the production areas and the stock of original animal models of the own Institution are distributed, as well as the maintenance of animals from other national or foreigner institutions. It supplies rats and mice for biological tests of radiopharmaceutical lots, produced in IPEN, before they be sent to hospitals and clinics spread out in Brazil, for use in Nuclear Medicine. It also supplies rats and mice for tests of odontological materials, for tests with growth hormones and for researches of new pharmaceuticals and radiopharmaceuticals, among others applications. Many of the animals models produced in IPEN are unique in Brazil and they constitute, therefore, an important patrimony that should be preserved. This paper describes the activities that have been executed in Animal House Facilities of IPEN, including the refurbishment project and the adaptation of the facilities.

Experiments were performed with colloidally processed submicron alumina powders to investigate the effect of particle size distribution on their sintering characteristics. The results showed that in the absence of agglomerates and macroscopic size segregation, a broader particle size distribution leads to two opposing phenomena during sintering—enhanced overall sintering characteristics and a higher degree of local differential densification. The former is a result of both the higher initial green density and smaller isolated pores in the final stage of sintering brought about by enhanced grain growth during the intermediate stage. The latter is promoted by a higher degree of variation in local particle packing and may negate the enhanced sintering effect at sufficiently broad particle size distribution. There therefore exists an optimum range of particle size distribution for best sinterability. Since the optimum particle size distribution may vary considerably even for a given powder system, depending on the compaction technique and conditions used, narrow size distribution powder is preferred to monosized or broad size distribution powders for high sinterability and microstructure control of powder compacts, provided that agglomerates in the starting powder are removed by appropriate means. For the agglomerate-free, submicron alumina powder system studied, the optimum particle size distribution was found to have a geometric standard deviation value lying in between 1.6 and 1.9.
