The ArcViewTM Geographic Information System (GIS) is probably the GIS that is most widely used by federal and state natural resource management agencies, industries, and non-profit institutions. As such, there is a great deal of expertise and comfort with this package within the FIA user community. The North Central Research Station and Michigan Technological University have recently cooperated in the release of ArcView GIS projects for each of the eleven North Central states. These projects facilitate analyses of current volume, net growth, mortality, and removals for any geographic region within a state, whether determined from ancillary polygon data (such as soil or watershed boundaries) or defined on-screen by the user.  Investigation and numerical determination of the effects of ecologically different regions on forest growth are important issues to be considered for sustainable forest management. In this study, differences in growth patterns of Crimean pine (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana [Lamb.] Holmboe) stands among the ecoregions located in the Kastamonu region of northwestern Turkey were investigated. For this purpose, stand-level growth models for dominant height, number of trees, basal area, and volume were fitted using the data from 274 sample plots and 293 stem analysis in even-aged, pure, and productive Crimean pine stands. The nonlinear extra sum of squares method and graphical examinations revealed that growth characteristics of these Crimean pine stands were affected by ecoregional differences. Ecoregion-based growth models, which are more flexible and have the ability to reflect the ecoregional differences in growth patterns, were found to be superior to regional models. Applying general models without any ecoregional classification resulted in biases of 5.3%, 23.1%, 5.5%, and 6.2% in the estimates of dominant height, number of trees, basal area, and volume of Crimean pine stands, respectively. The results showed that ecological differences must be considered in studies on forest growth modeling and forest management.

Three different volume equations were fitted to individual tree volume (V) data collected on 260 Cupressus 
lusitanical/Ig trees from 49 plantations in Munessa Shashemene Forest, Ethiopia. The data were first split 
randomly into equation development and equation testing data sets of equal size. Diameter at breast 
height (D) and height above the stump to the tree tip (H) were used as independent variables to predict 
volume over bark from a stump height of 30cm to the tip of the tree. The parameters, standard errors and 
mean square errors for each of the three equations were estimated with weighted least squares regression 
analysis using the modelling data set. The equations were then compared on the basis of fit statistics

Analysis of individual tree volume equations for Cupressus lusitanica in Munessa forest, Ethiopia : scientific paper

The objective of this study is to estimate the stem volume per single tree for Alnus glutinosa Gaertn subsp. barbata (C.A. Mey.)Yalt. stands of East The Blacksea Region. Double Entry Volume Table was constructed by means of the material collected at the 510 sample trees, were choosen in 55 temporary trial plots taken in the pure, even aged, untouched, normal stocked and naturally grown stands of the Alnus barbata between Persembe and Hopa-Kemalpasa. Several mehods were in evaluation of material and constructing the table. It was based on Regression Methods in obtaining Double Entry Volume Table. 6 volume models were choosen for this purpose.

Stem Volume Table of Alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn subsp. barbata (C.A. Mey.) Yalt.

In this research total volume equations were developed for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) in Northeast China. Eighteen total volume equations were fitted to volumes from Forest Inventory Analysis data of the Eastern Daxing’an Mountains in Northest China. Eight ecoregions including: Xinlin (XL), Tahe (TH), Huzhong (HZ), Shibazhan (SBZ), Hanjiayuan (HJY), Xilinji (XLJ), Tuqiang (TQ), Amuer (AME) belonging to two regions including: The northwest of the northern slope of Yilehuli Mountains (NWYLHLM) and The southeast of the northern slope of Yilehuli Mountains (SAYLHLM) were identified and the best volume equations were tested to determine if the differences between ecoregions were statistically significant. Results varied by ecoregion. Average bias prediction error ranged from -1.2% to 7.5% in XL, from -0.8% to 11.7% in TH, from -13.9% to 0.08% in HZ, from 3.5% to 10.3% in SBZ, from -8.9% to 0.9% in HJY, from -2.5% to 10.4% in XLJ, from -11.6% to 9.4% in TQ and from -11.7% to 1.5% in AME. However, the ecoregion-based volume equation developed in this study could provide more accurate information on tree growth and development of forest ecosystems to managers and planners.
