A data bus is described that allows simultaneous transfers of multiple bit words among various components within a computer, thereby permitting many parallel operations. The bus is composed of sparsely filled arrays of light emitters that are imaged onto similar arrays of detectors. Direct connections between the units in the computer are made via the light paths through the imaging system. A 2-D addressing scheme on the array reduces the number of electrical connections between the arrays of the data bus and the computer components to which they are connected. The result is a data bus with dedicated optical paths to all units in the computer but without the need for a large number of electrical connections. The operation of the bus and the addressing and driving methods are described, and results of preliminary experiments are given.

High concurrency data bus using arrays of optical emitters and detectors

Fiber optic data bus systems have generated considerable recent interest and have been discussed by a number of authors. Two major data bus configurations have been developed; the T system, which is a serial configuration with access couplers connected along a single bus line; and the star system, which has only one coupler and parallel lines going to each terminal. The star system has been shown to be the best approach for a system with a large number of terminals; however, the T system requires less total cable, with its attendant penalties of cost, weight, and volume, and therefore offers the best approach for certain small systems. One approach to the T data bus system involves a fixed tap ratio (ratio of power tapped off to the terminal detector to power incident into the coupler) for the T couplers, indeFig. 1. A general discussion of military applications of integrated optics and fiber optics is presented. Specific applications discussed are: 1) a multiterminal multiplexed data highway for aircraft and shipboard use; 2) optical fibers as tethers; 3) a 10.6-/spl mu/m heterodyne detector; and 4) integrated optical phased arrays.

Optical "T" and Multiple "T" access couplers designed for tapped trunk line multi-terminal communication systems which use bundles of multimode fibers as the transmission media have been investigated. The particular coupler designs tested used bent pyrex rods for bifurcation and scrambling. Coupler throughput losses (not counting packing fraction losses) are 1.5 - 2.5 dB.
