In this paper experiments are described that have led to the assignment of spins of a large number of s- and p-wave resonances in reactions of epithermal neutrons with the nuclei {sup 238}U and {sup 113}Cd. The gamma-ray spectra of the (n,{gamma}) reactions have been measured using the time-of-flight technique at the GELINA pulsed neutron source facility. For the present spin determinations we have exploited the fact that the population through gamma radiation of low-lying nuclear states from the compound nucleus is dependent on the resonance spin. Spins of resonances in reactions of neutrons with 238 U and 113 Cd

The175,176Lu(n,γ)176,177Lu reactions have been studied at the JINR Fast Pulsed Reactor IBR-30. Using a time-of-flight technique,γ-ray spectra on isolated resonances have been measured. From analysis of secondaryγ-transition intensities resonance spins have been deduced for both reactions studied. Statistical treatment of the secondaryγ-ray intensities has shown, that population of low-lying levels in the product nuclei176,177Lu fluctuate from resonance to resonance stronger than is expected on the basis of the statistical model. A hypothesis is advanced, that the increased fluctuation is a consequence of a statistical correlation between partial radiation widths for the transitions of intermediate energies and the reduced neutron widths.

Statistical properties of secondary γ-transitions in the 175,176 Lu(n res , γ) 176,177 Lu reactions

The isomeric ratios for the neutron capture reaction $^{176}$Lu($n,\gamma$) to the $J^{\pi}=5/2^-$ 761.7 keV, $T_{1/2}$ =32.8 ns and the $J^{\pi}=15/2^+$, 1356.9 keV, $T_{1/2}$=11.1 ns levels of $^{177}$Lu have been measured for the first time. The experiment was carried out with the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Measured isomeric ratios are compared with talys calculations using different models for photon strength functions, level densities, and optical potentials. In order to reproduce the experimental γ-ray spectra, a low-energy resonance must be added in the photon strength function used in our Hauser-Feshbach calculations.

The173Yb(n, γ)174Yb reaction was measured at the Pulsed Fast Reactor. Intensities of 9 primary transitions toJπ=1+, 2 or 3+ levels below 1960 keV for 9 resonances withJπ=2− were examined. Statistically significant correlation between reduced neutron widths and partial radiation widths has been observed.
