Hypochlorous Acid: A Review.

The survivability of viruses in natural and engineered systems impacts public health. Inactivation mechanisms in the environment have been described for nonenveloped viruses, but it remains unclear how the membrane layer of enveloped viruses influences inactivation. We applied molecular tools and high-resolution mass spectrometry to measure reactions in the genome, proteins, and lipids of enveloped Pseudomonas phage Phi6 during inactivation by free chlorine and UV254. Free chlorine readily penetrated the lipid membrane to react with proteins in the nucleocapsid and polymerase complex. The most reactive Phi6 peptides were approximately 150 times more reactive with free chlorine than the most reactive peptides reported in nonenveloped coliphage MS2. The inactivation kinetics of Phi6 by UV254 was comparable with those of nonenveloped adenovirus and coliphage MS2 and were driven by UV254 reactions with viral genomes. Reactivity of Enveloped Virus Genome, Proteins, and Lipids with Free Chlorine and UV254

After officially declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), drastic measures to restrict human movements to contain the COVID-19 infection are employed by most of the countries. Maintaining high personal hygiene by frequent handwashing and be vigilant of clinical signs are widely recommended to reduce the disease burden. The national and international health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the WHO, have provided guidelines for prevention and treatment suggestions. Here, in this brief article, based on available clinical information, the author discusses why handwashing could be protective of COVID-19 infections. Although a detailed and in-depth discussion of various preventive and protective measures is beyond the scope of this article, this review will focus on the utility of frequent handwashing in minimizing the risk of spreading COVID-19 infection.

Covid-19: critical discussion on the applications and implications of chemicals in sanitizers and disinfectants

Ebola virus (EBOV) disease outbreaks, as well as the ability of EBOV to persist in the environment under certain conditions, highlight the need to develop effective decontamination techniques against the virus. We evaluated the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide vapor (HPV) to inactivate MS2 and Phi6 bacteriophages, the latter a recommended surrogate for EBOV. The phages were inoculated onto six material types with and without the presence of whole human blood. The inoculated materials were then exposed to either a high or low concentration of HPV for various elapsed times. The phages were also recovered from positive controls at these same elapsed times, to assess environmental persistence and decontamination efficacy. Low concentration hydrogen peroxide vapor (LCHP; 25 ppm) was effective against both phages on all materials without the presence of blood at 2 h. LCHP was ineffective against the phages in the presence of blood, on all materials, even with a 3-day contact time. Higher concentrations of HPV (>400 ppm) with contact times of 24-32 h achieved approximately 2-6 log reduction of the phages in the presence of blood.

Evaluating the Environmental Persistence and Inactivation of MS2 Bacteriophage and the Presumed Ebola Virus Surrogate Phi6 Using Low Concentration Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor.

To prevent Ebola transmission, frequent handwashing is recommended in Ebola Treatment Units and communities. However, little is known about which handwashing protocol is most efficacious. We evaluated six handwashing protocols (soap and water, alcohol-based hand sanitizer (ABHS), and 0.05% sodium dichloroisocyanurate, high-test hypochlorite, and stabilized and non-stabilized sodium hypochlorite solutions) for 1) efficacy of handwashing on the removal and inactivation of non-pathogenic model organisms and, 2) persistence of organisms in rinse water. Model organisms E. coli and bacteriophage Phi6 were used to evaluate handwashing with and without organic load added to simulate bodily fluids. Hands were inoculated with test organisms, washed, and rinsed using a glove juice method to retrieve remaining organisms. Impact was estimated by comparing the log reduction in organisms after handwashing to the log reduction without handwashing. Rinse water was collected to test for persistence of organisms. Handwashing resulted in a 1.94-3.01 log reduction in E. coli concentration without, and 2.18-3.34 with, soil load; and a 2.44-3.06 log reduction in Phi6 without, and 2.71-3.69 with, soil load. HTH performed most consistently well, with significantly greater log reductions than other handwashing protocols in three models. However, the magnitude of handwashing efficacy differences was small, suggesting protocols are similarly efficacious. Rinse water demonstrated a 0.28-4.77 log reduction in remaining E. coli without, and 0.21-4.49 with, soil load and a 1.26-2.02 log reduction in Phi6 without, and 1.30-2.20 with, soil load. Chlorine resulted in significantly less persistence of E. coli in both conditions and Phi6 without soil load in rinse water (p<0.001). Thus, chlorine-based methods may offer a benefit of reducing persistence in rinse water. We recommend responders use the most practical handwashing method to ensure hand hygiene in Ebola contexts, considering the potential benefit of chlorine-based methods in rinse water persistence.

 Dilating Disk control valves were installed in a refinery to monitor their performance from a process control and fugitive emissions standpoint. By using a patented stem sealing system, the stem seal is capable of reducing fugitive emissions from the valve stem down to 0 ppm. This claim was to be evaluated in the field under application conditions in accordance with the methodology reported in EPA Method 21 and UNI EN 1544 standard.
 The Dilating Disk control valves were allowed to run in service for approximately 9 months before fugitive emissions testing was conducted. During the 9 months of run time, and prior to the fugitive emissions testing, the valves were monitored for how well they controlled the flow rate, reacted to control room signals, were positioned at the correct percent open, and provided the correct pressure drop. After the 9 months of run time, and experiencing no operational issues, the fugitive emissions testing was scheduled.
 This project was conducted at an Eni refinery in Italy, the group within Eni, Eniprogetti, performed a monitoring activity focused on evaluating and measuring possible fugitive emissions from five valves installed in Feb 2020.
 The fugitive emissions were measured by the Eniprogetti team in November 2020 according to the methodology reported in EPA 435/1995 reference (EPA Method 21) and UNI EN 1544 standard. By using a certified portable FID/PID analyzer, the monitoring was conducted on four of the five valves, as one valve was not operating at the time.
