Data glove is one of the devices that can express human intention via detecting hand motion with high precision. In recent years, flourished applications have been driven by data gloves from human–machine interaction (HMI) to biomedical sciences. To understand the latest research status and grasp the development direction, this study provides a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art for data gloves. Specifically, we take the research topics of hardware design, algorithms for gesture recognition, and the application areas as the entry point. The detailed elaboration of key algorithms techniques, from data processing to classification, for hand gesture (HG) recognition is made and quantitative analysis of the recent research achievements is summarized. We found that hand motion detection with data gloves is mostly employed for gesture recognition, and the majority of studies are focused on the performance validation of gesture recognition, in particular for static gestures. A systematic illustration of the current research challenges as well as the future directions of related data gloves are finally discussed.

Crop cultivation is one of the prime sources which determines a nation’s prosperity and economic growth. But most of the farmers face difficulties to survive due to lack of enough labors, inappropriate and traditional methods followed to monitor agricultural fields and plant growth etc. As technology has evolved, it is possible to automate the various phases of farming activities. There are many standard sensors available to remotely monitor the soil moisture content, pH content, fire detection in the field, intruder detection etc. All these sensors sense the information and is fed to a central coordinator which will process the data and initiate necessary actions. All these are done over internet and thus the concept can be called as Smart farming using Internet of Things. It is also possible to analyze the image of plant leaf to identify the various plant dis-eases with the help of Machine Vision. Our model thus reduces the farmer’s overhead using IoT and computational intelligence. 

An Integrated Framework for Crop Cultivation using Internet of Things and Computational Intelligence

Virtual fencing is a technique for animal control where a physical infrastructure is not needed to implement a fence. Control is achieved by modifying the behavior of the animal by means of one or more sensory signals, which may be auditory and/or electrical. These signals are transmitted to the animal when it tries to cross an electronically constructed boundary. This demarcation can be of any shape that respects geometric properties. While invisible to the naked eye, it is detectable by an electronic device worn by the animal. Due to its potential, this notion of virtual fencing for the management of free-range livestock is attracting growing interest in the literature. First, he advanced ecological management by transforming physical labor into cognitive labor. It is proved that there is a considerable number of methods that rely on stress in the growth of virtual fences, which can be classified in three classes: the first one is interested in virtual fences that focus on auditory stimuli, the second one is the one that depends on electrical stimuli and the third class merges both. These three categories can be divided into two classes: the first class relates to static virtual fences and the second class relates to dynamic virtual fences. The purpose of this work is to first provide an overview of the existing approaches inherent to virtual fences while noting their technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Then, we compare the different virtual fencing approaches and the associated localization/delimitation techniques. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges for optimal animal control. 

Virtual Fences: A Systematic Literature Review

This paper proposes a novel Human-Robot Interactive System where users can interact with the robotic system using hand gestures, even from a distance, through a smartphone-based IoT-Controller Framework. The system is primarily designed to help people with vocal and hearing impairments. A mobile application records user gestures shown in front of a smartphone and sends the data to a server. The server performs gesture recognition and forms a command which is sent to the robotic system. The robotic system performs the required task based on the given command. The robotic system is set to carry out an object pick and place operation based on the gesture commands in the system’s initial experiments. The accuracy of both the gesture recognition model and the object grasping task were measured, along with the time taken for the system to complete the entire task. Experimental results showed that the system performed well, achieving 100% accuracy in object grabbing and gesture recognition, and the average time taken by the system to complete the robotic pick and place task was around 78 seconds.

Remote Operated Human Robot Interactive System using Hand Gestures for Persons with Disabilities

Internet of Things (IoT) made a tremendous change in the field of automation technologies. Objects or Things in the real world can be converted into a ‘smart object’ by attaching some sensors or actuators. These devices are capable of communicating each other using internet. Light weight protocols make the IoT system more user friendly. But one of the critical challenges faced by any IoT designer is to provide the data security for IoT applications. Though the ‘things’ are connected to a network, there is a high chance of data stealing or data manipulation. Block chain can be used to ensure data security, scalability and reliability of IoT applications. We propose a secure blockchain based IoT architecture to assure data security. Blockchain is utilized for tracking and coordinating millions of connected components. Blockchain uses decentralized approach which can prevent from single points of failures thereby creates a stable interoperable secure system. Cryptographic algorithms can be used for securing the sensor data. Thus, our model enhances not only security but also the privacy concerns of an end user.

An Integrated Blockchain Approach to Model Secure Internet of Things based Systems

It is extremely difficult for mute people to convey messages to ordinary people. Since ordinary people are not accustomed to signing language, here the proposed design is a smart speaking system that helps mute people to convey their message to ordinary people using hand locomotive gestures. The system consists of a glove with a flex sensor, accelerometer, Arduino Uno board, speaker, voice module, and liquid crystal display. Around eight messages are stored inside the Arduino board. The system interprets the person's hand motion for different variations of hand movement. The Arduino board receives input sensor values and then processes them. A message is assigned to each sensor value. Once the message gets a match, the corresponding message is spoken out through the speaker and the message will be displayed on the liquid crystal display. Thus, a fully functional smart speaking system can be developed to help mute people.

Wearable Gesture Detection Glove for Mute People

An automated irrigation system is developed to optimize the usage of water for agriculture crops. The automated system saves up to 90% compared to traditional irrigation practices. Because of its autonomous energy and low cost, the system has the potential to use water efficiently. In this paper, we are reviewing different techniques used for fencing and monitoring moisture content of the soil in agriculture fields. This paper stresses on the need for a cloud-based platform to manage database and android application. The data is sent to the microcontroller and is given to the server. The processed data would be stored in a database, further allowing the data to be interpreted simply and flexibly. A small compact autonomous system is developed and makes use of solar power. With the help of a wireless sensor, the data is collected and stored in a database for further consultation and analysis. The proposed system is capable of recognizing any unauthorized entry and provides realtime surveillance. The user will be alerted by sending an SMS to the mobile phone via GSM communication if anything goes wrong.
