Vegetable and floricultural crops are major components of the horticultural industry in India. Weed management is an important aspect in the successful production of these crops. Weeds reduce crop yields, lower their quality and increase costs of production. They host pests and diseases thereby raising the need to control them as well. Weed management may involve non-chemical and or chemical methods. The decision of method to be used depends on the environmental conditions, available labour, weed population, the crop, desired management practices and the cost of controlling weeds. The major aim is to manage the weed population to a level below that will cause a reduction in economic return for the farmer. An integration of different control methods, therefore, needs to be addressed in future research. Furthermore, specific researches on weed management in horticultural crops in India need to be addressed. This article attempts to highlight important weed flora of vegetables and flower crops in India and some of the management strategies that could be used to manage these weeds.

Weed management in vegetable and flower crop-based systems

The present experiment was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) during winter season to evaluate the effect of weed management practices on the growth and flowering of chrysanthemum. The experiment consisted of eleven treatments comprising of hand weeding, mulching, herbicides and unweeded check replicated three times in randomized block design. Maximum plant height, plant spread and number of branches plant−1 were recorded on application of pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT+pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1at 45 DAT followed by pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT which had at par effect. Highest average flower weight, number of flowers plant−1, flower diameter and earliest days to first bud appearance was obtained with pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT+pendimethalin(extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1at 45 DAT which was having same effect as with pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT. The minimum dry matter and nitrogen uptake was noted under pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT+pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1 at 45 DAT. Application of pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT+pendimethalin (extra) @ 0.64 kg ha−1 at 45 DAT was found superior for parameters under observations, but it was found to have at par effect with pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ha−1+one hand weeding at 40 DAT.

Long Term Effect of Integrated Weed Management on Growth and Yield Attributes in Chilli

The field experiments were carried out at the “Instructional farm” of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, West Tripura, Chebri, Tripura during Rabi season of 2014 to evaluate the effect of pendimethalin in controlling weeds of Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.). Treatment comprised of T1: Hand weeding at 30 DAT, T2: Pendimethalin (@ 1.5 lit/ha): 3–5 DAT, T3: Pendimethalin (@ 1.5 lit/ha) 3–5 DAT + Hand weeding 30 DAT, T4: Control. It is observed that weed dry matter at all the stages of crop growth period is significantly higher in case of un weeded control due to unchecked growth of weeds; lowest weed dry biomass 4.34, 11.49, 33.54 and highest weed control efficiency (WCE %) 84.23, 73.39, 47.61 recorded at 30, 60 and 90 DAT incase of Pendimethalin (@ 1.5 lit ha−1 at 3–5 DAT + Hand Weeding at 30 DAT at all the stages of crop along with highest yield attribute 21.43t/ha.

Effect of Pendimethalin on Weed flora and Yield component of Brinjal under Agro-climatic condition of Tripura

Chemical weed control.

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of weed management practices on weeds as well as crop growth and yield parameters of brinjal along with the economics of weed management during winter season of 2009–10 at the Department of Horticulture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur. It was observed that the weed Parthenium hysterophorus dominated the experimental field. All the weed management treatments significantly reduced the dry matter of weeds and increased fruit yield of the crop significantly over unweeded check. Among the treatments, pendimethalin (Extra) (0.64 kg/ha) pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (Extra) (0.64 kg/ha) at 45 DAT as postemergence resulted in better performance followed by pendimethalin (1.0 kg/ha) pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 45 DAT with respect to growth and yield parameters due to effective weed management in brinjal. Maximum benefit: cost ratio was also obtained with pendimethalin (extra) (0.64 kg/ha) pretransplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (Extra) (0.64 kg/ha) at 45 DAT.
