A protective coating alternated with ZrB2 and MoSi2 laminated layers was designed and prepared on carbon/carbon (C/C) composites with SiC inner layer by supersonic atmosphere plasma spraying. After ablated at a heat flux of 2.4 MW/m2 for 30s, ZrB2/MoSi2 laminated coating was in good condition with a linear growth rate and mass gain rate of 1.67 μm/s and 0.44 mg/s, respectively. From the central region to the border region, the calculated residual thermal stress of ZrB2/MoSi2 laminated coating decreased at first and then increased rapidly, illustrating the size change of the generated laminated cracks. The alternate design of ZrB2 layers for erosion and MoSi2 layers for oxidation resulted in the laminated stress distribution and improved ablation resistance.

Long-time ablation behavior of the multilayer alternating CVD-(SiC/HfC)3 coating for carbon/carbon composites

The thickness of the different HfC coatings from 20 μm to 50 μm were prepared on the surface of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). The microstructure and thermal stress of the coatings after ablation were investigated, as well as the effect of thickness and thermal stress on the ablation resistance of the HfC coating was analyzed. After being ablated at a heat flux of 2.4 MW/m2 for 60 s, the thermal stress gradually increased at first and then rapidly increased with the increasing thickness of coating. The results indicated that the moderate coating thickness can effectively release the thermal stress generated during the ablation process. The 40 μm-thick HfC coating showed the best ablation resistance with the mass ablation rate and line ablation rate were only 0.13 mg/s and 0.09 μm/s, respectively.

Effects of microstructure evolution on the oxidation behavior and high-temperature tribological properties of AlCrN/TiAlSiN multilayer coatings

To protect carbon/carbon composites against ablation at ultra-high temperature, a novel HfC-SiC gradient coating was fabricated by a facile one-step chemical vapor co-deposition. The phase composition, microstructure, bonding strength and ablation behaviour were investigated, and the mechanical properties of ablated coatings were characterized as well. The bonding strength of HfC-SiC gradient coating is 19.6 ± 0.5 N (176% higher than that of HfC coating). HfC-SiC gradient coating shows excellent ablation resistance under oxyacetylene flame. The mass and linear ablation rate of HfC-SiC coating were only 0.153 ± 0.02 mg·s−1 and −0.998 ± 0.08 μm·s−1, respectively. After ablation for 60 s, the hardness and elastic modulus of ablated HfC-SiC gradient coating are higher than those of ablated HfC coating. The excellent ablation resistance of HfC-SiC gradient coating results from its high bonding strength and the adhesion effect of Hf-Si-O sticky glass phase.
