They are systems of collaborating computational entities which are in intensive connection with the surrounding physical world and its on-going processes, providing and using, at the same time, data-accessing and data-processing services available on the Internet. Cyber-physical production systems (CPPS), relying on the latest, and the foreseeable further developments of computer science, information and communication technologies on one hand, and of manufacturing science and technology, on the other, may lead to the 4th industrial revolution, frequently noted as Industrie 4.0. The paper underlines that there are significant roots in general – and in particular to the CIRP community – which point towards CPPS. Expectations towards research in and implementation of CPS and CPPS are outlined and some case studies are introduced. Related new R&D challenges are highlighted.

A novel surface micro-texturing process is proposed that is capable of generating extremely scalable periodic patterns on a workpiece surface. The process, henceforth named as 'biprism interference micro-machining' utilizes a two-beam interference pattern generated by a Fresnel biprism placed coaxially in the path of a laser pulse to fabricate periodic micro-channels on aluminum surfaces. The channels were fabricated over an area of approximately 8 mm × 6 mm and with a periodicity of 9 and 21 μm, by using custom-built two-faceted biprisms with side angles of 4° and 1.5°, respectively. A beam propagation simulation was carried out to predict the intensity distribution and contrast of the intensity pattern of laser pulse at the workpiece surface. The entire process takes 1–8 laser pulses, thereby demonstrating ultra-fast speed and scalability. Also, the efficiency, precision and resolution of the process are higher than that of conventional mask-based and interference-based micro-machining.

A Novel Desktop Deformation-Based Micro Surface Texturing System

The purpose of this work is to present an investigation of the force system generated during spade drill-bit drilling processes that is a prerequisite for the design of spade-drills with improved performance. The technical literature offers no references to this type of bit and process; hence an approach based on the well-established mechanistic force prediction methods will be used. The force and torque prediction models are based on a complete analytical model of a generalized spade bit that takes into account the cutting action of all the characteristic cutting edges of the spade bit, namely of its chisel edge, tip and major cutting edges. In conjunction with the model an efficient model calibration method is also introduced and experimentally verified.

Double-Sided Incremental Forming (DSIF) is a developing sheet metal manufacturing process that has gained a lot of attention in recent years due to its inherent flexibility, low-overhead cost, and die-less nature. However, it can be challenging to define the tool gap so as to achieve a desired pressure through the sheet thickness since one must first predict sheet thinning. In this investigation, a novel part design is proposed which varies in-plane curvature as a function of depth. A finite element model for DSIF is developed and the strain histories in various regions are extracted. It was concluded that if the supporting tool loses contact with the sheet, localized necking can occur prior to part failure. Additionally, part geometry can have significant effects on the tool contact area which, consequently, affects the evolution of strain.

An investigation into the mechanics of double-sided incremental forming using finite element methods

The throughput of the injection molding process is restricted by the cooling time of each cycle which accounts for three-fourths of the cycle time. Manufacturing molds out of copper or copper alloys can reduce the cooling time because of their high thermal conductivity, but mold life is reduced because copper has much lower hardness and strength than traditional mold materials such as steels. By layering steel onto copper using directed energy deposition, the advantages of both materials can be exploited to reduce cycle time while maintaining mold durability. In this study, 17-4 PH stainless steel was deposited onto a copper substrate to demonstrate the potential to create multi-material injection molds.
