Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

As environmental regulations are becoming stricter, new techniques must be developed for the removal of trace concentrations of heavy metals from mineral processing effluents. Foam separation techniques are an interesting alternative to more conventional processes such as ion exchange because of their efficiency to treat dilute aqueous streams. In this paper, the simultaneous removal of Cd2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ from dilute aqueous solutions was investigated by using sodium dodecyl sulfate as collector and triethylenetetramine as auxiliary ligand via a series of batch-mode flotation experiments. Experimental results showed that Cd2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ can be completely removed in one step under the following conditions: pH 9.50, flotation time = 120 min, auxiliary concentration 0.1 mmol L−1, collector-to-metals molar ratio 2:1, ethanol concentration 0.5% (v/v), and a nitrogen gas flowrate set at 25 mL min−1. An excess in auxiliary ligand concentration yielded to low removal efficiency. The modeled speciation of the examined system suggested that the metals are separated from the bulk solution to the foam phase via a combination of ion flotation and precipitate flotation.

Removal of Cadmium, Zinc, and Manganese from Dilute Aqueous Solutions by Foam Separation

The management of bauxite residue (BR) is a major issue for the aluminum industry because of its high alkalinity and the large volumes generated. Therefore, the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) with or without other metals from BR and utilization of the generated residue can contribute to a solution on the management problem of BR and it can be one of the options to meet the demand of REEs. In view of the above, the selective recovery of REEs over major elements such as iron by direct acid leaching was studied initially. From the leaching results, either the recovery of REEs was low or the dissolution of iron was high. To address that, iron was removed from BR by smelting. The slag generated after smelting was leached with mineral acids. The selectivity of REEs over iron was greatly improved. However, the high level of alumina presence in BR required a large amount of fluxes thereby increasing the energy consumption in smelting. Hence, the removal (and recovery) of alumina from BR by sodium carbonate roasting was carried out. The sample, after alumina removal, was smelted and the REEs were successfully recovered from slag by leaching with mineral acids. An alternative process, called sulfation–roasting–leaching, was also developed by which the REEs can be selectively leached. The scandium recovery, however, was low. Preliminary energy and economic analysis showed that alkali roasting–smelting–leaching and sulfation–roasting–leaching were the most promising processes for the treatment of BR.

Influence of irradiance on the photochemical reduction of europium(III)

Present parametric study shows that the flowrate, number of channels, hydrodynamic resistances and phase ratio significantly affect the maldistribution in parallel microfluidic reactors ( i.e. , numbering-up). Especially the effect of flow rate and phase ratio has not been reported before. However, these findings are of a qualitative nature due to a high degree of variability between experiments. Additional experiments show that the stable point of operation easily shifts in the considered set-ups, explaining this variability. Therefore, a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) in SPSS is introduced to partially compensate for this variance and, also, manage the large data set that results from a parametric study. It is shown that introducing advanced statistical methods can provide additional insights and can further push the field of numbering-up. • Geometry, flowrate and phase ratio were varied in manifolds and bifurcations. • The effect on the maldistribution of two-phase flow was investigated. • MANOVA was performed with SPSS to analyze the large data set. • Most novel is the effect of flowrate and phase ratio, as well as the use of MANOVA. • The stable point of operation randomly shifts with time.
