In a first configuration, the first memory area may be configured as a write memory, and the second memory area may be configured as a read memory. Subsequent to writing to and reading from the memory in accordance with the first configuration, the first memory area may be configured as a read memory, and the second memory area may be configured as a write memory.

The term ray tracing is commonly associated with highly realistic images but certainly not with interactive graphics. However, with the increasing hardware resources of today, interactive ray tracing is becoming a reality and offers a number of benefits over the traditional rasterization pipeline. The goal of this report is to provide a better understanding of the potential and challenges of interactive ray tracing. We start with a review of the problems associated with rasterization based rendering and contrast this with the advantages offered by ray tracing. Next we discuss different approaches towards interactive ray tracing using techniques such as approximation, hybrid rendering, and direct optimization of the ray tracing algorithm itself. After a brief review of interactive ray tracing on supercomputers we describe implementations on standard PCs and clusters of networked PCs. This system improves ray tracing performance by more than an order of magnitude and outperforms even high-end graphics hardware for complex scenes up to tens of millions of polygons. Finally, we discuss recent research towards implementing ray tracing in hardware as an alternative to current graphics chips. This report ends with a discussion of the remaining challenges and and the future of ray tracing in interactive 3D graphics.

A data processing unit having a field of clocked logic cells (PAEs) which is operable in different configuration states and a clock preselecting means for preselecting logic cell clocking. The clock preselecting means is designed in such a way that, depending on the state, a first clock is preselected at least at a first cell (PAE) and an additional clock is preselected at least at an additional cell.

Methods and devices for treating and processing data

We present a small-scale FPGA-coprocessor board for PCI-based systems. It features one XC3195A FPGA (<9 K gate equivalents), three XC4013 devices (each up to 13 K gate equivalents), 2 MByte of Flash Memory, 256 KByte of high-speed SRAM and a 16-bit high-speed multiply-and-accumulate unit. The board was designed to speed up algorithms from scientific visualization, in particular the visualization of 3D-datasets. Such algorithms show a large number of short integer or bit operations, which can efficiently be off-loaded from the CPU to an FPGA-coprocessor. Although being exactly tailored to our application, the accelerator constitutes a versatile platform for other algorithms from image or speech processing. The PCI-bus provides the necessary transfer bandwidth for dataflow-intensive computations.
