Genetic stability and phytochemical analysis of the in vitro regenerated plants of Dendrobium nobile Lindl., an endangered medicinal orchid

Environmental stresses including salinity, drought, cold, warmer temperatures, alterations in precipitation patterns, fluctuations of weather events, and increasing insect and disease infestations negatively affect crop production and nutritional values. This situation becomes further complicated due to the changing climatic conditions, thus raising concern about food security worldwide. Some worst-case projections indicated that by 2100, CO2 concentrations will reach 950 parts per million, temperatures will climb by 3.5 to more than 8°C, sea level will rise by more than 2.4 meters, and the average farmland drought risk index will increase from 52.45 to 129. In addition, average precipitation will increase by 1%–3% in some areas and atmospheric water vapor will increase by 6%–7% for every degree of temperature rise. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple crop in many parts of the world. The main objective of this review is to highlight the prospects of rice for future climatic conditions. The present review depicts the advantages and prospects of rice and addresses why rice is a better option as a cereal crop for the future situations for food and nutritional sustainability. The impact of climate change on food and nutritional security can be mitigated by developing biotic and abiotic stress-tolerant and biofortified rice varieties. These rice cultivars can withstand the negative effects of climate change while also meeting the nutritional needs of future generations. Furthermore, this review underlines the forthcoming issues and measures that should be addressed to assure a sustainable food and nutritional supply in the era of global climate change.

The Effects of Different Concentrations Cytokinins on the in vitro Multiplication of Plantain (Musa sp.)

The present study develops a protocol for rapid in vitro micropropagation of a critically endangered and floriculturally most important epiphytic orchid, Dendrobium primulinum Lindl. through the culture of small shoot tip explants (0.3 to 0.5mm) derived from in vitro grown seedlings. The shoot tip explants cultured on solidified Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium and MS medium alone or supplemented with combination of various concentrations of growth regulators; α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), produced shoots and multiple shoots. The maximum numbers of rootless healthy shoots were observed on MS medium fortified with BAP 1.5 mgl -1 with an average value of 4.5 shoots per culture where shoot multiplication was initiated after 5 weeks of culture of shoot tip. Among the different tested combination, MS medium with BAP (1.5 mg l -1 ) and NAA (0.5 mg l -1 ) were most effective for the shoot multiplication. MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of rooting hormones viz. NAA, IAA and IBA showed positive response in development of roots, except NAA 0.5 mgl -1 . The rooting was observed after 3 weeks of culture of shoot tip. The various concentrations of IAA and IBA were found to be effective hormone for rooting of D. primulinum in comparison to NAA. The best rooting response was observed on MS medium with exogenous supply of IAA 0.5 mgl -1 . The well developed in vitro rooted plantlets were hardened successfully in the potting mixture containing cocopeat and sphagnum moss in the ratio of 2:1. Nearly 70% of plantlets survived.

The request for new flavourings increases every year. Consumer perception that everything natural is better is causing an increase demand for natural aroma additives. Biotechnology has become a way to get natural products. γ-Decalactone is a peach-like aroma widely used in dairy products, beverages and others food industries. In more recent years, more and more studies and industrial processes were endorsed to cost-effect this compound production. One of the best-known methods to produce γ-decalactone is from ricinoleic acid catalyzed by Yarrowia lipolytica, a generally regarded as safe status yeast. As yet, several factors affecting γ-decalactone production remain to be fully understood and optimized. In this review, we focus on the aromatic compound γ-decalactone and its production by Y. lipolytica. The metabolic pathway of lactone production and degradation are addressed. Critical analysis of novel strategies of bioprocess engineering, metabolic and genetic engineering and other strategies for the enhancement of the aroma productivity are presented.

The effect of different explants and concentrations of BAP and NAA on induction of callus and plant regeneration of brinjal cv. Jhumki were investigated. The treatment combinations were BAP (0. 2.0. 3.0, and 4.0 mg/l) and NAA (0. 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/l). The rate of callus formation varied in different treatments. The highest amount of callus (48.66%) was produced on MS medium containing 2.0 mg/l BAP and 0.5 mg/l NAA from stem, and 8.2 days required for callus induction. The highest fresh weight of callus was 1.12g from stem and 0.48g from root. The number of shoot regenerated through callus from stem containing 2.0 mg/l BAP and 0.5 mg/l NAA was 3.4 (23.287%) and days required for 38.8 days.
