Meshes have become a widespread and popular representation of models in computer graphics. Morphing techniques aim at transforming a given source shape into a target shape. Morphing techniques have various applications ranging from special effects in television and movies to medical imaging and scientific visualization. Not surprisingly, morphing techniques for meshes have received a lot of interest lately. Thiswork sums up recent developments in the area of mesh morphing. It presents a consistent framework to classify and compare various techniques approaching the same underlying problems from different angles.

Recent Advances in Mesh Morphing

A character is represented in a character generator as a set of polygons The character may be manipulated using three-dimensional animation techniques A code for a character may be used to access a set of curves defining the outline of the character This set of curves is transformed into a set of polygons The set of polygons may be rendered as a three-dimensional object The set of polygons may be created by converting the curves into sets of connected line segments and then tessellating the polygon defined by the line segments Animation properties are represented using a normalized scale along a path or over time Animation may be provided in a manner that is independent of the spatial and temporal resolution of the video to which it is applied Such animation may be applied to characters defined by a set of polygons Various three-dimensional spatial transformations, lighting effects and other colorizations may be provided A user interface for editing a character string may provide two alternate displays A first display allows a user to input and view any desired portion of the character string for the purpose of editing A second display allows a user to view how the character string appears at a selected point in time during a titling effect for the purpose of animation In both displays, the text is displayed in a three-dimensional form This interface may be combined with a timeline editing interface for editing an associated video program, or other user interface, to permit layering of titling effects and adjustment of animation properties, positioning and timing

Animation of three-dimensional characters along a path for motion video sequences

Method and apparatus for three-dimensional alphanumeric character animation

It is becoming a common trend that many designers work on a very complex assembly together in a collaborative environment. In this environment, every designer should be able to see the whole assembly in a full detail or in a rough shape at least. Even though the hardware technology is being improved very rapidly, it is very difficult to display a very complex assembly at a speed to allow smooth interactions for designers. This problem could be solved if a designer could manipulate his portion of the assembly in a full resolution while the remaining portion of the assembly is displayed in a rough resolution. It is also desired that the remaining portion is converted to the full resolution when needed. To realize this environment, the capabilities to simplify the portions of an assembly and to reset to the original resolution should be added to the current CAD systems. Thus operators realizing multi-resolution on B-rep are proposed in this paper, They are: wrap-around, smooth-out, and thinning operator. Through appropriately applying these operators sequentially, an assembly model of any desired resolution can be easily generated. Of course, the assembly can go back to the finer resolution. In this paper, the data structures and the processes to realize these operators are described and a prototype modeling system with these operators is also demonstrated.
