Efficacy and tolerability of the ketogenic diet versus high-dose adrenocorticotropic hormone for infantile spasms: A single-center parallel-cohort randomized controlled trial.
Anastasia Dressler,Franz Benninger,Petra Trimmel-Schwahofer,Gudrun Gröppel,Barbara Porsche,Klaus Abraham,Angelika Mühlebner,Sharon Samueli,Christoph Male,Martha Feucht +9 more
TL;DR: To compare the efficacy and safety of the ketogenic diet (KD) with standard adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment in infants with West syndrome, a comparison study is conducted.

TL;DR: No differences in responder rates or in efficacy were observed between the KD and ACTH, however, compliance was better in the KD group and no severe side effects were observed.

In response: The equivalence of the ketogenic diet and adrenocorticotropic hormone for treatment of infantile spasms: More suggestion than conclusion.
Anastasia Dressler,Franz Benninger,Petra Trimmel-Schwahofer,Gudrun Gröppel,Barbara Porsche,Klaus Abraham,Angelika Mühlebner,Sharon Samueli,Christoph Male,Martha Feucht +9 more
TL;DR: The first randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy and tolerability of the ketogenic diet and adrenocorticotropic hormone in the treatment of West syndrome is performed, providing important new evidence.
Response to “Is ACTH therapy loaded with severe side‐effects? Do not use synthetic ACTH with the same dosages as ‘natural’ ACTH”
Martha Feucht,Anastasia Dressler,Franz Benninger,Petra Trimmel-Schwahofer,Gudrun Gröppel,Barbara Porsche,Klaus Abraham,Angelika Mühlebner,Sharon Samueli,Christoph Male +9 more
TL;DR: This study used ACTH as comparator to evaluate the ketogenic diet (KD) and found long‐term electroclinical remission was better with high‐dose ACTH and relapses occurred less often, whereas Cushing syndrome and infections occurred less frequently.
