Bi selectively doped SrTiO3-x nanosheets enhance photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light

Dyes are considered as recalcitrant compounds and are not easily removed through conventional water treatment processes. The present study demonstrated the fabrication of polyaniline hollow microsphere (PNHM)/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites by in situ deposition of MnO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of PNHM. The physicochemical characteristics and adsorption behavior of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites towards the removal of toxic methyl green (MG) and Congo red (CR) dyes have been investigated. The characterization study revealed the successful synthesis of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 adsorbent with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 191.79 m2/g. The batch adsorption study showed about 88 and 98% adsorption efficiencies for MG and CR dyes, respectively, at an optimum dose of 1 g/L of PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 at pH ∼6.75 at room temperature (303 ± 3 K). The adsorption phenomena of MG and CR dyes were well described by the Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetics, respectively, and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamics study shows that the adsorption reactions were endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) for MG and CR dyes was observed as 1142.13 and 599.49 mg/g, respectively. The responsible adsorption mechanisms involved in dye removal were electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and the formation of the covalent bonds. The coexisting ion study revealed that the presence of phosphate co-ion considerably reduced the CR dye removal efficiency. However, the desorption-regeneration study demonstrated the successful reuse of the spent PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 material for the adsorption of MG and CR dyes for several cycles. Given the aforementioned findings, the PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites could be considered as a promising adsorbent for the remediation of dye-contaminated water.

This study presents a comprehensive investigation on the synthesis and characterization of surfactant-assisted graphene oxide non-covalent functionalized silver nanocomposites (rGS-AgNPs) for achieving remarkable photocatalytic and anti-biofilm properties. The approach involves using an anionic surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)), silver nitrate (AgNO3), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as stabilizing/reducing agents, metal precursors, and supporting materials, respectively. Different composites were prepared by varying the concentration of AgNO3, resulting in rGS-AgNPs composites with concentrations of 0.9 × 10−3 mM, 1.8 × 10−3 mM, and 2.7 × 10−3 mM. Characterization techniques including XRD, FTIR, SEM, and TEM/EDS analysis confirmed the formation of face-centered cubic AgNPs and amorphous rGO structures. The composites exhibited a firm binding of the surfactant and AgNPs on the surface of rGO nanosheets, resulting in efficient anti-biofilm and photocatalytic activity. The size of the supported AgNPs on rGO/SL was found to be 8–10 nm. The rGS-AgNPs composites displayed significantly improved anti-biofilm and photocatalytic performance, attributed to the increased surface area of AgNPs. Moreover, the photocatalytic efficiency of the rGS-AgNPs composites reached 96.48 % within 60 min, outperforming pure AgNPs. The synthetic producre and practical applications will be utilized for biosensors, food packing technology, biomedical and pharmaceutically valuable reactions. 

Non-covalent functionalization of surfactant-assisted graphene oxide with silver nanocomposites for highly efficient photocatalysis and anti-biofilm applications

We present the design and synthesis of a new covalent triazine framework with high content of N atoms bearing triazine and phenanthroline moieties. This material displays interesting luminescence phenomena and enhanced photoredox activity as a consequence of synergistic combination of both N-containing aromatic fragments. As catalytic application, the reduction of a variety of brominated and challenging chlorinated aromatic structures, including persistent organic pollutants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers, has been performed under light irradiation and room temperature conditions. These chemical transformations follow a photoredox mechanism involving the formation of aryl radicals, that were trapped with different radical acceptors in order to afford the formation of new C-C, C-B and C-P bonds. 

Synergistic Combination of Triazine and Phenanthroline Moieties in a Covalent Triazine Framework Tailored for Heterogeneous Photocatalytic Metal-Free C-Br and C-Cl Activation

The encapsulation of an organic dye, 10-phenylphenothiazine (PTH), in the inner cavity of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as a breaking heterogenization strategy is presented. The PTH@oSWNT material was microscopically and spectroscopically characterized, showing intense photoemission when illuminated with visible light at the nanoscale. Thus, PTH@oSWNT was employed as a heterogeneous photocatalyst in single electron transfer dehalogenation reactions under visible light irradiation. The material showed an enhanced photocatalytic activity, achieving turnover numbers as high as 3200, with complete recyclability and stability for more than eight cycles. Computational calculations confirm that electronic communication between both partners is established because, upon illumination, an electron of the excited PTH is transferred from the π system of the molecule to the delocalized π-cloud of the SWNT, thus justifying the enhanced photocatalytic activity.
