: Seoul Fashion Week aims to be the world’s fifth Fashion Week from the year after 2000. This has involvedsignificant labour and investment, not all of which has been successful. This study analyses the strengths and weaknessesof SFW based on the London Fashion Week as a successful model. By identifying its obvious and less obvious char-acteristics, this analysis aims to diagnose SFW’s current status in order to upgrade the event at an international level.Key factors are organisational body, designers, visitors, sponsors, schedule, venue, main events and supportive events.The following points have emerged from the research: the success of Seoul Fashion Week was based on the combinationof separate collections, an appropriate fashion show venue, and the active role of new designers. The problems were: lackof an independent organisation, non-professional staff, lack of diverse visitors, exclusive governmental funding, late tim-ing, excessive distance from the main European and American fashion markets, lack of sustainability of the main events,a limited variety of supportive events, the absence of online promotion and, last but not least, no distinctive features. Thestudy concludes that Seoul Fashion Week has great potential with its fast growth and young designers. This should becomplemented with an independent organisation and effective administration and strategy.Key words : Seoul Fashion Week, organisation, buyers, governmental sponsorship, online promotion

Fashioning Seoul: Everyday Practices of Dress in the Korean Wave

Since several years ago, Seoul Fashion Week has been positioned to be recognized as one of the world’s five greatest Fashion Weeks. Though it is true that Seoul Fashion Week has been showing noticeable growth for the last twenty or so years, it is still evaluated to be somewhat insufficient in its qualitative growth. It still exhibits some radical problems resulting from its transitional status and so cannot yet be considered as an international Fashion Week. Therefore, this study aims to examine how to improve Seoul Fashion Week by analyzing its current status and providing mid- and long-term development methods for it to grow qualitatively to be an international Fashion Week. According to the results of this study, Seoul Fashion Week, currently in a transitional state, can realize qualitative growth and mid- and long-term development through the following: first, supporting and sponsoring organizations should be distinguished, and the planning of the events should be freed from governmental initiatives and be independent; second, through a precise SWOT analysis on fashion in Korea, Seoul Fashion Week should reorganize its own original planning and concept; third, it should diversify its channels of publicity and conduct specialized and constant marketing plans; lastly, support of the overseas market should be systemized by centering around the practical affairs of trading, and professional manpower, who can provide more practical support, should be cultivated. If the aims mentioned above can be fulfilled, it is expected that Seoul Fashion Week will establish its identity as its own collection and secure further competitiveness in the global market so that it can exploit a new market to grow as one of the world’s five greatest Fashion Weeks, not simply have the image as Asia’s top Fashion Week.

Analysis on the Current Status of Seoul Fashion Week and Study on the Methods of its Mid- and Long-Term Development

The Muslim markets are emerging. Though they are geographically isolated, the Muslim’s religious homogeneity has formed a huge market. Economic power based on abundant resources, a high population growth rate, and robust consumption propensities are the main advantages of the Muslim market. Surprisingly, Muslims are one of the top consumer groups of luxurious cars, homes and fashion items despite their ascetical, conservative image. Until now, the entry of foreign companies into the Muslim market has been difficult due to the market’s unique qualities; however, the opportunity of preemption in the market is worth attempting. Thus, the purpose of the following study is to understand the differentiated culture and the industrial backgrounds of the Muslim nations and to perform a design research based on the traditional Muslim abaya. As a result, Dubai (the business hub of the Middle East and the capital city of the UAE) was labeled as a niche market, and six various designs of exportable Couture Abaya (high-quality custom-made abaya) were developed for Muslim women aged 28 to 40. After setting Dubai as the starting point, about 1.6 billion markets around the world, including the UAE markets, were targeted as contributing to the increase in the national competitiveness caused by the realization of high-value products.

The multiculturalism in British contemporary arts, the public popularization of arts, and the harmony between traditional and modern arts are reflected well in the collections of the British-representative fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. With this research, the direction of future fashion styles could be anticipated examining the current cultural situations.

Under the paradigm of ‘Eco’, the core of sustainability management, this study aims to establish both domestic and international markets and secure competitiveness in the global markets through the development of children’s furniture composed of recycled and unharmful materials. Currently, in Europe and in the Western regions, the concepts of ‘eco-friendly’, ‘children’, and ‘DIY’ are well-placed in the daily lives of the people. On the other hand, compared to the domestic demand for eco-friendly children’s furniture, the essential approach and the qualitative improvements about the subject are being slowly progressed. Particularly, the process of applying eco-friendly materials and finishing materials to the children’s furnitures are mostly in a non-existent state. Thus, in this study, simple application of basic eco-friendly materials such as natural woods or imitation of overseas furniture designs were avoided to create transformable eco-friendly one-touch DIY children’s furniture for children’s growth and development through the application of eco-friendly processes of technology, design, and other stages of the development process. In other words, under the big category of eco-friendly children’s furniture, the furniture was developed through an environmentally-friendly process of universal design that is suitable for children of all ages, and thus, ultimately maximizing the economical effective value and reducing consumption of resources and environmental pollutions.
