This study is focused on the development, implementation and evaluation of an environmental education programme for secondary education students. The programme was entitled ‘Τhe effects of fire on the soil system’ and it was implemented during the school period of 2008. Twenty-four (24) students (aged from 15 to 20) coming from Lidoriki Secondary School (Central Greece) participated in the programme, which was based on Project Method. The programme consisted of one theoretical part (achievement of cognitive and affective goals) and one experimental part (achievement of cognitive and psychomotor goals). Initial, formative and summative assessments were implemented during the course of the programme, by means of questionnaires, observation of students’ teamwork and examination of their work sheets. In this paper we will deal with the inequalities in the field of education and the way they affect the democratic society. This is a very important issue, especially in our time, because the problem is becoming more intense due to the accelerated economic competition, globalization and the changes taking place in the social fabric of the state’s due to the migration of large parts of the population worldwide. In modern Democracy (Agamben, 2005) there is a strong criticism, which basically focuses on the fact that the modern state of Representative Democracy does not realize the goals set by the revolutions of the 19th century and his proclamations of equality and liberty. In today’s societies, education is an important parameter in the formation of the citizen, who will then play an active role in the creation of a democratic society, which will be governed by democratic principles and values. Although all citizens and stakeholders recognize the requirement for a democratic education, its realization remains a question. Within this context, the question arises whether and under what conditions today’s students can be the emancipated and critical citizens of the future society.

The Economic Dimension of Education, Educational Inequalities and Their Role in Shaping the Democratic Citizen

The subject matter of this essay concerns the use of manipulatives and teaching aids in the teaching of mathematics for the 1st and 2nd grade of primary school, combined with educational robotics applications. In particular, the use of the programmable bee-bot floor robot combines procedures that involve the use of manipulative means (creating a track as a cardboard model, painting, assembling), teaching aid tools (demonstration of the programmable bee-bot floor robot), and finally, the comprehension of simple programming and mathematical concepts. Through the implementation of an educational scenario aiming to familiarize students with the basic geometric concepts, mathematical operations (multiplication table), basic algorithmic structures (simple problems and step solving), there will be involvement with the cognitive areas of informatics (basic programming concepts)) and mathematics (geometry, calculations).

Teaching Aids and Manipulative Teaching Means: Educational Robotics and Mathematics Using the Planned Bee-Bot Floor Robot

The aim of this paper is to present a method that uses computational intelligence techniques to classify students according to the principles of differentiated instruction. A clustering algorithm based on particle swarm optimization is applied to two sets of data emerging from the holistic assessment of the student's particular characteristics and needs. The results illustrate the algorithm's contribution to the effective formation of heterogeneous student groups, with the members of each having homogeneous characteristics of skills, difficulties, psychosocial and cognitive profiles. Thus, the teacher can easily manage students, by knowing the characteristics of each group. A comparison with a genetic algorithm as well as cuckoo search algorithm shows that the proposed method provides improved categorization capabilities.
