Mango maturity classification instead of maturity index estimation: A new approach towards handheld NIR spectroscopy

Influence of macro-perforated polyethylene terephthalate and low-density polyethylene packaging films on quality and storability of strawberries

Strawberry fruits are highly perishable and susceptible to microbial decay. In this study, influence of atmospheric pressure, postharvest delay in hypobaric treatment, and combined effect of pressure and exposure duration on storage quality of strawberries were evaluated. Treatment at 40 kPa for 4 h without postharvest delay inhibited fungal decay and retained visual quality which contributed to 13% increase in marketable life of strawberries compared with control. Further study revealed that microbial control and storage quality of strawberries treated either at 20 kPa for 2 h or 40 kPa for 4 h were statistically comparable. After 12 days, strawberries treated at 20 kPa for 2 h had 14.3% higher radical scavenging activity, 13.9% higher phenolic contents and 17.7% higher ascorbic acid than control fruits. Thus, pre-storage treatment at 20 kPa for 2 h without postharvest delay effectively retained fruit quality and extended storage life of strawberries for 6 more days compared with control. Novelty impact statement Hypobaric treatment is a potential non-chemical technique used to disinfect and extend storage life of strawberries. Results showed that hypobaric treatment at 20 kPa for 2 h without any postharvest delay can be adopted to disinfect strawberries from microbial infection and to extend marketable life. These findings may help in developing commercial hypobaric technology for perishable and decay-susceptible fruits and vegetables.

 Hypobaric Treatment Reduces Microbial Spoilage and Maintains Eating Quality of Strawberry Fruits during Low Temperature Conditions

Pakistan is one of the major mango-producing and -exporting countries in the world. During 2007-15, significant postharvest research and development (R&D) work was conducted under the Australian-funded ASLP mango supply chain management/value chain improvement projects (two phases). The project started by laying a postharvest foundation R&D infrastructure in 2007. Fruit quality losses in supply chains were documented. Protocols were developed for maturity testing, de-sapping, storage/sea-freighting, and ripening and postharvest disease management of major mango cultivars. Quantity loss (unmarketable fruit) was around 20% while quality loss (affecting price) was 65 and 70% in Sindhri and Samar Bahisht Chaunsa mango, respectively. Sap burn and postharvest diseases were the most important fruit quality issues at retail. Cultivars differed in terms of fruit harvest maturity indicators, postharvest treatment response, controlled atmosphere conditions and temperatures for storage and ripening. Besides physical de-sapping (on racks), lime wash (de-stemming and dipping fruit in 0.5% lime solution for 2-3 min) was also found to be effective, with morning being the best time for fruit picking. Significant relationships of production locality, orchard management, nutrition (Ca, B and K) and pre-cooling were found with postharvest disease incidence. Postharvest hot-water fungicidal dip of Scholar (active ingredient (a.i.) fludioxonil), Amistar (a.i. azoxystrobin) and Sportak (a.i. procholaz) gave significant fruit disease control. An integrated approach of good production practices, right maturity, correct postharvest fungicidal treatments and pre-cooling was an effective strategy for reducing disease incidence and maintaining better shelf-life at retail. On the basis of R&D and interventions, significant improvement was brought to the local mango industry and export. Sindhri mangoes were sea-freighted commercially to the EU and UK with good fruit quality outturn and overall postharvest life of 40-45 days.

Panicle emergence and harvest dates influence the maturity and quality of mango fruit

The storage life and quality of mango fruit is significantly influenced by the stage of harvest maturity. Fruit harvest maturity indicators for the Pakistani mango cultivars have not been scientifically determined so far. Present studies were targeted to determine different fruit harvest maturity indices for two commercial mango cultivars (‘Sindhri’ and ‘Samar Bahisht (S.B.) Chaunsa’ of Pakistan. Significant inter¬action was found between panicle emergence and fruit maturation (harvest date) regarding fruit pulp dry matter contents in both cultivars. In 'S.B. Chaunsa' mangoes, significant interaction was found between panicle emergence and maturation with respect to specific gravity, TSS, shoulder position and pulp colour. Both 'Sindhri' and 'Chaunsa' mangoes were found to have light yellow pulp colour near the stone at the onset of maturity. Mature 'Sindhri' fruit had <1.0-1.02 specific gravity, 6.0-7.5°Brix TSS, 17-20% pulp dry matter and drooping to levelled shoulders. The fruit of 'S.B. Chaunsa' had 1.02-1.04 specific gravity, 9.0-11.0°Brix TSS, 18-21% pulp dry matter and levelled to raised shoulders at maturity.
