A model review is a validation technique aimed at determining if a model is of sufficient quality and allows defects to be identified early in the system development, reducing the cost of fixing them. In this paper we propose a technique to perform automatic review of Abstract State Machine (ASM) formal specifications. We first detect a family of typical vulnerabilities and defects a developer can introduce during the modeling activity using the ASMs and we express such faults as the violation of meta-properties that guarantee certain quality attributes of the specification. These meta-properties are then mapped to temporal logic formulas and model checked for their violation. As a proof of concept, we also report the result of applying this ASM review process to several specifications.

Modeling systems based on semi-formal graphical formalisms, such as Statecharts, have become standard practice in the design of reactive embedded devices. Statecharts are often more intuitively understandable than equivalent textual descriptions, and their animated simulation can help to visualize complex behaviors. However, in terms of editing speed, project management, and meta-modeling, textual descriptions have advantages.As alternative to the standard WYSIWYG editing paradigm, we present an approach that is also graphical but oriented on the underlying structure of the system under development, and another approach based on a textual, dialect-independent Statechart description language. These approaches have been implemented in a prototypical modeling tool, which encompasses automatic Statechart layout. An empirical study on the usability and practicability of our Statechart editing techniques, including a Statechart layout comparison, indicates significant performance improvements in terms of editing speed and model comprehension compared to traditional modeling approaches.

Statechart development beyond WYSIWYG

In Combinatorial Interaction Testing, models specify a set of parameters with associated domains, and some constraints over the parameters. Test generation tools produce, starting from these models, test suites for achieving some given coverage criteria. The validation of both the models and the produced test suites is a worthwhile activity. Validating the models permits to early discover possible defects in them, to feed the test generations tools with good inputs and, possibly, to improve the quality of the testing process. Validating the produced test suites, instead, permits to check if the test generation tools are correct and to judge their quality. This paper proposes to validate the models by checking that the constraints are consistent, that there is no constraint implied by the other constraints, and that the parameters and their values are really necessary. The proposed test suite validation, instead, consists in checking that the tests respect the type definitions and the constraints, that all the test requirements are covered, and that all the tests in the test suite are valid and necessary. For every error we propose a possible technique able to identify the potential causes and to suggest fixes for those problems. Experiments show that the targeted defects are widespread both in benchmark and real-life models.

Validation of Models and Tests for Constrained Combinatorial Interaction Testing

Among possible model validation techniques able to identify defects early in the system development, model review aims also at determining if a model is of sufficient quality, where quality is measured as the absence of certain faults. In this paper, we tackle the problem of automatic reviewing NuSMV formal specifications by developing a model advisor which helps to assure given model qualities for NuSMV programs. Vulnerabilities and defects a developer can introduce during the modeling activity using NuSMV are expressed as the violation of formal meta-properties. These meta-properties are then mapped to temporal logic formulas, and the NuSMV model checker itself is used as the engine of our model advisor to notify meta-properties violations, so revealing the absence of some quality attributes of the specification. As a proof of concept, we also report the result of applying this review process to several NuSMV specifications.

UML State Machines constitute an integral part of software behavior specification within the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The development of realistic software applications often results in complex and distributed models. Hence, potential errors can be very subtle and hard to locate for the developer. In this paper, we present a set of robustness rules that seek to avoid common types of errors by ruling out certain modelling constructs. Furthermore, adherence to these rules can improve model readability and maintainability. The robustness rules constitute a general Statechart style guide for different dialects, such as UML State Machines, Statemate, and Esterel Studio. Based on this style guide, an automated checking framework has been implemented as a plug-in for the prototypical Statechart modeling tool KIEL. Simple structural checks can be formulated in a compact, abstract manner in the Object Constraint Language (OCL). The framework can also incorporate checks that go beyond the expressiveness of OCL by implementing them in Java directly, which can also serve as a gateway to formal verification tools; we have exploited this to incorporate a theorem prover for more advanced checks. As a case study, we adopted the UML well-formedness rules; this confirmed that individual rules can easily be incorporated into the framework.
