The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of the structure and composition of native palm communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was carried out at “Parque Estadual da Serra Furada” (PAESF), a protected area located in southern state of Santa Catarina. A palm community survey was carried out in Dense Ombrophilous Forest in five 20 m × 100 m sampling units, totaling 1ha. All palm individuals were measured, totaling 11,183 plants, belonging to four genera and five species: Bactris setosa Mart., Euterpe edulis Mart., Geonoma gamiova Barb.Rodr., Geonoma schottiana Mart. and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman. Euterpe edulis was the most common species, contributing the most to all phytosociological parameters; however, relatively few large individuals were found. Our study demonstrates the limitations of traditional forest surveys that ignore smaller diameter palm species and highlights the importance of the role of this group in the floristic diversity, ecosystem function, environmental services and carbon dynamics.

Palm (Arecaceae) Communities in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: a Phytosociological Study

Aims Knowledge of species richness is of prime importance to both basic and applied aspects of ecological studies. However, quantifying plant species richness in the tropics is potentially time-consuming because of high species diversity. Plant species richness estimates are also frequently biased, because many rare species are not detected. to address these problems, the use of a variable area method has been proposed as an alternative to fixed area methods, but its applicability to plants with aggregated distributions has been questioned based on simulation studies. We use empirical data to compare the efficiency and accuracy of a variable area method and a fixed area method for estimating species richness, density and basal area for plants with aggregated distributions, using palms as a model taxon. Methods Adult palms were sampled in twenty 10 × 30 m transects in an Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. All individuals were considered in the fixed area method, while in the variable area method only the first six adults in each transect were sampled; in this case, transect length was defined according to the distance of the sixth adult from the beginning of the transect. When fewer than six individuals were observed in a given transect, transect length was extended up to 50 m to search for additional individuals. the efficiency of both methods was compared based on species rarefaction curves, using the chao 1 statistic (for abundance data). For each species we calculated mean density per transect and basal area, according to each sampling method. Sampling effort in terms of the number of individual plants and the area necessary to characterize maximum species richness in each sampling method, as well as mean time taken to sample a single transect, were compared as measures of efficiency. Important findings An accurate estimate of species richness was achieved using both methods, but in the variable area method, a quarter of the number of individuals and half the area was sufficient to characterize maximum species richness. Density and basal area did not differ between methods for any of the species studied. In the fixed area method sampling effort was 90 min per transect, whereas in the variable area method it was 30 min per transect. the variable area method, with its faster assessment of palm species richness, should facilitate greater spatial representativeness by making it easier to sample a larger number of plots at different spatial scales. We thus find sufficient evidence to recommend the variable area method for rapid and robust evaluations of species richness for palms with aggregate distributions, as well as for other plants with similar spatial patterns, in tropical forests.

Species richness and density evaluation for plants with aggregated distributions: fixed vs. variable area methods

The Syagrus oleracea is adapted for dry regions, has used for food, ornamental palm and development of cosmetic. It occurs in impacted areas of Cerrado. The management of the species is important for traditional communities. Morphological descriptors, biometric pyrenes and spatial distribution of individuals are important for the species distinction, conservation, forest management and implantation of breeding programs. Thus, our objectives were to determine and correlate the main morphological characters of the palm tree, to evaluate the biometric of the pyrenes and the spatial distribution of the species. Neighbourhood Density Function (NDF) evaluated the spatial distribution in georeferenced individuals in four populations (Mirabela, Mato Verde, Rio Pardo de Minas and Novorizonte). The Novorizonte population showed an aggregate pattern in the first distance classes. The other populations had a random pattern. We evaluated 13 morphological descriptors in six populations (Mirabela, Mato Verde, Rio Pardo de Minas, Novorizonte, Varzelandia and Sao Joao da Ponte). The cluster analysis corroborates the results obtained by the multivariate analysis, which shows a greater distance of the SJP3 and SJP5 samples from the other accessions. The evaluated characteristics of the pyrenes biometry were: longitudinal diameter, equatorial diameter and the mass of the pyrenes. The highest mean longitudinal (22.17 mm) and equatorial diameter (38.89 mm) in addition to the mean mass (9.29 g) were observed in the Novorizonte population. The fruits of S. oleracea present an elongated shape. The study generated important information about the species that is still little studied, and has economic potential for product development.

Spatial Distribution, Morphological Descriptors and Seed Biometry of Syagrus oleracea (Mart.) Becc. (Arecaceae): An Important Brazilian Cerrado Palm

The selection of forest fragments for conservation is usually based on spatial parameters as forest size and canopy integrity. This strategy assumes that chosen fragments present high conservation status, ensuring biodiversity and ecological functions. We argue that a well-preserved forest fragment that remains connected by the landscape structure, does not necessarily hold attributes that ensure the presence of keystone species. We also discuss that the presence of keystone species does not always mean that it has the best conditions for its occurrence and maintenance. We developed a model to select areas in forest landscapes to be prioritized for protection based on suitability curves that unify and compare spatial indicators of three categories: forest fragment quality, landscape quality, and environmental conditions for the occurrence of a keystone species. We use a case study to compare different suitability degrees for Euterpe edulis presence, considered an important functional element in Atlantic Forest (Sao Paulo, Brazil) landscapes and a forest resource for local people. The results show that the identification of medium or advanced stage fragments as singular indicator of forest quality does not guarantee the existence or maintenance of this keystone species. Even in some well-preserved forest fragments, connected to others and with palm presence, the reverse J-shaped distribution of the population size structure is not sustained and these forests continue to be threatened due to human disturbances.

Keystone Species, Forest and Landscape: A Model to Select Protected Areas

Attalea speciosa (babassu) is a native palm of the primary forest from Amazonian and Cerrado biomes, and has multiple economic and cultural uses. However, this palm can become dominant in open areas, with a long-term persistence in the community. The objective of this study was to compare the population structure and morphology of babassu in three habitat types characterizing forest succession: primary forest, pasture, and babaçual (babassu-dominated secondary forest). For this purpose, we monitored 6,333 individuals for three years at six life stages in 11 sites with 25 plots located in PA-Benfica, Itupiranga-Pará, Brazil. The morphological parameters showed differences between secondary environments (pasture and babaçual) and primary forests, suggesting that this species has a high capacity for phenotypic plasticity. The inverse J-shaped distribution was observed only in primary forests, with the density of all stages constant along the whole study, unlike pastures and babaçual areas. While the density of seedlings is highest in primary forests, stage 4 and 5 juveniles and adults are most numerous in babaçuals. Our results suggest that the higher dominance of A. speciosa in babaçual areas can be associated with the resilience of this species to anthropogenic disturbances.

A estrutura ontogenetica e espacial de dez especies de palmeiras que ocorrem na Serra do Mar, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, foi analisada nas fitofisionomias: Floresta Ombrofila Densa de Terras Baixas, Submontana e Montana. Em 12 parcelas de um hectare (quatro parcelas em cada fitofisionomia) foram instaladas tres transeccoes de 10 × 100 m, subdivididas em subparcelas de 10 × 10 m, totalizando 0,3 hectares inventariados em cada parcela. Foram procedidas identificacao e biometria completa de todas as palmeiras, e a distribuicao espa- cial das populacoes foi analisada por meio do Indice de agregacao (Ia) proposto por Perry. Com a elevacao, foram observadas alteracoes na riqueza e abundância das especies, com predominância de plântulas em Astrocaryum aculeatissimum, Euterpe edulis, Geonoma gamiova, Geonoma pohliana e Syagrus pseudoco- cos . Individuos jovens apresentaram maior frequencia em Attalea dubia, Bactris hatschbachii e Geonoma schottiana . Geonoma elegans apresentou mais adultos e Bactris setosa , frequencias similares de plântulas e jovens. A maioria dos estadios ontogeneticos nao foi correlacionada com a altitude e o padrao agregado foi predominante nas especies de palmeiras. Dessa forma, concluiu-se que a altitude nao influenciou no padrao de distribuicao espacial das populacoes de palmeiras, mas afetou a composicao dessa comunidade na Floresta Ombrofila Densa na Serra do Mar. Structure and spatial distribution of palm populations at different altitudes in Serra do Mar, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil Abstract The ontogenetic and spatial structure of ten palm species that occur in the Serra do Mar, Ubatuba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed for three vegetation physiognomies dense rain forest of lowland, lower montane and montane regions. At twelve 1-ha plots (four plots in each vegetation physiognomy) three transects, 10 × 100m each, divided into subplots of 10 ×10m, and 0.3 hectare in each plot was surveyed. All palms were identified and the biometrics of all palm species determined. Spatial distribution of populations was analyzed using the aggregation index (Ia) proposed by Perry. Changes in species richness and abundance were observed associated with elevation. Seedlings predominated in Astrocaryum aculeatissimum , Euterpe edulis , Geonoma gamiova , Geonoma pohliana and Syagrus pseudococos ; juveniles had higher frequency in Attalea dubia , Bactris hatschbachii and Geonoma schottiana ; Geonoma elegans had more adults and Bactris setosa had similar frequencies of seedlings and saplings. Most of the ontogenetic stages were not correlated with altitude and the aggregate pattern was predominant in palm species. Therefore, it was concluded that altitude did not influence the spatial distribution pattern of palm populations, but it affected the composition of the community in the dense rain forest in the Serra do Mar.
