People's exposure to green space is a critical link between urban green space and urban residents' health. Since green space may affect human health through multiple pathways regarding diverse human health outcomes, the measurement of people's exposure to green space must be tailored to concrete study contexts and research questions. In this scoping review, we systematically categorized the available green space representations and metrics in the last two decades that can be used to derive people's exposure to green space regarding different research topics. A three-phase systematic review was conducted after a generalized search of relevant research articles from the three most-used publication databases, namely Scopus, the Web of Science, and PubMed. We identified 260 research articles that particularly discuss green space representations and metrics. We further developed a multi-pathway framework to articulate the complicated context issues in green space studies. We categorized the most relevant green space representations and metrics into five groups, including green space indices, the delineation, inventory, and usage of green space, the spatiotemporal evolution of green space, the attributes and components of green space, and the green space landscape and fragmentation. Finally, we discussed the inter-conversion between different green space representations and metrics, the “mobility-turn” in green space studies and how it may affect the derivation of people's exposure to green space, and other potential methodological issues in measuring people's exposure to green space. Our scoping review provides the most comprehensive framework and categories for deriving people's exposure to green space to date, which may strongly support a broad range of studies that concern green space's health effects. 

Current methods for evaluating People's exposure to green space: A scoping review

Temporal contexts are essential for the derivation of causally relevant environmental exposure in environmental and public health studies. We argue that the proper temporal contexts need further emphasis in the mobility-oriented research paradigm and articulate this issue using a study in Hong Kong. We use people’s exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) and green space as two essential examples. We recruited 208 participants from two representative communities in Hong Kong and derived their mobility-oriented environmental exposures from high-resolution remote sensing data and Google Street View imagery. We employed one-standard-deviational ellipses to quantitatively represent participants’ activity spaces, and we further used participants’ seven-day Global Positioning System trajectories to derive their spatiotemporally weighted exposures to green space and outdoor ALAN in different temporal contexts. Multiple t tests were used to examine the disparities in activity spaces and measured exposures in different temporal contexts, and these exposure measurements were then used to predict people’s health outcomes. We found that people’s activity spaces are significantly different in size between day and night, for both weekdays and weekends, and in both geographic contexts. We further observed that improper temporal contexts could lead to significantly different environmental exposure levels and causally irrelevant modeling results.

How Mobility and Temporal Contexts May Affect Environmental Exposure Measurements: Using Outdoor Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) and Urban Green Space as Examples

Excessive urbanization leads to considerable nature deficiency and abundant artificial infrastructure in urban areas, which triggered intensive discussions on people's exposure to green space and outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN). Recent academic progress highlights that people's exposure to green space and outdoor ALAN may be confounders of each other but lacks systematic investigations. This study investigates the associations between people's exposure to green space and outdoor ALAN by adopting the three most used research paradigms: population-level residence-based, individual-level residence-based, and individual-level mobility-oriented paradigms. We employed the green space and outdoor ALAN data of 291 tertiary planning units in Hong Kong for population-level analysis. We also used data from 940 participants in six representative communities for individual-level analyses. Hong Kong green space and outdoor ALAN were derived from high-resolution remote sensing data. The total exposures were derived using the spatiotemporal weighted approaches. Our results confirm that the negative associations between people's exposure to green space and outdoor ALAN are universal across different research paradigms, spatially non-stationary, and consistent among different socio-demographic groups. We also observed that mobility-oriented measures may lead to stronger negative associations than residence-based measures by mitigating the contextual errors of residence-based measures. Our results highlight the potential confounding associations between people's exposure to green space and outdoor ALAN, and we strongly recommend relevant studies to consider both of them in modeling people's health outcomes, especially for those health outcomes impacted by the co-exposure to them. 

Confounding Associations Between Green Space and Outdoor Artificial Light at Night: Systematic Investigations and Implications for Urban Health

Advanced nighttime light (NTL) remote sensing techniques enable the large-scope epidemiological investigations of people’s exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) and its health effects. However, multiple uncertainties remain in the measurements of people’s exposure to outdoor ALAN, including the representations of outdoor ALAN, the contextual settings of exposure measurements, and measurement approaches. Non-exposed but included outdoor ALAN and causally irrelevant outdoor ALAN may manifest as contextual errors, and these uncertain contextual errors may lead to biased measurements and erroneous interpretations when modeling people’s health outcomes. In this study, we systematically investigated outdoor ALAN exposure measurements in different geographic contexts using either residence-based or mobility-oriented measurements, different spatial scales, and multiple NTL data sources. Based on the GPS data collected from 208 participants in Hong Kong, outdoor ALAN exposures were measured from NTL imagery at 10 m, 130 m, and 500 m spatial resolutions using in-situ methods or 100 m, 300 m, and 500 m buffer zone averaging. Descriptive analysis, multiple t-tests, and logistic regression were employed to examine the differences between outdoor ALAN exposure measurements using various contextual settings and their effects on modeling people’s overall health. Our results confirmed that different contextual settings may lead to significantly different outdoor ALAN exposure measurements. Our results also confirmed that contextual errors may lead to erroneous conclusions when using improper contextual settings to model people’s overall health. Consequentially, we suggest measuring people’s exposure to outdoor ALAN using the mobility-oriented approach, NTL representation with the high spatial resolution, and a very small buffer zone as a contextual unit to derive outdoor ALAN exposure. This study articulates essential methodological issues induced by uncertainties in outdoor ALAN exposure measurements and can provide essential implications and suggestions for a broad scope of studies that need accurate outdoor ALAN exposure measurements.

Mobility-oriented measurements of people’s exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) and the uncertain geographic context problem (UGCoP)

Light pollution has detrimental impacts on wildlife, human health, and ecosystem functions and services. This paper explores the impact of light pollution on the value of ecosystem services. We use the Simplified All-Sky Light Pollution Ratio (sALR) as a proxy for the negative impact of light pollution and the Copernicus PROBA-V Global Landcover Database as our proxy of ecosystem service value based on previously published ecosystem service values associated with a variety of landcovers. We use the sALR value to ‘degrade’ the value of ecosystem services. This results in a 40% reduction in ecosystem service value in those areas of the world with maximum levels of light pollution. Using this methodology, the estimate of the annual loss of ecosystem service value due to light pollution is USD 3.4 trillion. This represents roughly 3% of the total global value of ecosystem services and 3% of the global GDP, estimated at roughly USD 100 trillion in 2022. A summary of how these losses are distributed amongst the world’s countries and landcovers is also presented. 

The Ecological Economics of Light Pollution: Impacts on Ecosystem Service Value

The effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on human health have drawn increased attention in the last two decades. Numerous studies have discussed the effects of ALAN on human health on diverse topics. A broader scope of how ALAN may affect human health is thus urgently needed. This paper depicts a systematic evidence map in a multi-component framework to link ALAN with human health through a comprehensive literature review of English research articles in the past two decades. A three-phase systematic review was conducted after a generalized search of relevant articles from three publication databases, namely Scopus, the Web of Science, and PubMed. In total, 552 research articles were found in four categories and on numerous topics within our framework. We cataloged the evidence that shows direct and indirect as well as positive and negative effects of ALAN on human physical and mental health. We also summarized the studies that consider ALAN as a social determinant of human health. Based on our framework and the systematic evidence map, we also suggest several promising directions for future studies, including method design, co-exposure and exposome studies, and social and environmental justice.
