A Review on Deep-Learning Algorithms for Fetal Ultrasound-Image Analysis

Diagnostic support tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) have exhibited high performance in various medical fields. However, their clinical application remains challenging because of the lack of explanatory power in AI decisions (black box problem), making it difficult to build trust with medical professionals. Nevertheless, visualizing the internal representation of deep neural networks will increase explanatory power and improve the confidence of medical professionals in AI decisions. We propose a novel deep learning-based explainable representation “graph chart diagram” to support fetal cardiac ultrasound screening, which has low detection rates of congenital heart diseases due to the difficulty in mastering the technique. Screening performance improves using this representation from 0.966 to 0.975 for experts, 0.829 to 0.890 for fellows, and 0.616 to 0.748 for residents in the arithmetic mean of area under the curve of a receiver operating characteristic curve. This is the first demonstration wherein examiners used deep learning-based explainable representation to improve the performance of fetal cardiac ultrasound screening, highlighting the potential of explainable AI to augment examiner capabilities.

A review of image processing methods for fetal head and brain analysis in ultrasound images

Ultrasound (US) is a flexible imaging modality used globally as a first-line medical exam procedure in many different clinical cases. It benefits from the continued evolution of ultrasonic technologies and a well-established US-based digital health system. Nevertheless, its diagnostic performance still presents challenges due to the inherent characteristics of US imaging, such as manual operation and significant operator dependence. Artificial intelligence (AI) has proven to recognize complicated scan patterns and provide quantitative assessments for imaging data. Therefore, AI technology has the potential to help physicians get more accurate and repeatable outcomes in the US. In this article, we review the recent advances in AI-assisted US scanning. We have identified the main areas where AI is being used to facilitate US scanning, such as standard plane recognition and organ identification, the extraction of standard clinical planes from 3D US volumes, and the scanning guidance of US acquisitions performed by humans or robots. In general, the lack of standardization and reference datasets in this field makes it difficult to perform comparative studies among the different proposed methods. More open-access repositories of large US datasets with detailed information about the acquisition are needed to facilitate the development of this very active research field, which is expected to have a very positive impact on US imaging.

Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Ultrasound Scanning

In programming courses, providing students with concise and constructive feedback on faulty submissions (programs) is highly desirable. However, providing feedback manually is often time-consuming and tedious. To release tutors from the manual construction of concise feedback, researchers have proposed approaches such as CLARA and Refactory to construct feedback automatically. The key to such approaches is to fix a faulty program by making it equivalent to one of its correct reference programs whose overall structure is identical to that of the faulty submission. However, for a newly released assignment, it is likely that there are no correct reference programs at all, let alone correct reference programs sharing identical structure with the faulty submission. Therefore, in this paper, we propose AssignmentMender generating concise patches for newly released assignments. The key insight of AssignmentMender is that a faulty submission can be repaired by reusing fine-grained code snippets from submissions (even when they are faulty) for the same assignment. It automatically locates suspicious code in the faulty program and leverages static analysis to retrieve reference code from existing submissions with a graph-based matching algorithm. Finally, it generates candidate patches by modifying the suspicious code based on the reference code. Different from existing approaches, AssignmentMender exploits faulty submissions in addition to bug-free submissions to generate patches. Another advantage of AssignmentMender is that it can leverage submissions whose overall structures are different from those of the to-be-fixed submission. Evaluation results on 128 faulty submissions from 10 assignments show that AssignmentMender improves the state-of-the-art in feedback generation for newly released assignments. A case study involving 40 students and 80 submissions further provides initial evidence showing that the proposed approach is useful in practice.

Generating Concise Patches for Newly Released Programming Assignments

Abstract The quality control of fetal sonographic (FS) images is essential for the correct biometric measurements and fetal anomaly diagnosis. However, quality control requires professional sonographers to perform and is often labor-intensive. To solve this problem, we propose an automatic image quality assessment scheme based on multitask learning to assist in FS image quality control. An essential criterion for FS image quality control is that all the essential anatomical structures in the section should appear full and remarkable with a clear boundary. Therefore, our scheme aims to identify those essential anatomical structures to judge whether an FS image is the standard image, which is achieved by 3 convolutional neural networks. The Feature Extraction Network aims to extract deep level features of FS images. Based on the extracted features, the Class Prediction Network determines whether the structure meets the standard and Region Proposal Network identifies its position. The scheme has been applied to 3 types of fetal sections, which are the head, abdominal, and heart. The experimental results show that our method can make a quality assessment of an FS image within less a second. Also, our method achieves competitive performance in both the segmentation and diagnosis compared with state-of-the-art methods.
