In the fifth century, Motya developed into a strongly-walled town, half of whose population was Greek and which conducted flourishing commerce with Elymians and Greeks. It became one of the key points of Carthaginian control over the narrow passage between Africa and Sicily, and the main naval base for Carthaginians in their wars against the Sicilians. The striking prosperity of sixth-century Selinus and Acragas speaks eloquently against the assumption that Malchus' 'long wars' in Sicily were waged against the Greeks. For this reason it has been very plausibly argued that his enemy may in fact have been Punics from Motya and elsewhere who tried to resist their mother-city's attempts to dominate them. Some frontier clashes between pro-Punic Selinus and the Acragantines may have served as a pretext for Gelon's propaganda. There is no better evidence of the vitality of Sicilian civilization in the first quarter of the fifth century than the swift rise of Acragas and Syracuse.

Carthaginians and Greeks

Rodney S. Young directed excavations for the Museum at the site of Gordion on the central plateau in Anatolia (modern Turkey) in alternate years from 1950 to 1973. Traces of occupation as early as the Early Bronze Age have been identified, but Gordion flourished in the time of the historic King Midas, toward the end of the eighth century B.C. The three huge tumuli-covered wooden burial chambers detailed here contained a wealth of bronze vessels, fine wooden furniture, and pottery. University Museum Monograph, 43

Principal results of the Gordion excavations of 1969–1973 and the research that followed include: 1) isolation of a considerable body of post-Hittite pottery fragments related to the \"Handmade and Burnished Ware\" whose presence in late Mycenaean contexts has recently drawn much attention; 2) broader knowledge of the architecture of the Early Phrygian citadel at phases well before the great destruction of the early seventh century B.C.; 3) discovery of a grand stairway at the Destruction Level; 4) vivid evidence for life in the working quarter of that level; 5) a more secure chronology for the rebuilt citadel of the Middle Phrygian period; 6) illumination on the uses of the buildings there; 7) information showing extensive rebuilding early in the Hellenistic period; and 8) evidence bearing on the question of whether or not Gordion became a Galatian settlement in the third century B.C.
