Many of the links of religiousness with health, well-being, and social behavior may be due to religion's influences on self-control or self-regulation. Using Carver and Scheier's (1998) theory of self-regulation as a framework for organizing the empirical research, the authors review evidence relevant to 6 propositions: (a) that religion can promote self-control; (b) that religion influences how goals are selected, pursued, and organized; (c) that religion facilitates self-monitoring; (d) that religion fosters the development of self-regulatory strength; (e) that religion prescribes and fosters proficiency in a suite of self-regulatory behaviors; and (f) that some of religion's influences on health, well-being, and social behavior may result from religion's influences on self-control and self-regulation. The authors conclude with suggestions for future research.

Religion, self-regulation, and self-control: Associations, explanations, and implications.

Consumer religiosity, which includes the religious commitment and religious affiliation of consumers, may be a significant construct in explaining retail store patronage. The present study used several measures of religiosity to investigate the influence of this possible segmentation variable on consumer evaluation of the importance of various retail department store attributes. Support was found for the religious commitment construct but not for religious affiliation. The most consistent relationship found was between religious commitment and the importance placed by the consumer on sales personnel friendliness/assistance. Direction for future research is provided.

In a constantly changing and increasingly globalized world, religion still plays a significant role in influencing social and consumer behavior. This study will analyze what influence religion and intensity of belief has on attitudes towards the advertising of particular controversial products and services. A questionnaire was distributed to 1,393 people across six different countries and resulting in samples of four main religious groups. The results indicated some statistically significant differences between the groups, which can have important implications for global marketers.

The role of religiousness as a variable in models of consumer behavior is not well-established. Research findings in this area tend to be sparse and conflicting, and measurement issues have yet to be addressed. This article reports on an empirical investigation of religiosity in a causal modeling framework. The results suggest that religiosity is a viable consumer behavior construct in that it (1) did correlate with the life-style variables selected; (2) contributed directly to the model along with sex, age, and income; and (3) was successfully operationalized through multiple measures.

The relationship between Islamic religiosity and residents' perceptions of socio-cultural impacts of tourism in Iran: case studies of Sare'in and Masooleh.

Groups of active churchmembers and nonchurchmemhers were examined for personality changes over a 5-year period. Personality assessment was obtained through use of the Sixteen Personality Factor (16PF) questionnaire. Results indicated that at both testing times the active churchmember group was significantly and consistently different on several personality dimensions. Specifically the active churchmembers tended to be more tender-minded, higher in super ego strength, lower in dominance, and more conservative than the nonchurchmember group. Over the 5-year period only the active churchmember group decreased significantly in guilt proneness and anxiety. These results were found to be consistent with other researches in the area and possible implications are suggested.

Church Membership and Personality: A Longitudinal Study.

N = 175 undergraduate students took Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factor questionnaire (16PF) and Thurston’s Primary Mental Abilities test (PMA). Participants were divided into the following 3 groups on the basis of their PMA subtest scores: A “high verbal-low spatial” group (HiV-LoS), an“intermediate” group, and a “high spatial-low verbal” group (HiS-LoV). On the basis of previous work with HiV-LoS and HiS-LoV participants, several personality differences between the two groups were hypothesized. Analyses of variance were conducted with personality factor scores as dependent variables and sex and ability patterns as independent variables. Results indicated that at least for male participants, the HIS-LoV and HiV-LoS groups differed significantly on certain personality variables involving response to social stimuli.
