Multi-Scale modeling of Structural Concrete

This paper presents a multi-scale and multi-chemo–physics platform to evaluate the lifecycle of structural concrete under environmental and mechanical impacts. Following the scheme from nanometer scale of cement hydrated with water molecule to meter scale of reinforced concrete (RC) members, the platform covers characteristic upscaling based on causality and behavioral response toward both environmental and mechanical impacts. During the process, multi-chemo–physics is incorporated to tackle the local equilibrium and global movement, where the associating impact is also considered with mesoscale cracks. With this platform, long-term structural performances are captured while the coupled durability issue is also investigated.

Corrosion of reinforcing bars in structural concrete is a critical deterioration issue. Corrosion could attribute to the electro-chemical reactions which are closely related to the electrical field and chemical substances. Generally, two types of corrosion are classified including the micro-cell and macro-cell corrosion depending on whether the anodic and cathodic polarization take place at the same location or not. This paper presented a numerical evaluation of macro-cell corrosion of structural concrete with integrating the electrical field and multi-ion kinetics in electrolyte. Space-averaged simulation method was adopted which allowed the analytical domain to be structural members, structures or even structure clusters instead of specific concrete-reinforcement interface. Experimental validation was also conducted with pseudo concrete materials to verify the reliability of numerical simulation where satisfied correlation was found.

Numerical simulation and experiment on the coupled effects of macro-cell corrosion and multi-ion equilibrium with pseudo structural concrete

In long-lasting mass concrete structures the desired material properties of the concrete mix to realize a durable concrete and a concrete surface without cracks conflict with each other. The requirement of concrete with high durability leads to high thermal energy release and therefore, as another consequence, to high crack risk. Crack reduction is achieved by use of concrete with low hydration energy, which on the other hand leads to a decrease in concrete durability. Besides from optimized base materials and concrete technology, a gradient material distribution in the cross-section could reduce the problem since durable concrete is needed near the surface and the requirement of low-hydration energy is located in the center of the member. A simplified model is used to investigate the possible effect of a gradient concrete material distribution in mass concrete structures on crack reduction. The results of the analysis show that gradient concrete might contribute to lowering the constraint stresses and therefore the crack risk during concrete hardening.

Modeling and Verification of Early Age Thermal Stress in Second Lining Concrete of NATM Tunnels

To broaden the applications of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete structures under marine environments, it is crucial to gain a fundamental understanding of their short- and long-term performance. In this study, the effectiveness of the proposed multi-scale simulation platform, which incorporates the proposed degradation model of FRP bars, is quantitatively assessed via the comparison between the predicted results and experimental load-displacement curves under different marine conditions (continuous immersion, wet-dry cycling and subtropical marine atmosphere). The spatially physical, chemical and mechanical information, such as pH value, moisture, hydration degree, strength, porosity during the exposure was also revealed. Finally, the long-term structural performance of FRP-reinforced concrete beams exposed to the predefined environmental conditions over durations of 20, 50 and 100 years are assessed using the multi-scale simulation platform. After 50 years of exposure, the load-bearing capacity of GFRP-reinforced concrete beams was found to decrease by 35.8 % in immersion conditions and by 17.9 % in subtropical marine atmosphere. The degradation of the load-bearing capacity in the case of 100 years exposure to subtropical marine atmosphere was found to be less severe than that (23.1 %) in the case of 50-year immersion. These findings not only deepen our understanding of the material and structural properties of FRP-reinforced concrete beams under various environmental conditions, but also validate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-scale platform.
