This invention utilizes geometrically positioned strain gages attached to load cells (pylons) where each cell measures all force and moment components (Fx, Fy, Fz, Mx, My, Mz), thereby measuring all six degrees of freedom. The independent measurements eliminate the need for one cell's dependency on another, therefore reducing assumption, calculation, and cross-sensitivity errors. At least two load cells are attached to a top plate, to which the load is applied, and an optional bottom plate and an optional mounting plate. These force plates can be connected together to form an array of plates to measure multiple instances of load application over a greater area. The signals produced can be transmitted via wiring or wireless means either directly to a data collection device, or to a connector board, then through an optional pre-amplifier and a second stage amplifier for signal amplification and conditioning, then, finally, the data is received by a data collection device for interpretation and reading. The output can be six or more channels, and can be electronically combined to six channels.

An apparatus and method for screening combinatorial libraries of materials by measuring the response of individual library members to mechanical perturbations is described. The apparatus generally includes a sample holder for containing the library members, an array of probes for mechanically perturbing individual library members, and an array of sensors for measuring the response of each of the library members to the mechanical perturbations. Library members undergoing screening make up a sample array, and individual library members constitute elements of the sample array that are confined to specific locations on the sample holder. During screening, the apparatus mechanically perturbs individual library members by displacing the sample array (sample holder) and the array of probes. Typically, all of the elements of the sample array are perturbed simultaneously, but the apparatus also can also perturb individual or groups of sample array elements sequentially. The flexible apparatus and method can screen libraries of materials based on many different bulk physical properties, including Young's modulus (flexure, uniaxial extension, biaxial compression, and shear); hardness (indentation), failure (stress and strain at failure, toughness), adhesion (tack, loop tack), and flow (viscosity, melt flow indexing, and rheology), among others.

An apparatus and method for rapidly and accurately identifying and quantifying analytes in a complex mixture is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an ultra-sensitive cavity-enhanced spectrometer coupled to data-collection and analysis devices. The method comprises the use of a database containing the absorption cross-sections of various analytes to numerically determine the composition of the sample.

Apparatus and method for rapid and accurate quantification of an unknown, complex mixture

An apparatus and method for measuring viscosity or related properties of fluid samples in parallel is disclosed. The apparatus includes a plurality of tubes and reservoirs in fluid communication with the tubes. The tubes provide flow paths for the fluid samples, which are initially contained within the reservoirs. The apparatus also includes a mechanism for filling the reservoirs with the fluid samples, and a device for determining volumetric flow rates of fluid samples flowing from the reservoirs through the plurality of tubes simultaneously. The disclosed apparatus is capable of measuring viscosity or related properties of at least five fluid samples simultaneously. Useful reservoirs and tubes include syringes.

Design Support System for Suspension Development

Dynamic behaviour of a thin-walled beam due to impact are investigated through experiments, and a particular attention is paid to lateral buckling of the beam : T-shaped beam is chosen for tests and impact force is applied by a pendulum-type impact testing machine, of which weight itself is a load-cell and the impact force is measured. Strains of the beam are also measured by strain gages. On the other hand, static tests for lateral buckling of beam are carried out to examine the dynamic effects on the ultimate strength. These experimental results are compared with the calculated ones by the finite element method. The dynamic behaviours of the beam-component of frame structures are clarified through the investigation.

Lateral buckling of a thin-walled beam subjected to impulsive load

CAE technology has been widely applied for the crash safety design of vehicles. Nevertheless, an optimum design approach has not been completed for the crash behavior of the vehicles because of the nonlinearity of the dynamic problem. The authors have proposed a Statistical Design Support System (SDSS), and suggested this is one of the available optimal approaches for nonlinear and dynamic problems such as the vehicles. In this study, the SDSS was applied for the multiobjective optimization design of the main reinforced members of a vehicle. The thicknesses of each member were chosen as the design variables, and the total weight and the deformation of the cabin as the multi-objective functions. It was shown that the SDSS could satisfactorily be used as a practical multi-objective optimization design tool for the crash safety design of vehicles, and the design cycle could be significantly reduced using SDSS.
