This paper reviews recent experimental and theoretical progress concerning many-body phenomena in dilute, ultracold gases. It focuses on effects beyond standard weak-coupling descriptions, such as the Mott-Hubbard transition in optical lattices, strongly interacting gases in one and two dimensions, or lowest-Landau-level physics in quasi-two-dimensional gases in fast rotation. Strong correlations in fermionic gases are discussed in optical lattices or near-Feshbach resonances in the BCS-BEC crossover.

They have found numerous experimental applications, opening up the way to important breakthroughs. This review broadly covers the phenomenon of Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases and their main applications. This includes the theoretical background and models for the description of Feshbach resonances, the experimental methods to find and characterize the resonances, a discussion of the main properties of resonances in various atomic species and mixed atomic species systems, and an overview of key experiments with atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, degenerate Fermi gases, and ultracold molecules.

Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases

Matter waves inside periodic potentials are well known from solid-state physics, where electrons interacting with a crystal lattice are considered. Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates inside light-induced periodic potentials (optical lattices) share many features with electrons in solids, but also with light waves in nonlinear materials and other nonlinear systems. Generally, atom-atom interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates lead to rich and interesting nonlinear effects. Furthermore, the experimental control over the parameters of the periodic potential and the condensate make it possible to enter regimes inaccessible in other systems. In this review, an introduction to the physics of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices is given and an overview of the theoretical and experimental advances to date.

This paper presents a review of the current state of the art in the research field of cold and ultracold molecules. It serves as an introduction to the focus issue of New Journal of Physics on Cold and Ultracold Molecules and describes new prospects for fundamental research and technological development. Cold and ultracold molecules may revolutionize physical chemistry and few-body physics, provide techniques for probing new states of quantum matter, allow for precision measurements of both fundamental and applied interest, and enable quantum simulations of condensed-matter phenomena. Ultracold molecules offer promising applications such as new platforms for quantum computing, precise control of molecular dynamics, nanolithography and Bose-enhanced chemistry. The discussion is based on recent experimental and theoretical work and concludes with a summary of anticipated future directions and open questions in this rapidly expanding research field.

Feshbach Resonances in Ultracold Gases

Bioinspired structural color materials represent a curiosity-led, technology-driven field with multidisciplinary research studies aiming at mimicking and recapitulating natural coloration and functions. Over the past several decades, great achievements have been made, including natural structural coloration mechanisms, fabrication of artificial structural color materials, and their applications in extensive areas. In very recent years, research has been propelled forward towards making structural color materials intelligent by incorporating fascinating functions such as self-healing, autonomous regulation, shape memory, etc. These accomplishments create a great leap for structural color materials being applied in real-life scenarios and devices such as in anti-counterfeiting, displays, sensors, soft robots, wearable electronics, organ-on-a-chip platforms, etc.

Bio-inspired intelligent structural color materials

We developed a novel method for fabrication of glass micromodels with varying depth (2.5-D) with no additional complexity over the 2-D micromodels' fabrication. Compared to a 2-D micromodel, the 2.5-D micromodel can better represent the 3-D features of multi-phase flow in real porous media, as demonstrated in this paper with three different examples. Physically realistic capillary snap-off and the formation of isolated residual oil droplets were realized, which is not possible in 2-D micromodels. Droplet size variation during an emulsion flooding was investigated on the 2.5-D micromodel, showing that the droplet size decreases sharply at the inlet, with little change in size downstream of the micromodel. Displacement of light oil with ultra-low interfacial tension (IFT) surfactant was conducted in the 2.5-D micromodel, where we were able to visualize the generation and flowing of a microemulsion phase, which agrees with, and explains observations in experiments of more complex porous media.
