La quema del tamo de arroz a campo abierto es una de las mayores fuentes de contaminacion agricola, es por esto que el retorno de los residuos vegetales al suelo ha sido propuesto como una alternativa de manejo eficiente de los residuos pos-cosecha. Sin embargo, es poco conocido el impacto que tiene sobre los microorganismos edaficos involucrados en la disponibilidad y ciclaje de nutrientes. Por lo anterior, se planteo un experimento en campo para evaluar los cambios generados sobre la comunidad microbiana vinculada al ciclo del nitrogeno por la aplicacion de 4 tratamientos diferentes de manejo del tamo de arroz: (Cob+mo) cobertura del terreno con tamo de arroz inoculado con un consorcio microbiano de degradacion, (Inc+mo) tamo de arroz inoculado con el consorcio microbiano e incorporado, (Quema) quema del tamo y (Cob) cobertura del terreno con tamo de arroz sin inocular. Se realizaron 4 muestreos de suelo de soporte y suelo rizosferico antes y durante el ciclo de cultivo. Se evaluo la diversidad, estructura y composicion de la comunidad bacteriana a traves del analisis del gen 16S rRNA y se determino la actividad de las enzimas nitrogenasa, proteasa y ureasa vinculadas con el ingreso de nitrogeno al sistema edafico. Al final del ciclo de cultivo, los mapas de calor basados en la composicion y abundancia de especies, mostraron que las comunidades microbianas de los tratamientos alternos a la quema son mas similares entre si, indicando que la adicion de materia organica influencia la comunidad edafica microbiana. La actividad de las enzimas proteasa y ureasa se vio afectada por la aplicacion del consorcio de degradacion y la forma de retorno del tamo de arroz al suelo respectivamente.

Evaluación de la diversidad taxonómica y funcional de la comunidad microbiana relacionada con el ciclo del nitrógeno en suelos de cultivo de arroz con diferentes manejos del tamo

Addition of organic material, such as crop straw mulch in most soils is considered a strategy for sustainable agricultural production. We conducted a two-year experiment in 2015 and 2016 to determine changes in soil biochemical properties and maize yield in response to treatment with wheat-straw mulch. The treatments consisted of the addition of different levels of wheat-straw mulch (S1: 0, S2: 2500, S3: 5000 kg ha−1). Soil samples from four depths (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 m) were collected and analyzed. Soil enzymes, such as invertase, phosphatase, urease, and catalase, were significantly higher in the S3 treatment than in the S1 treatment. Values were greater for the samples collected at 0.1 m soil depth than those collected from deeper soil layers. Regarding soil properties, soil organic carbon (SOC), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and soil water content (SWC) were significantly higher in S3 at 0–0.1 m soil depth than in other treatments. Compared with the (S1), an average increase in SOC, AN, AP, TN, TP, and SWC in 0–0.4 m soil depth with full straw mulch (S3), were 32.4, 31.9, 32.0, 11.8, 16.7, and 18.5%, higher, respectively. On average, urease, phosphatase, invertase, and catalase increased by 15.1, 11.0, 88.4, and 24.0%, respectively in the S3 treatment compared with that in the S1 treatment at 0–0.1 m depth, and decreased with increasing soil depth. The S3 treatment had increased grain yield (7%), biomass yield (28%), and water use efficiency (8%), compared with the S1 treatment. Overall, our results suggested that the S3 straw mulch treatment (5000 kg ha−1) could be used to sustain maize productivity and promote a better relationship between soil enzymes and soil properties in the semi-arid conditions of the Guanzhong area.

Changes in soil enzymes, soil properties, and maize crop productivity under wheat straw mulching in Guanzhong, China

The demand for food is expected to significantly increase with continued population growth over the next 50 years, indicating that agricultural efficiency should be simultaneously stabilized and enhanced. Here, we discuss the effects of mulching and nitrogen (N) fertilizer on the soil environment and crop yield to inform food security. The use of mulch in agriculture provides many benefits to the soil by reducing evaporation, improving temperatures, adjusting the microbial biomass, maintaining the soil organic carbon balance, increasing nutrient cycling, promoting soil enzyme activity, enhancing soil aggregate stability and suppressing weed infestation. Nitrogen fertilization can markedly improve soil fertility and crop yield. However, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and the environment may be negatively affected by the improper application of N fertilizers. The improvement of NUE has been an important focus in field management for the more sustainable use of valuable N fertilizers. A better understanding of the interaction between N and mulch may improve NUE and crop yields. Inorganic mulches more efficiently alter the soil environment to enhance the NUE and crop yield, while organic mulching materials are more environmentally friendly and inexpensive. The selection of appropriate mulching materials should be combined with effective N management strategies, crop species, crop management practices and climatic conditions. In the future, precise nitrogen fertilizer management on farms and the development of relatively high-NUE and high-yielding crops will be highly feasible.

The Effects of Mulch and Nitrogen Fertilizer on the Soil Environment of Crop Plants

In the coming decades there will be increasing pressure on global food systems, and agriculture will have the challenge to provide food security for a growing world population without impacting environmental security. Accordingly, it will be necessary to use modern technologies in agroecosystems in order to supply sufficient food and decrease the negative impacts on the environment induced by chemical fertilization and by inadequate disposal or reuse of agricultural wastes. A combination of biotechnology and nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize agricultural systems and provide solutions for current and future problems. These include the development and use of smart fertilizers with controlled nutrient release, together with bioformulations based on bacteria or enzymes. This study was designed to provide a critical review of information related to current food security issues and the role of smart fertilizer development in future food production. We concentrate on advances in the development of controlled-release biofertilizers and the use of harvesting residues as coating and carrier materials.

Smart Fertilizers as a Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture

Soil infertility is the main barrier to dryland agricultural production in China. To provide a basis for the establishment of a soil amelioration technical system for rainfed fields in the semiarid area of northwest China, we conducted a four—year (2007–2011) field experiment to determine the effects of wheat straw incorporation on the arid soil nutrient levels of cropland cultivated with winter wheat after different straw incorporation levels. Three wheat straw incorporation levels were tested (H: 9000 kg hm-2, M: 6000 kg hm-2, and L: 3000 kg hm-2) and no straw incorporation was used as the control (CK). The levels of soil nutrients, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil labile organic carbon (LOC), and enzyme activities were analyzed each year after the wheat harvest. After straw incorporation for four years, the results showed that variable straw amounts had different effects on the soil fertility indices, where treatment H had the greatest effect. Compared with CK, the average soil available N, available P, available K, SOC, and LOC levels were higher in the 0–40 cm soil layers after straw incorporation treatments, i.e., 9.1–30.5%, 9.8–69.5%, 10.3–27.3%, 0.7–23.4%, and 44.4–49.4% higher, respectively. On average, the urease, phosphatase, and invertase levels in the 0–40 cm soil layers were 24.4–31.3%, 9.9–36.4%, and 42.9–65.3% higher, respectively. Higher yields coupled with higher nutrient contents were achieved with H, M and L compared with CK, where these treatments increased the crop yields by 26.75%, 21.51%, and 7.15%, respectively.

Effects of Wheat Straw Incorporation on the Availability of Soil Nutrients and Enzyme Activities in Semiarid Areas

The soil degradation caused by conventional tillage in rain-fed areas of northwest China is known to reduce crop yields because of major losses of soil organic carbon and nutrients. To evaluate the effects of straw incorporation on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (STN) sequestration capacity in loessial soil, we investigated the effects of straw incorporation on SOC, STN and crop yield in semiarid areas of southern Ningxia for a 4-year period (2007–2010). Four treatments were tested: (i) no straw incorporation (NA); (ii) incorporation of maize straw at a low rate of 4.5 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (LA); (iii) incorporation of maize straw at a medium rate of 9.0 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (MA); and (iv) incorporation of maize straw at a high rate of 13.5 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (HA). In the final year (2010), the results showed that the mean soil bulk density in the 0–60 cm depth had decreased with high, middle, and low straw incorporation rate treatment compared with no straw incorporation treatment (NA) by 3.7% (P   low straw incorporation rate treatment > no straw incorporation treatment.
