Over 17% efficiency all-small-molecule organic solar cells based on an organic molecular donor employing 2D side chain symmetric-breaking strategy

Herein, an emerging acceptor L8-BO as the third component was combined with the B1:BO-4Cl system for constructing efficient ternary all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). Theoretical, morphological, and crystallographic studies reveal that L8-BO and BO-4Cl possess good compatibility, resulting in alloy-like state formation of two acceptors in ternary blends. The synergistic effect of two acceptors is conducive to forming favorable phase separation and molecular stacking for promoting charge splitting and extraction, which contributes to simultaneously boosting short-circuit current density and fill factor. Furthermore, the alloy-like state of two acceptors and the higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level of L8-BO assist ternary ASM-OSCs in achieving lower voltage loss with respect to the binary devices. The optimal ternary ASM-OSCs with 20 wt % L8-BO deliver a top-level efficiency of 17.10%. This work demonstrates that not only the morphology but also the voltage loss of the small molecular matrix can be well-manipulated by employing the ternary strategy.

Although CsPbI3 perovskites have shown tremendous potential in the photovoltaic field owing to their excellent thermal stability, the device performance is seriously restricted by severe photovoltage loss. The buried titanium oxide/perovskite interface plays a critical role in interfacial charge transport and perovskite crystallization, which is closely related to open‐circuit voltage deficit stemming from nonradiative recombination. Herein, target molecules named 3‐sulphonatopropyl acrylate potassium salts are deliberately employed with special functional groups for modifying the buried interface, giving rise to favorable functions in terms of passivating interfacial defects, optimizing energetic alignment, and facilitating perovskite crystallization. Experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the buried interface modification inhibits the electron transfer barrier and simultaneously improves perovskite crystal quality, thereby reducing trap‐assisted charge recombination and interfacial energetic loss. Consequently, the omnibearing modification regarding the buried interface endows the devices with an impressive efficiency of 20.98%, achieving a record‐low VOC deficit of 0.451 V. The as‐proposed buried interface modification strategy renders with a universal prescription to push the limit of VOC deficit, showing a promising future in developing high‐performance all‐inorganic perovskite photovoltaics.

Pushing the Limit of Open‐Circuit Voltage Deficit via Modifying Buried Interface in CsPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Modification of the surfaces of montmorillonite (Mnt) by organic molecules is an effective method for improving their affinity toward non-aqueous substances, and has resulted in extensive industrial applications as rheological control agents, drilling fluids, and other functional materials used in applications ranging from environmental remediation to coatings. The present study reviewed recent progress in organo-modification of Mnt, and provides state-of-the-art insights into proposed modification mechanisms and the peculiar functionalities of the resulting organo-montmorillonite (OMnt). Several routes have been employed to modify Mnt, including ion exchange with organic ions, surface adsorption, and grafting of organics. Commonly used organic modifiers include cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, non-ionic, and polymeric species. Organo-modification is driven by multiple interactions: van der Waals forces, cation exchange, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonds, and ion–dipole interaction. OMnt, in general, exhibits synergistic and/or antagonistic effects when used in oil-based drilling fluids, environmental remediation, or layered silicate/polymer nanocomposites. The detailed mechanisms of non-ionic and zwitterionic modification of Mnt remain unclear. This literature survey suggests that future work should emphasize deeper understanding of interactions between the Mnt and the organic modifiers, and meanwhile expand the applications of OMnt into catalysis, drug carriers, and the biomedical field.
