Narrow-bandgap semiconductor WS2 nanosheets are active photocatalysts, either under visible or under NIR irradiation. The photocatalyst functions are confirmed via photogeneration of an electron-hole pair, with a low rate of recombination.

From UV to Near‐Infrared, WS2 Nanosheet: A Novel Photocatalyst for Full Solar Light Spectrum Photodegradation

In this paper we report the preparation of a series of Bi3+-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with different Bi-concentrations, i.e. 0.25–5% by a facile sol–gel process and their application as an efficient photocatalyst. The detailed characterization revealed that the Bi-doped TiO2 catalysts possess densely grown nanoparticles, a high specific surface area, crystalline anatase TiO2 and good optical properties. The incorporation of Bi3+ into the TiO2 lattice led to the expansion of the TiO2 spectral response into the visible light region and the efficient separation of charge carriers. The prepared samples were employed for the photocatalytic degradation of Alizarin red S dye (ARS) under visible light illumination. It was found that the incorporation of the Bi3+ ions in the TiO2 lattice causes a marked improvement in the photocatalytic degradation of the ARS dye; however, the degradation efficiency depended upon the Bi+3 ion doping concentration and the dose of the prepared catalyst. The detailed photocatalytic experiments confirmed that the 1% Bi+3 ion doping concentration and 0.1 g L−1 dose exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation efficiencies for the model dye. Moreover, more than 80% degradation of ARS was observed by the prepared Bi-doped catalysts within 90 minutes under visible light. The synthesized Bi-doped TiO2 nanoparticles revealed a superior photocatalytic behavior towards the photocatalytic degradation of ARS under similar experimental conditions, as compared to the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles and other commercially available derivatives (TiO2 PC-50 and TiO2 P25).

Visible light responsive iron-doped TiO 2 (Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL) was synthesized by sol–gel method using 1-vinyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (VPIM + I − ) as a reaction medium. VPIM + I − not only made the morphological and structural changes of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL, but also extended its absorption edge to the visible light region. The photocatalytic activity of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL was tested in the degradation of 2-nitrophenol under simulated solar light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL was higher than the samples prepared in the reaction medium without VPIM + I − . Moreover, the effect of pH and H 2 O 2 on the photocatalytic activity of Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL was also investigated. Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL showed high photocatalytic activity in acidic environment, and H 2 O 2 had a dual effect on the photocatalytic activity Fe 3+ /TiO 2 -IL.

The effect of vinyl-containing ionic liquid on the photocatalytic activity of iron-doped TiO2

Nano-engineering is of particular interest in tailoring the hydrogen storage properties of magnesium hydride (MgH2). This work demonstrates in situ formation of nanocrystalline MgH2 by hydrogenation at room temperature. We investigated the effects of hydrogenation variables on the MgH2 nanostructure. The results showed a large amount of MgH2 nanocrystallites with sizes of 4–10 nm in the hydrogenated samples. The sample recharged at 298 K under 0.1 bar hydrogen showed MgH2 nanocrystallites with a mean size of 5.2 nm. The dehydrogenation kinetics of the sample hydrogenated at lower pressure are improved over samples hydrogenated at higher pressures. The in situ formation of nanocrystalline MgH2 can be achieved by deliberately engineering the nucleation and growth rate of MgH2. Hydrogenation pressure, temperature, and the defect density of the material are the critical parameters affecting the nucleation rate of MgH2. In addition to low temperature, hydrogenation under lower pressure can significantly slow the growth rate of MgH2 during hydrogenation. These findings provide a different strategy enabling in-process control over the nanostructure of MgH2.

Facile One-Step Synthesis of Inorganic-Framework Molecularly Imprinted TiO2 and Its Molecular Recognitive Photocatalytic Degradation of Target Pollutant

Controllable optical properties are crucial for the application of light‐emitting materials in optical devices. In this work, controllable photoluminescence in metal halide perovskite crystals is realized via photoactivation of their defects. It is found that under continuous excitation, the photoluminescence intensity of a CH3NH3PbBr3 crystal can be fully controlled by sub‐bandgap energy photon illumination. Such optically controllable emission behavior is rather general as it is observed also in CsPbBr3 and other perovskite materials. The switching mechanism is assigned to reversible light‐induced activation/deactivation of nonradiative recombination centers, the presence of which relates to an excess of Pb during perovskite synthesis. Given the success of perovskites in photovoltaics and optoelectronics, it is believed that the discovery of green luminescence controlled by red illumination will extend the application scope of perovskites toward optical devices and intelligent control.
