BACKGROUND Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted intensive attention because of their ever-increasing power conversion effi­ciency (PCE), low-cost materials constituents, and simple solution fabrication process. Initi­ated in 2009 with an efficiency of 3.8%, PSCs have now achieved a lab-scale power conversion efficiency of 23.3%, rivaling the performance of commercial multicrystalline silicon solar cells, as well as copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cells. Thousands of articles re­lated to PSCs have been published each year since 2015, highlighting PSCs as a topic of in­tense interest in photovoltaics (PV) research. With high efficiencies achieved in lab devices, stability and remaining challenges in upscal­ing the manufacture of PSCs are two critical concerns that must be addressed on the path to PSC commercialization. ADVANCES We review recent progress in PSCs and discuss the remaining challenges along the pathway to their commercialization. Device configurations of PSCs (see the figure) include mesoscopic formal (n-i-p) and inverted (p-i-n) structures, planar formal and inverted struc­tures, and the printable triple mesoscopic structures. PCEs of devices that use these structures have advanced rapidly in the case of small-area devices (~0.1 cm 2 ). PSCs are also attracting attention as top cells for the construction of tandem solar cells with existing mature PV technologies to increase efficiency beyond the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction devices. The stability of PSCs has attracted much well-deserved attention of late, and notable progress has been made in the past few years. PSCs have recently achieved exhibited life­times of 10,000 hours under 1 sun (1 kW/m 2 ) illumina­tion with an ultraviolet filter at a stabilized temperature of 55°C and at short-circuit conditions for a printable triple mesoscopic PSCs. This irradiation is equivalent to the total irradiation of 10 years of outdoor use in most of Europe. However, within the PSC community, standard testing protocols require further development. In addition, transpar­ency in reporting standards on stability tests needs to be improved; this can be achieved by providing both initial photovoltaic performance and normalization parameters. The upscaling of PSCs has also progressed steadily, leading to PSC mini-modules, standard-sized modules, and power systems. PV companies have set out to manufacture large-area PSC modules (see the figure), and a 110-m 2 perovskite PV system with screen-printed triple mesoscopic PSC modules was recently debuted. Studies of these increased-area modules and systems will promote the development of PSCs toward commercializa­tion. PSC research is expanding to cover fundamental topics on materials and lab-sized cells, as well as to address issues of in­dustrial-scale manufacturing and deployment. OUTLOOK The PV market has been continu­ously expanding in recent years, bringing op­portunities for new PV technologies of which PSCs are promising candidates. It is impera­tive to achieve a low cost per watt, which means that both efficiency and lifetime need improve­ment relative to current parameters. The efficiency gap between lab cells and industrial modules has seen impressive reduc­tions in crystalline silicon; PSCs must simi­larly enlarge module areas to the panel level and need to achieve lifetimes comparable to those of legacy PV technologies. Other improvements will need to include industry-scale electronic-grade films, recycling methods to address concerns regarding lead toxicity, and the adoption of standardized testing protocols to predict the operation lifetime of PSCs. Modules will need to endure light-induced degradation, potential-induced degradation, partial-shade stress, and mechanical shock. The field can benefit from lessons learned during the development of mature PV technologies as it strives to de­fine, and overcome, the hurdles to PSC com­mercial impact.

Challenges for commercializing perovskite solar cells.

Efficient lead (Pb)-free inverted planar formamidinium tin triiodide (FASnI3 ) perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) are demonstrated. Our FASnI3 PVSCs achieved average power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 5.41% ± 0.46% and a maximum PCE of 6.22% under forward voltage scan. The PVSCs exhibit small photocurrent-voltage hysteresis and high reproducibility. The champion cell shows a steady-state efficiency of ≈6.00% for over 100 s.

Lead-Free Inverted Planar Formamidinium Tin Triiodide Perovskite Solar Cells Achieving Power Conversion Efficiencies up to 6.22.

Design and modification of interfaces, always a critical issue for semiconductor devices, has become a primary tool to harness the full potential of halide perovskite (HaP)-based optoelectronics, including photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes. In particular, the outstanding improvements in HaP solar cell performance and stability can be primarily ascribed to a careful choice of the interfacial layout in the layer stack. In this review, we describe the unique challenges and opportunities of these approaches (section 1). For this purpose, we first elucidate the basic physical and chemical properties of the exposed HaP thin film and crystal surfaces, including topics such as surface termination, surface reactivity, and electronic structure (section 2). Halide Perovskites: Is It All about the Interfaces?

During the past 6 years, perovskite solar cells have experienced a rapid development and shown great potential as the next-generation photovoltaics. For the perovskite solar cells with regular structure (n-i-p structure), device efficiency has reached over 20% after the intense efforts of researchers from all over the world. Recently, perovskite solar cells with the inverted structure (p-i-n structure) have been becoming more and more attractive, owing to their easy-fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and suppressed hysteresis characteristics. Some recent progress in their device performance and stability has indicated their promising future. Here, recent developments and future perspectives about inverted perovskite solar cells are reviewed. Interface engineering, film morphology control, device stability, hysteresis phenomena and other research hotspots are discussed to present the roadmap for the development of inverted perovskite solar cells.

Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells: Progresses and Perspectives

The tremendous interest focused on organic-inorganic halide perovskites since 2012 derives from their unique optical and electrical properties, which make them excellent photovoltaic materials. Pb-based halide perovskite solar cells, in particular, currently stand at a record efficiency of ≈23%, fulfilling their potential toward commercialization. However, because of the toxicity concerns of Pb-based perovskite solar cells, their market prospects are hindered. In principle, Pb can be replaced with other less-toxic, environmentally benign metals. Sn-based perovskites are thus the far most promising alternative due to their very similar and perhaps even superior semiconductor characteristics. After years of effort invested in Sn-based halide perovskites, sufficient breakthroughs have finally been achieved that make them the next runners up to the Pb halide perovskites. To help the reader better understand the nature of Sn-based halide perovskites, their optical and electrical properties are systematically discussed. Recent progress in Sn-based perovskite solar cells, focusing mainly on film fabrication methods and different device architectures, and highlighting roadblocks to progress and opportunities for future work are reviewed. Finally, a brief overview of mixed Sn/Pb-based systems with their anomalous yet beneficial optical trends are discussed. The current challenges and a future outlook for Sn-based perovskites are discussed.

“Unleaded” Perovskites: Status Quo and Future Prospects of Tin-Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Fast-growing procedure for perovskite films in planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells

Recently, the metasurfaces for independently controlling the wavefront and amplitude of two orthogonal circularly polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves have been demonstrated to open a way toward spin-multiplexing compact metadevices. However, these metasurfaces are mostly restricted to a single operation frequency band. The main challenge to achieving multiple frequency manipulations stems from the complicated and time-consuming design caused by multifrequency cross talk. To solve this problem, we propose a deep-learning-assisted inverse design method for designing a dual-spin/frequency metasurface with flexible multiplexing of off-axis vortices. By analyzing the cross talk between different spin/frequency channels based on the deep-learning method, we established the internal mapping relationship between the physical parameters of a meta-atom and its phase responses in multichannels, realizing the rapid inverse design of the spin/frequency multiplexing EM device. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated in the microwave region a dual-frequency arbitrary spin-to-orbit angular momentum converter, a dual-frequency off-axis vector vortex multiplexer, and a large-capacity (16-channel) vortex beam generator. The proposed method may provide a compact and efficient platform for the multiplexing of vortices, which may further stimulate their applications in wireless communication and quantum information science.
