Dorothy Leonard-Barton warns readers upfront that her new book, "Wellsprings of Knowledge: Building and Sustaining the Sources of Innovation," is not a quick read. Indeed it is not, though the author, a Harvard Business School professor, tries hard to soften a knot of strategy research with true-life examples from several technology companies. Unfortunately, business books tend to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies: the special effects and twists are a lot more important than the basic plot, which doesn't change much.

Competitive advantage is the ‘Holy Grail’ in strategic management theory. What makes a company more successful than its rivals has dominated scholarship in this area for more than 20 years. There have been two main theories proposed to attempt to identify the important resources and capabilities that configure to build competitive advantage; the Resource-based View and Dynamic Capability View. There is a growing literature stream in the area of Business Intelligence (BI) and Big Data Analytics with regard to both the computer technology and business management constructs. However, the literature is silent of the affordances of BI for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and so a significant gap in the literature remains. This discussion aims to signal the need to fill that gap and to build awareness of BI as a potentially significant contributor to sustained competitive advantage in SMEs underpinned by the iniquitousness of cloud applications previously the domain of Multinational Corporations.

Business Intelligence as a Source of Competitive Advantage in SMEs: A Systematic Review

In recent years, the innovation ecosystem concept has received much attention in the strategy and innovation fields to address radical or discontinuous innovation. This study aims to explore the innovation ecosystem construct of incumbents in the face of technological discontinuities, focusing on the ecosystem actors (that is, incumbents, component providers, and complementors) and their activities for sustainable value creation. First, we conducted a literature review of 34 highly cited and relevant research documents discussing the innovation ecosystem concept to extract key phrases for the innovation ecosystem’s research framework. Then, through the lens of dynamic capabilities, the five core capabilities of incumbent focal firms—collaboration and networking, opportunity sensing, entrepreneurial orientation, knowledge management, and strategic flexibility—are derived as key elements of the research framework. In addition, the following case study conducted by the content analysis of two leading automobile incumbents, Volkswagen and Toyota, supports and concretizes the established research framework. We conclude that as the value chain in the industry is open to diverse emerging experts holding critical technologies in the era of discontinuous innovation, the ecosystem actors are extensively linked beyond existing industry boundaries. Next, incumbents’ proposed five core capabilities are essential for their successful navigation of the complex innovation ecosystem. Finally, the case study also indicates that the traditional automobile giants in the existing ecosystem are heading toward sustainable value creation via technology internalization and dominant platform building to transform themselves into leaders of a new innovation ecosystem in the era of Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Services, and Electric (C.A.S.E.) innovation in the automobile industry.

Resource-based view of organisation emphasises that no organisation can be self sufficient and it will always be dependent on the environment for the fulfillment of resource needs. Further, this interaction with the environment can take various forms including manipulation, which is manifested through mergers, acquisitions and other interorganisational relationships. The rational contingency view of organisations emphasises the goals that an organisation has, which are not clearly brought out in the resource dependence view. It is attempted here to integrate perspectives from the resource-based and rational contingency views of organisations to assess how the dominant coalition would view its role in an organisation with respect to building dynamic capabilities after analysing an array of goal-resource linkage possibilities.
