We are on the verge of ubiquitously adopting Augmented Reality (AR) technologies to enhance our percep- tion and help us see, hear, and feel our environments in new and enriched ways. AR will support us in fields such as education, maintenance, design and reconnaissance, to name but a few. This paper describes the field of AR, including a brief definition and development history, the enabling technologies and their characteristics. It surveys the state of the art by reviewing some recent applications of AR technology as well as some known limitations regarding human factors in the use of AR systems that developers will need to overcome.

A Survey of Augmented Reality Technologies, Applications and Limitations

Society is becoming more automated with robots beginning to perform most tasks in factories and starting to help out in home and office environments. One of the most important functions of robots is the ability to manipulate objects in their environment. Because the space of possible robot designs, sensor modalities, and target tasks is huge, researchers end up having to manually create many models, databases, and programs for their specific task, an effort that is repeated whenever the task changes. Given a specification for a robot and a task, the presented framework automatically constructs the necessary databases and programs required for the robot to reliably execute manipulation tasks. It includes contributions in three major components that are critical for manipulation tasks. 
The first is a geometric-based planning system that analyzes all necessary modalities of manipulation planning and offers efficient algorithms to formulate and solve them. This allows identification of the necessary information needed from the task and robot specifications. Using this set of analyses, we build a planning knowledge-base that allows informative geometric reasoning about the structure of the scene and the robot's goals. We show how to efficiently generate and query the information for planners. 
The second is a set of efficient algorithms considering the visibility of objects in cameras when choosing manipulation goals. We show results with several robot platforms using grippers cameras to boost accuracy of the detected objects and to reliably complete the tasks. Furthermore, we use the presented planning and visibility infrastructure to develop a completely automated extrinsic camera calibration method and a method for detecting insufficient calibration data. 
The third is a vision-centric database that can analyze a rigid object's surface for stable and discriminable features to be used in pose extraction programs. Furthermore, we show work towards a new voting-based object pose extraction algorithm that does not rely on 2D/3D feature correspondences and thus reduces the early-commitment problem plaguing the generality of traditional vision-based pose extraction algorithms. 
In order to reinforce our theoric contributions with a solid implementation basis, we discuss the open-source planning environment OpenRAVE, which began and evolved as a result of the work done in this thesis. We present an analysis of its architecture and provide insight for successful robotics software environments.

Automated construction of robotic manipulation programs

Tracking is a very important research subject in a real-time augmented reality context. The main requirements for trackers are high accuracy and little latency at a reasonable cost. In order to address these issues, a real-time, robust, and efficient 3D model-based tracking algorithm is proposed for a "video see through" monocular vision system. The tracking of objects in the scene amounts to calculating the pose between the camera and the objects. Virtual objects can then be projected into the scene using the pose. In this paper, nonlinear pose estimation is formulated by means of a virtual visual servoing approach. In this context, the derivation of point-to-curves interaction matrices are given for different 3D geometrical primitives including straight lines, circles, cylinders, and spheres. A local moving edges tracker is used in order to provide real-time tracking of points normal to the object contours. Robustness is obtained by integrating an M-estimator into the visual control law via an iteratively reweighted least squares implementation. This approach is then extended to address the 3D model-free augmented reality problem. The method presented in this paper has been validated on several complex image sequences including outdoor environments. Results show the method to be robust to occlusion, changes in illumination, and mistracking.

Real-time markerless tracking for augmented reality: the virtual visual servoing framework

We propose an efficient real-time solution for tracking rigid objects in 3D using a single camera that can handle large camera displacements, drastic aspect changes, and partial occlusions. While commercial products are already available for offline camera registration, robust online tracking remains an open issue because many real-time algorithms described in the literature still lack robustness and are prone to drift and jitter. To address these problems, we have formulated the tracking problem in terms of local bundle adjustment and have developed a method for establishing image correspondences that can equally well handle short and wide-baseline matching. We then can merge the information from preceding frames with that provided by a very limited number of keyframes created during a training stage, which results in a real-time tracker that does not jitter or drift and can deal with significant aspect changes.

We present a complete system architecture for fully automated markerless augmented reality (AR). The system constructs a sparse metric model of the real-world environment, provides interactive means for specifying the pose of a virtual object, and performs model-based camera tracking with visually pleasing augmentation results. Our approach does not require camera pre-calibration, prior knowledge of scene geometry, manual initialization of the tracker or placement of special markers. Robust tracking in the presence of occlusions and scene changes is achieved by using highly distinctive natural features to establish image correspondences.

Scene Modelling, Recognition and Tracking with Invariant Image Features

We present a complete scalable system for 6 d.o.f. camera tracking based on natural features. Crucially, the calculation is based only on pre-captured reference images and previous estimates of the camera pose and is hence suitable for online applications. We match natural features in the current frame to two spatially separated reference images. We overcome the wide baseline matching problem by matching to the previous frame and transferring point positions to the reference images. We then minimize deviations from thetwo-view and three-view constraints between the reference images and the current frame as a function of the camera position parameters. We stabilize this calculation using a recursive form of temporal regularization that is similar in spirit to the Kalman filter. We can track camera pose over hundreds of frames and realistically integrate virtual objects with only slight jitter.

Real-time camera tracking for marker-less and unprepared augmented reality environments

Real-time labeling of geographical landmarks is a simple wearable computing application. Most current systems are based on calculation of optical flow between the current and previous frames to adjust the label position. Here we present two alternative algorithms based on geometrical image constraints The first is based on epipolar geometry and provides a general description of the constraints on image flow between two static scenes. The second is based on the calculation of a homography relationship between the current frame and a stored representation of the scene. A homography can exactly describe the image motion when the scene is planar, or when the camera movement is a pure rotation, and provides a good approximation when these conditions are nearly met. We assess all three styles of algorithms across a number of criteria including robustness, speed and accuracy. We also consider issues of representation and storage for geographical labeling applications.
