Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm which aims to inter-connect all smart physical devices, so that the devices together can provide smart services to the users. Some of the IoT applications include smart homes, smart cities, smart grids, smart retail, etc. Since IoT systems are built up with heterogeneous hardware and networking technologies, connecting them to the software/application level to extract information from large amounts of data is a complex task. In this paper, we have surveyed various architecture and protocols used in IoT systems and proposed suitable taxonomies for classifying them. We have also discussed the technical challenges, such as security and privacy, interoperability, scalability, and energy efficiency. We have provided an in-depth coverage of recent research works for every mentioned challenge. The objective of this survey is to help future researchers to identify IoT specific challenges and to adopt appropriate technology depending on the application requirements.

A Survey on Architecture, Protocols and Challenges in IoT

Residential and commercial buildings are undergoing a dramatic change, and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are shaping the future of these buildings. Researchers have recently utilized IoT in a variety of applications and settings to transfer conventional buildings into smart, efficient, and secure buildings. While functional IoT approaches have been developed, there is still a need for improvement in IoT applications and operations to understand the full potential of this technology. This improvement can properly be done by bridging the gaps of the current literature to provide a building block for future studies. The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of research work on the existing technologies and applications of IoT in residential and commercial buildings. For residential buildings, studies are divided to three major categories of home automation, intelligent energy management systems, and healthcare facilities. For commercial buildings, the current literature is divided to four categories of office buildings, healthcare facilities, educational buildings, and restaurants and retail facilities. Based on the review of each category, the trends, current benefits and risks, and future challenges of the IoT implementation in the built environments are identified and discussed. In particular, integration of various IoT technologies with different capabilities, data storage and processing, and privacy and security risks are identified as the main challenges for IoT implementation. In addition, our results show that the commercial building sector has received more attention compared to the residential building sector. By providing the directions for future research opportunities, this paper benefits IoT developers and researchers to properly identify their work boundaries and define their contributions.

Trends, benefits, risks, and challenges of IoT implementation in residential and commercial buildings

The design and development of information dashboards are not trivial. Several factors must be accounted; from the data to be displayed to the audience that will use the dashboard. However, the increase in popularity of these tools has extended their use in several and very different contexts among very different user profiles. This popularization has increased the necessity of building tailored displays focused on specific requirements, goals, user roles, situations, domains, etc. Requirements are more sophisticated and varying; thus, dashboards need to match them to enhance knowledge generation and support more complex decision-making processes. This sophistication has led to the proposal of new approaches to address personal requirements and foster individualization regarding dashboards without involving high quantities of resources and long development processes. The goal of this work is to present a systematic review of the literature to analyze and classify the existing dashboard solutions that support tailoring capabilities and the methodologies used to achieve them. The methodology follows the guidelines proposed by Kitchenham and other authors in the field of software engineering. As results, 23 papers about tailored dashboards were retrieved. Three main approaches were identified regarding tailored solutions: customization, personalization, and adaptation. However, there is a wide variety of employed paradigms and features to develop tailored dashboards. The present systematic literature review analyzes challenges and issues regarding the existing solutions. It also identifies new research paths to enhance tailoring capabilities and thus, to improve user experience and insight delivery when it comes to visual analysis.

Information Dashboards and Tailoring Capabilities - A Systematic Literature Review

Measurements and design equations for a two section impedance transforming hybrid suitable for MMIC applications and a new method of synthesis for multisection branch-line hybrids are reported. The synthesis method allows the response to be specified either of Butterworth or Chebyshev type. Both symmetric (with equal input and output impedances) and non-symmetric (impedance transforming) designs are feasible. Starting from a given number of sections, type of response, and impedance transformation ratio and for a specified midband coupling, power division ratio, isolation or directivity ripple bandwidth, the set of constants needed for the evaluation of the reflection coefficient response is first calculated. The latter is used to define a driving point impedance of the circuit, synthesize it and obtain the branch line immittances with the use of the concept of double length unit elements (DLUE). The experimental results obtained with microstrip hybrids constructed to test the validity of the brute force optimization and the synthesized designs show very close agreement with the computed responses.

A multi‐attack resilient lightweight IoT authentication scheme

The Internet of Things (IoT) includes many applications, frameworks and protocols that are specific to the types or categories of devices that are controlled. The web browser represents a widely used and available interface to access functionality and is present in most mobile devices. In this paper we present an integrated interface to control IoT connected devices through the medium of the web browser. We describe a lightweight method to integrate an IoT interface with a web browser with the help of various REST APIs and wrapper functions. We use features and technologies specific to the browser, such as bookmarks, authentication and offline mode to control devices directly through the browser instead of going through a centralized server. Our solution will enable any user to easily control any connected smart device via a web browser. We also describe the architecture of an EEG controlled IoT interface for the web browser.

A unified web interface for the internet of things

A comparative study was done to determine the most suitable storage conditions. The selected quality and parameters of tomato ketchup were determined, the tomato slices was treated with KMS, sodium benzoate and control and dehydratedin cabinet tray dryer at 65 0 C for preparation of ketchup. The ketchup stored in the refrigerator (5 0 C) samples was found superior as compared to the room temperature storage. Physico-chemical and quality evaluation of tomato ketchup during storage

There are a number of analytics dashboard related solutions available today, but currently there is no open standard available to integrate different dashboards. In this paper, we provide a dashboard framework to combine data from different analytics sources such as Google Analytics, Flurry, JSON and Excel files, to form a customizable user interface. Our framework uses two configuration files, one for generic meta information and the other for individual services, to configure the dashboard. In our interface, it is possible to program basic calculations based on data from different sources. It is also possible to incorporate interfaces like drag and drop to configure options. Our framework is based on the plugin architecture, which allows easy addition of new data sources. The framework and visualization tool are data driven, meaning that if the source data changes in the future, there is no need to amend the dashboard as well. Our solution can work with local data as well as remote data from AWS servers with added authentication. We present the components of our dashboard solution along with implementation details of a prototype dashboard for a web service.

A Generic Visualization Framework based on a Data Driven Approach for the Analytics data

The popularity of multi tabbed browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox or Internet explorer has led to exploration of new ways to organize browser data in the different tabs. In tabbed browsing, different tabs on a web browser are typically used for different contexts. For example, one tab may be used for checking email and another for reading the news. However, the user data, such as bookmarks and history, is only accessible together rather than being segregated by context. In this paper we mention two approaches to organize tab specific browser data in different tabs: firstly by having an additional tab id field to identify the tab in the user data in the browser such as history, cookies and bookmarks; and secondly by clustering and displaying browser data by context. We mention new user interfaces based on clustering of user data and tab based grouping. Finally, we study the effect of these changes on the browser performance.
