TL;DR: The cytokine storm induced by invasive dental treatment under bisphosphonate treatment promotes ONJ development due to elevated levels of inflammatory cytokine-producing cells, and gene-targeting of either TNFα, IL-6 or IL-1 or treatment with etanercept can antagonize OnJ development caused by combined tooth extraction and zoledronate treatment.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that mechanical stress induces ROS accumulation and inflammatory cytokine expression in cultured chondrocytes in vitro and that both are inhibited by treatment with the anti-oxidant N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and suggested that NAC may represent such a reagent and serve as osteoarthritis treatment.
