Polymeric materials are used for personal protective equipment (PPE), which is mandatory for clinicians to use when handling coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. The development of diagnostic tools and vaccines for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is also dependent on polymer technology. This current report aims to provide readers with the trend of polymer research regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, by employing bibliometric analysis. A literature search on the Scopus database (31 January 2022) was carried out using predetermined terms. Using Scopus database features, the publications were filtered based on the year of publication (2020–2022), types of articles (original research and review), and language (English). The metadata were extracted in a CSV (.csv) file, to be later used in VOSviewer software. The data were presented in a table, graph, and network visualization. As many as 512 publications were included, consisting of 66.4% original research articles and 33.6% review articles. Most of the publications were written by authors whose affiliation was in the United States (n = 118, 23%) and covering the Materials Science subject area (n = 142, 27.7%). The Ministry of Education of China was the most productive organization, publishing 11 articles. The National Science Foundation of China was the top funding source, supporting 45 publications. Heinz C. Schröder was the most prolific author, publishing nine articles. Science of the Total Environment was the leading journal publishing the included studies. The trend of polymer technology related to COVID-19 mostly covers PPE and waste-management themes. The use of polymer technology as a delivery system for the anti-SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 vaccine is also among the frequently researched areas. We encourage more research in the field of polymer technology be carried out, to overcome the global pandemic.

Trend of Polymer Research Related to COVID-19 Pandemic: Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract Hybrid nanomaterials have found use in many biomedical applications. This article provides a comprehensive review of the principles, techniques, and recent advancements in the design and fabrication of hybrid nanomaterials for biomedicine. We begin with an introduction to the general concept of material hybridization, followed by a discussion of how this approach leads to materials with additional functionality and enhanced performance. We then highlight hybrid nanomaterials in the forms of nanostructures, nanocomposites, metal–organic frameworks, and biohybrids, including their fabrication methods. We also showcase the use of hybrid nanomaterials to advance biomedical engineering in the context of nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, diagnostics, theranostics, and biomanufacturing. Finally, we offer perspectives on challenges and opportunities. 

Putting Hybrid Nanomaterials to Work for Biomedical Applications.

Photoresponsive liposomes are controlled-release liposomes modified by photoresponsive materials. They use light with high spatial and temporal precision as a means of regulation. After excitation by light at appropriate wavelengths, photoresponsive liposomes can influence the permeability of phospholipid bilayers through the photothermal or photoisomerization effect of photoresponsive materials. The photothermal effect causes the phospholipid layer to become dispersed by local heating, and the photoisomerization effect modulates the release behavior by establishing permeation channels on the phospholipid layer through changes in the dipole moments of azobenzene derivatives. Currently, photoresponsive liposomes are widely used as a cutting-edge strategy for nanomedicine. In this paper, three types of photoresponsive liposomes based on organic photosensitizers, Au nanoparticles, and azobenzene derivatives with abundant research reports were introduced based on the differences in the photoresponse principles and forms of different photoresponsive materials. This review aims to reflect the differences in the structures, properties, photoresponsive materials, and principles of action of different photoresponsive liposomes. Moreover, this work outlines the current status of their application in the field of nanomedicine. 

Recent Development of Photoresponsive Liposomes Based on Organic Photosensitizers, Au Nanoparticles, and Azobenzene Derivatives for Nanomedicine

In recent decades, conducting polymers (CPs) like polyaniline and polypyrrole have attracted the attentions of scientists all over the world due to having important advantages such as simplicity of synthesis, excellent chemical/mechanical stability and good optical properties. Despite the existence of different shortcomings in the pristine form of CPs, hybridization with other substances can be a great solution to decrease these limitations. The synergetic influences of CPs with composites can make them a promising option for industrial-based applications in electronics, medical, biomedical and optoelectronic fields. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review for expert and non-expert readers to be acquainted with the recent advancements in the field of perception, characterization and synthesis of different types of CPs in industries. Additionally, this paper overviews the application of commonly-applied CPs in industrial activities and present the advantages/disadvantages of each of them to provide an opportunity for readers to know the efficiency and feasibility of using each CP based on their conductivity and other related parameters.
