A spectral method based on Bernstein orthonormal basis functions for solving an inverse Roseneau equation

In this paper, we propose a numerical technique based on the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) for solving a classical optimal shape design problem. The problem contains a free boundary condition which should be approximated to find the optimal domain for the solution of Laplace equation. For solving the considered optimization problem, we introduce a meshless regularization technique based on the combination of the MFS and application of the Tikhonov’s regularization method and reduce the problem to solve a system of nonlinear equations. A brief sensitivity analysis on model parameters including the position and the size of the subregion D as well the error with boundary conditions is discussed. Numerical simulations while solving several test examples are presented to show the applicability of the proposed method in obtaining satisfactory results.

Designing the Optimal Shape of a Nozzle by the Method of Fundamental Solutions

In this work, we present a spectral method for recovering an unknown time‐dependent lower‐order coefficient and unknown wave displacement in a nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation with overdetermination at a boundary condition. We apply the initial and boundary conditions to construct the satisfier function and use this function in a transformation to convert the main problem to a nonclassical hyperbolic equation with homogeneous initial and boundary conditions. Then, we utilize the orthonormal Bernstein basis functions to approximate the solution of the reformulated problem and use a direct technique based on the operational matrices of integration and differentiation of these basis functions together with the collocation technique to reduce the problem to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. Regarding the perturbed measurements, the method takes advantage of the mollification method in order to derive stable numerical derivatives. Numerical simulations for solving several test examples are presented to show the applicability of the proposed method for obtaining accurate and stable results.

Reconstruction of a time‐dependent coefficient in nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation using Bernstein spectral method

In this paper, we propose a meshless regularization technique for solving an optimal shape design problem (OSD) which consists of constructing the optimal configuration of a conducting body subject to given boundary conditions to minimize a certain objective function. This problem also can be seen as the problem of building a support for a membrane such that its deflection is as close as possible to 1 in the subset D of the domain. We propose a numerical technique based on the combination of the method of fundamental solutions and application of the Tikhonov’s regularization method to obtain stable solution. Numerical experiments while solving several test examples are included to show the applicability of the proposed method for obtaining the satisfactory results.

Application of the method of fundamental solutions for designing the optimal shape in heat transfer

In this paper, we consider inverse problems of the heat conduction process in one and two-dimensional homogeneous bodies of finite size, subject to the given initial and boundary conditions. The considered inverse problems are severely ill-posed since their solutions; if they exist, they do not depend continuously on the input data. We obtain stable solutions for several inverse problems by proposing a meshless regularization technique based on the combination of the method of fundamental solutions and the Tikhonov’s regularization method. In particular, we use the given information at the terminal state to estimate the space-dependent heat source in the one-dimensional case and the space- and time-dependent heat source in the two-dimensional case. Numerical results demonstrate high accuracy and low computational cost.
