The associations between craniofacial morphology and the posture of the head and the cervical column were examined in a sample of 120 Danish male students aged 22-30 years. Two head positions were recorded on lateral cephalometric radiographs, one determined by the subject's own feeling of a natural head balance (self balance position), and the other by the subject looking straight into a mirror (mirror position). Craniofacial morphology was described by 42 linear and angular variables, and postural relationships by 18 angular variables. A comprehensive set of correlations was found between craniofacial morphology and head posture. The correlations were similar for both head positions investigated. Of the postural variables, the position of the head in relation to the cervical column showed the largest set of correlations with craniofacial morphology. Extension of the head in relation to the cervical column was found in connection with large anterior and small posterior facial heights, small antero-posterior craniofacial dimensions, large inclination of the mandible to the anterior cranial base and to the nasal plane, facial retrognathism, a large cranial base angle, and a small nasopharyngeal space. The possible role of functional factors in mediating the relationship between morphology and posture was discussed.

Head posture and craniofacial morphology

The purpose of this paper is to provide a new perspective on craniosynostosis by correlating what is known about sutural biology with the events of craniosynostosis per se. A number of key points emerge from this analysis: 1) Sutural initiation may take place by overlapping, which results in beveled sutures, or by end-to-end approximation, which produces nonbeveled, end-to-end sutures. All end-to-end sutures occur in the midline (e.g., sagittal and metopic) probably because embryonic biomechanical forces on either side of the initiating suture tend to be equal in magnitude. A correlate appears to be that only synostosed sutures of the midline have pronounced bony ridging. 2) Long-term histologic observations of the sutural life cycle call into question the number of layers within sutures. The structure varies not only in different sutures, but also within the same suture over time. 3) Few, if any, of the many elegant experimental research studies in the field of sutural biology have increased our understanding of craniosynostosis per se. An understanding of the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis requires a genetic animal model with primary craniosynostosis and molecular techniques to understand the gene defect. This may allow insight into pathogenetic mechanisms involved in primary craniosynostosis. It may prove to be quite heterogeneous at the basic level. 4) The relationship between suture closure, cessation of growth, and functional demands across sutures poses questions about various biological relationships. Two conclusions are provocative. First, cessation of growth does not necessarily, or always lead to fusion of sutures. Second, although patent sutures aid in the growth process, some growth can take place after suture closure. 5) In an affected suture, craniosynostosis usually begins at a single point and then spreads along the suture. This has been shown by serial sectioning and calls into question results of studies in which the affected sutures are only histologically sampled. 6) Craniosynostosis is etiologically and pathogenetically heterogeneous. Sutural biology and the correlates of craniosynostosis

The relationship between allometry and sexual dimorphism in the human craniofacial complex was analyzed using geometric morphometric methods. Thin-plate splines (TPS) analysis has been applied to investigate the lateral profile of complete adult skulls of known sex. Twenty-nine three-dimensional (3D) craniofacial and mandibular landmark coordinates were recorded from a sample of 52 adult females and 52 adult males of known age and sex. No difference in the influence of size on shape was detected between sexes. Both size and sex had significant influences on shape. As expected, the influence of centroid size on shape (allometry) revealed a shift in the proportions of the neurocranium and the viscerocranium, with a marked allometric variation of the lower face. Adjusted for centroid size, males presented a relatively larger size of the nasopharyngeal space than females. A mean-male TPS transformation revealed a larger piriform aperture, achieved by an increase of the angulation of the nasal bones and a downward rotation of the anterior nasal floor. Male pharynx expansion was also reflected by larger choanae and a more posteriorly inclined basilar part of the occipital clivus. Male muscle attachment sites appeared more pronounced. In contrast, the mean-female TPS transformation was characterized by a relatively small nasal aperture. The occipital clivus inclined anteriorly, and muscle insertion areas became smoothed. Besides these variations, both maxillary and mandibular alveolar regions became prognathic. The sex-specific TPS deformation patterns are hypothesized to be associated with sexual differences in body composition and energetic requirements.

The four main features of biological identity are sex, age, stature, and ethnic background. The forensic osteologist aims to establish these attributes for an individual from their skeletal remains. Many techniques are available for the osteological determination of sex in the adult but it is one of the most difficult biological factors to ascribe to juvenile remains. Conversely, there are a multitude of markers to estimate age in the young skeleton but ageing becomes less accurate with increasing years. Stature is usually a relatively straightforward parameter to establish in the adult. In the juvenile, it is naturally correlated with age but is complicated by differences in rates of growth both between the sexes and between individuals. Determination of ethnic identity is the least reliable and is hampered by lack of data on many populations. This paper reviews the principal methods used to establish identity and comments on their reliability and accuracy in the forensic context.

The paper presents and discusses some features of sutural structures. Fibre orientation in sutures seems to be quite variable and associated with minute local growth phenomena. Trabecular patterns in bones, reflecting growth, appear to support the idea of the outside determination of growth. The bevelled and interdigitated structures seen in many sutures may be interpreted as an expedient solution to the problem of fast growth.
