As part of their dialogical approach, Li, Conle and Luwisch share their own stories about their individual multicultural journeys and encounters with readers. They elaborate on their experiences of understanding the complex constructions of polarised identities within the cultural contexts in which they grew up, trained and taught. They also present readers with their dialogues with their students in multicultural education courses. These stories, some of which are about the resistance of students to the idea of dialogue with the other, flesh out the process and the role of teachers as facilitators. For listening to the stories of students and guiding them in their narrative journey, in which they learn how to listen to the stories of themselves and others, is a difficult task; it requires close attentiveness to individuals and their stories. Particularly, the sections in which the authors discuss the tensions between their students and themselves and how they make sense of these tensions in a dialogical process, demonstrate the attentiveness of the authors and their engagement with narrative tools as teacher educators. Li, Conle and Luwisch take up political positions in their decision to employ narrative approaches to teacher education. For them, narratives can make multicultural dialogue possible in teaching environments by minimising the danger of homogenising processes. The authors were able to open up a discursive space for their students through narrative tools. This is a space in which student teachers were able to explore the paths that connected their personal life stories to the stories of fellow students, which led to intercultural conversation. A follow-up study about these student teachers’ dialogical relationships with their own students in multicultural classes would shed further light on the sustainability of narrative methods in teacher education.

Complying with colonialism: gender, race and ethnicity in the Nordic Region

Amit, Vered (ed.), Going First Class: New Approaches to Privileged Travel and Movement, Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2011 [2007], 172 pages.The contributors to the volume Going First Class: New Approaches to Privileged Travel and Movement (edited by Vered Amit) offer eight lucidly argued and clearly written chapters that demonstrate the strength of what anthropology brings to a subject area where it ventures all too infrequently: the examination of the lives of those deemed "privileged" in the world, and specifically in this case, the lived experience of those whose lives are shaped by travel and mobility. These essays examine the lives of those who could be seen in a broad manner to be labeled, "first class." Amit's introduction situates the subjects tracked by the authors - diplomats, corporate executives (and their wives and families), international consultants, middle-class retirees, middle-class professionals, those comfortable enough to simply "opt out" of their daily lives and routines to retreat to yoga and spiritual centres, and a group of much-sought-after professional cinematographers - in the binary tension that informs a partiality towards the "local," counterbalanced with ideas that privilege the "global"- the latter presuming that one can belong anywhere and everywhere simultaneously. The fine-grained ethnographic detail of the lives of these mobile "elites" offered by many of these authors affirms that such "global" movement prompts layered strategies to manipulate, and at times endure, the "local" imposed upon such subjects. This volume contributes admirably to Laura Nader's long ago request that anthropologists "study up" highlighting in many of the essays the uves and realities of those who often "are taken along for the ride" on such journeys, willingly or otherwise. As such, several of these essays take the reader into the realms of those so transplanted. These essays specifically highlight the complexities of settlement and integration in the "new" and frequently temporary domestic spaces, continually re-created by such "privileged" movement. And even for those who seemed to have little linkage to these mundane spheres, such as the cinematographers that Greenhalgh tracked down, despite the assumedly glamorous landscape of the professional lives of these "stars" they eventually become dogged by the pull of the domestic realities of their lives. Such tensions eventually forced many to re-examine what it meant to be so tenaciously mobile.Essays by Kurotani, Fletcher and Rodman take readers into the private, if not inner personal spaces of their subjects, finding contrasting realities there. Kurotani argues, ironically, that Japanese corporate executive wives in America relish their domestic space there as more "global," a less constrained domain than they would know in Japan. In contrast, Fletcher found the lives of a parallel cohort of European and North American partners of international corporate executives in Jakarta confined by "boundedness" of the "bubble" they were constrained to live in, resolutely isolated from the "global flows" that their lives might be imagined to inhabit. …

Going First Class: New Approaches to Privileged Travel and Movement

While the criminalization and hyper‐sexualization of Venezuelanmigrants and refugees across South America have received growing scholarly attention, fairly little is known about the coping strategies of migrants in this context. In this article, we build on quantitative and qualitative data from a survey (N = 100), 72 in‐depth interviews, and five focus groups with Venezuelan immigrants in five Peruvian cities, collected between 2018 and 2020, to explore how they make sense of, and react to, negative shifts in public opinion on immigration and the criminalization of Venezuelan nationals. We identify two broad coping mechanisms: (a) opposition to their criminalization, including its satirical ridiculing, and (b) intra‐group boundary‐making and “othering.” Our findings make an important contribution to the literature on migrant responses to criminalization and intra‐group relations in the Global South. 

My Brother the “Other”: Use of Satire and Boundary‐Making by Venezuelan Migrants in Peru

ABSTRACT The study of migrant minorities in Europe has long been characterized by a turn to identity politics. This turn has had two shortcomings: First, it often conflates religion, ethnicity, and nationality, resulting in what I call “categorical astigmatism”. Consequently, migrants find themselves lumped into categories they would not primarily identify with. Second, despite its importance in the lived experiences of migrants, class is treated as a “non-identity” and intra-migrant class differences do not get the attention they deserve. Building on these two criticisms, in this article, I first employ Bourdieu’s theory of “classification struggles” to conceptualize “categorical astigmatism” and make a plea for categorical clarification. I then suggest the theory of intersectionality as a way out, highlighting the importance of class and its intersection with other markers of difference. Empirically, the paper builds on interviews with migrants from Turkey and Syria in Germany.

Categorical astigmatism: on ethnicity, religion, nationality, and class in the study of migrants in Europe

ABSTRACT This is a study of ethnic boundary-making strategies promoted by Swedish migrants in Finland. The results are based on interviews with a sample of migrants in Helsinki without previous personal connection to Finland. The interviewees can be considered privileged migrants, and the study provides new information on the strategies of ethnic boundary making promoted by members of privileged ethnic groups. In Helsinki, the migrants from Sweden navigate a social field with local ethnic boundaries, including an autochthonous Swedish-speaking minority. Despite social integration in Finnish society, the migrants choose the strategy of boundary blurring, whereby the interviewees wished to question the importance of ethnic and national belonging. This choice of strategy can be explained by the ambivalence they experience in navigating the local ethnic categories and language policies. Thus, the results describe how societal structures shape individual strategies of ethnic boundary making.

Claims to a nation, dressing the part and other boundary making strategies by skilled migrants in response to ethnic categorization

The aim of this article is to study the experiences of highly skilled migrants from an intersectional perspective. Based on a case study of a group of skilled migrants in Finland, this article explores the interplay of various social identities and categorizations in their everyday life. I argue that although class markers are an important element in the self-defined group identification for skilled migrants, they are also subjected to intersecting social categorizations, stereotyping and assumptions based on gender, ethnicity, race and nationality, creating different experiences and belongings for different skilled migrants. Anthias’ concept of ‘translocational positionality’ is used to highlight how these intersections are highly situational, context specific and relative to other actors in the Finnish context.
