
Purpose
The current digital work environment promoting a “constant-on” culture is a hotbed for cyber incivility. Thus, there is a pressing need to understand its mechanisms. This study aims to shed light on the triggers, sources and impact of rude behaviours in cyberspace. The authors also present the boundary conditions that exacerbate or alleviate the effects of such negative experiences.


Design/methodology/approach
Through a systematic literature review based on predefined search protocols, the authors synthesised the current knowledge on cyber incivility and identified 21 peer-reviewed research articles.


Findings
The findings reveal the different sources of cyber incivility, its personal, relational and organisational antecedents and consequences, and its personal and situational boundary conditions that curb or enhance the negative impact.


Research limitations/implications
The authors unravel the main future research avenues based on the review findings by systemising knowledge on cyber incivility. Managerial efforts in the form of interventions and mitigation are also discussed to help combat this grieving issue in the workplace.


Originality/value
This paper presents the first systematic review of the cyber incivility literature and identifies new avenues for future research. Scholars can expand upon the findings of this study to fill gaps and move the incivility in cyberspace forward. It also offers practical insights on mitigating the advancement of such behaviours in organisations.


Unravelling the mysteries of cyber incivility: a systematic review and research agenda

Bu çalışmanın amacı Lim ve Teo (2009) tarafından geliştirilmiş 14 ifade ve 2 boyuttan oluşan iş yerinde dijital nezaketsizlik (İDN) ölçeğini hem günümüze hem de Türkçeye uyarlamak, geçerlilik ve güvenirlik çalışmasını yapmaktır. Ölçek uyarlama çalışmasında veriler 2 ayrı gruptan elde edilmiştir. Bu gruplardan ilki akademisyenlerden (n=183), ikincisi ise farklı üç sektörde çalışan (n=202) kişilerden oluşmaktadır. Ölçeğin geçerliliği için, yapı, yakınsak, ıraksak ve ölçüt geçerlilik analizleri yapılmıştır. Geçerlilik analizleri sonucunda 14 ifadeli ölçekten 1 ifade çıkarılmıştır. Ölçüt geçerliliği için ölçeğin toplamı ve boyutları ile yaşam tatmini arasındaki ilişkiye bakılmıştır. Ölçeğin toplamı ve boyutlarının yaşam tatmini ile negatif ve anlamlı ilişkisi olduğu bulgulanmıştır. Güvenirlik analizi için ise birinci grubun Cronbach Alfa katsayısına, ikinci grubun Cronbach Alfa (CA) ve birleşik güvenirlik (CR) katsayılarına bakılmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenirlik analizi sonucunda her iki grupta da güvenilir bir ölçek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan geçerlilik ve güvenirlik analizleri sonucunda iş yerinde dijital nezaketsizlik ölçeğinin 13 ifade 2 boyut olarak Türk iş dünyasına ve günümüze uyumlu bir ölçek olduğu belirlenmiştir.

Abstract Recent years have seen an increase in the use of email for work-related matters. Although it represents a convenient way to communicate, it can expose workers to the risk of being victims of rude email communications. This two-sample study investigates whether email incivility is related to work-life conflict and emotional exhaustion, directly and indirectly through techno-invasion. In the second study, we replicate the findings in a different country and extend our findings by additionally examining the moderating role of resilience. A total of 199 Italian (Study 1) and 330 British (Study 2) workers completed online questionnaires. In both countries, employees who reported email incivility from colleagues were more likely to experience work-life conflict and emotional exhaustion both directly and indirectly through techno-invasion. In Study 2, resilience moderated the association between email incivility and techno-invasion. When confronted with email incivility, workers who scored low and moderate on resilience were more likely to experience techno-invasion and then work-life conflict and emotional exhaustion, unlike workers high in resilience, for whom the indirect effect was nonsignificant. Our findings suggest that organizations should put in place ‘‘netiquette’’ codes to provide their employees with rules about writing emails in a civil tone. Moreover, workers could benefit from psychological resilience training in addition to training on email management. 

Mind your language! how and when victims of email incivility from colleagues experience work-life conflict and emotional exhaustion

Aim: Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into workplace functioning is revolutionizing the way organizations enable employee wellness, work–life balance, and mental health. Predictive models and health-monitoring systems create opportunities for proactive interventions designed to result in healthier, more sustainable workplaces. Need for the study: This chapter highlights AI’s growing role in promoting employee wellness through work–life balance, stress management, and mental health – and forms the basis of the study at hand. It looks at predictive AI models and health-monitoring systems that use biometric and wearable data to facilitate real-time insights, averting issues such as burnout. Method: This conceptual paper synthesizes literature and theory to illustrate the role of AI tools such as predictive algorithms and health-monitoring systems in employee wellness, work–life balance, and mental health support. Findings: There are both apps and devices that have advantages (such as virtual reality to Repose) and AI-generated health-monitoring tools. It emphasizes ethical issues surrounding AI deployment, such as the need for transparency via explainable AI (XAI). These innovations are changing the workplace landscape to nurture employee wellness and mental health, thus enabling a good future of work that is balanced and sustainable. Causes and practical implications: AI tools improve work–life balance, reduce burnout, and promote engagement increase wellness. Wearables and predictive analytics now provide real-time health insights while customized wellness initiatives become tailored to consumers. AI chatbots facilitate wellness resource access. Ethical considerations such as data privacy and transparency are essential for building trust and achieving long-term success. 

Smart Workplaces: Enhancing Employee Well-being and Work–Life Integration Through AI

There are few empirical studies that have examined whether workplace incivility affects employees' satisfaction of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) in Nigeria, despite the fact that we acknowledged the strong extant literature on the relationship between workplace incivility and employees' contentment. Consequently, this study investigated whether workplace incivility affects the satisfaction of employees among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The study employed a survey design, utilising a questionnaire as the primary tool for data collection. The questionnaire was circulated among six hundred (600) respondents. Out of the six hundred questionnaires distributed, five hundred and eighty (580) were successfully completed and returned. Data obtained in the survey was analyzed using descriptive statistics (simple percentages, frequency counts, mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, and Pearson correlation), post-estimation statistics (variance inflation factor), and inferential statistics (multiple regression). Findings revealed that supervisors’ incivility (t= -9.17; Prob.= 0.000) and co-workers’ incivility (t = -7.44; Prob.=0.000) negatively and significantly affect employees’ satisfaction. The study concludes that workplace incivility affects employees’ satisfaction of small and medium scale enterprises. The suggestion posits that individuals who own small and medium enterprises, as well as human resource professionals, have the potential to mitigate instances of uncivil conduct and practices, thereby fostering a culture of civility within the workplace.

Internet altruistic behavior among Chinese early adolescents: Exploring differences in gender and collective efficacy using a latent growth modeling

The research attempts to explore the effects of two-dimensional cyber incivility on employee well-being. Based on self-determination theory and regulatory focus theory, we conducted two studies to examine the mediating role of intrinsic motivation and the moderating role of promotion focus between cyber incivility and emotional exhaustion. The results demonstrated that both active and passive cyber incivility predicted increased emotional exhaustion, with intrinsic motivation serving as a key mediator. There was no consistent conclusion of promotion focus’s moderating role. High promotion focus might aggravate the negative effect of passive cyber incivility on intrinsic motivation. The present article provides deeper step towards understanding of cyber incivility, which also helps in the development of intervention strategies to lessen or avoid the negative impact of work-related stressful events on employee well-being.
