Optical fiber sensors offer unprecedented features, the most unique of which is the ability of monitoring varia- tions of the observed physical field with spatial continuity along the fiber. These distributed optical fiber sensors are based on the scattering processes that originate from the interaction between light and matter. Among the three different scatter- ing processes that may take place in a fiber—namely Rayleigh, Raman and Brillouin scattering, this paper focuses on Rayleigh-based distributed optical fiber sensors. For a given optical frequency, Rayleigh-based sensors exploit the three main properties of light: intensity, phase and polarization. All these sensing mechanisms are reviewed, along with basic principles, main acquisition techniques and fields of application. Emphasis, however, will be put on polarization-based distributed optical fiber sensors. While they currently represent a niche, they offer promising unique features worth being considered in greater detail.

Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Based on Rayleigh Scattering

We describe the fabrication and distributed sensing capabilities of very long continuous fiber grating sensor arrays in a twisted multicore fiber. The continuous gratings are fabricated in fibers with UV transparent coating using a flexible and scalable reel-to-reel processing system. Single-frequency continuous gratings are characterized using optical frequency-domain reflectometry and a shape reconstruction algorithm to measure fiber bend radius. Broadband reflection gratings are shown to act as enhanced quasi-Rayleigh scattering elements allowing for distributed temperature measurements in the presence of 10-dB transmission loss.

Continuous Multicore Optical Fiber Grating Arrays for Distributed Sensing Applications

In recent years, with the development of materials science and architectural art, ensuring the safety of modern buildings is the top priority while they are developing toward higher, lighter, and more unique trends. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is currently an extremely effective and vital safeguard measure. Because of the fiber-optic sensor's (FOS) inherent distinctive advantages (such as small size, lightweight, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and corrosion, and embedding capability), a significant number of innovative sensing systems have been exploited in the civil engineering for SHM used in projects (including buildings, bridges, tunnels, etc.). The purpose of this review article is devoted to presenting a summary of the basic principles of various fiber-optic sensors, classification and principles of FOS, typical and functional fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), and the practical application status of the FOS technology in SHM of civil infrastructure.

Recent Progress of Fiber-Optic Sensors for the Structural Health Monitoring of Civil Infrastructure.

In this article, approaches reported in the literature for multi-parameter measurement relying on fiber grating technology are reviewed. Due to its importance, the particular case of temperature/strain simultaneous measurement is addressed in further detail, as well as the techniques and sensing heads for temperature-independent strain measurement. Specific criteria are also proposed for sensing head classification in the context of multi-parameter measurement.

Applications of Fiber Optic Grating Technology to Multi-Parameter Measurement

Distributed sensing systems can transform an optical fiber cable into an array of sensors, allowing users to detect and monitor multiple physical parameters such as temperature, vibration and strain with fine spatial and temporal resolution over a long distance. Fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) systems have been developed for various applications with varied spatial resolution, and spectral and sensing range. Rayleigh scattering-based phase optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) for vibration and Raman/Brillouin scattering-based OTDR for temperature and strain measurements have been developed over the past two decades. The key challenge has been to find a methodology that would enable the physical parameters to be determined at any point along the sensing fiber with high sensitivity and spatial resolution, yet within acceptable frequency range for dynamic vibration, and temperature detection. There are many applications, especially in geophysical and mining engineering where simultaneous measurements of vibration and temperature are essential. In this article, recent developments of different hybrid systems for simultaneous vibration, temperature and strain measurements are analyzed based on their operation principles and performance. Then, challenges and limitations of the systems are highlighted for geophysical applications.
