The BELLE detector for experiments at KEKB, a high luminosity, energy asymmetric B-factory, is now being constructed at KEK. An overview of the detector systems and their status is presented.

The Belle detector

The Belle II experiment, a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK aiming to search for new physics beyond the standard model, is scheduled to start in 2016. The maximum trigger rate is expected to reach as high as 30 kHz with the raw event size of more than 1MB, and the data acquisition is a big challenge. The Belle II DAQ system is a synchronous system based on a pipelined trigger flow control. Data from all sub detectors except for the Pixel Detector (PXD) digitized by the front-end are transferred to unified readout modules (COPPER) via a high speed optical link (Belle2link). The data are then collected by the readout PCs via Ethernet and the event building is performed in multiple steps. The built events are fed into High Level Trigger (HLT) to perform a software trigger. For processing data of PXD, an FPGA-based readout system (ONSEN) is used. ONSEN performs a data reduction by exploiting the feed-back of track information obtained by HLT. In order to test the full functionality of our DAQ design, we developed a down-scaled version of the Belle II DAQ system. The system was first tested with dummy data to check its basic performance and then used in the combined beam test of Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) and PXD in the DESY test beam performed in January 2014. A slow control and real time data monitoring are also implemented in this test. All components of this complex readout chain successfully cooperated to collect the beam data. We present the BelleII DAQ system and the current status of the development.

Data acquisition system for the Belle II experiment

We renewed the data acquisition system for the Belle experiment. Previous data acquisition system, which has been used since December 1998, did not have level 2 trigger facility. To improve the data reduction factor and total throughput, we replaced event builder, online computer farm and the storage system. The event builder and online computer farm are unified into one system. This event building farm uses commodity hardware and newly appended level 2 trigger functionality. This data acquisition system started its operation since last autumn and is very stable. We took 36 fb −1 with new DAQ system, it had already overtaken 30 fb −1 that is total amount of previous DAQ system.

Performance of the Belle silicon vertex detector

We built a data acquisition system for the BELLE experiment. The system was designed to cope with the average trigger rate up to 500 Hz at the typical event size of 30 kB. This system has five components: (1) the readout sequence controller, (2) the FASTBUS-TDC readout systems using charge-to-time conversion, (3) the barrel shifter event builder, (4) the parallel online computing farm, and (5) the data transfer system to the mass storage. This system has been in operation for physics data taking since June 1999 without serious problems.

The BELLE DAQ system

A newly developed system for the control and readout of the BELLE silicon vertex detector (SVD) is described. The system is designed to meet the mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements imposed by the BELLE detector. Its primary purpose is the amplification of analog signals from the VA1 front-end integrated circuits, which are used to read the silicon-strip detectors. It also provides a number of analog and digital functions related to the control and monitoring of the SVD. Much of the circuitry is implemented using programmable logic and analog devices, which allow a degree a flexibility in the design. In total, eight crates will be installed to read out the 81 920 strips from the three-layer double-sided silicon-strip detector array.
